Children will reflect on the everyday items they use that are made from plastic. They will understand the term ‘biodegradable’ and the effect the use of plastic has on the global environment – impact on ecosystems/animal species etc. They will research alternative materials and reflect on how they can make a difference personally to Earth’s plastic problem. The knowledge gained from the key texts and topic work lead to them writing a persuasive letter to the UK’s largest supermarket chains, drawing their attention to the crisis and asking that they evaluate their relationship with suppliers that have not considered plastic alternatives. Our topic this term is ‘The Problem with Plastic’. All work is related to this topic. Children will reflect on the everyday items they use that are made from plastic. They will understand the term

‘biodegradable’ and the effect the use of plastic has on the global environment – impact on ecosystems/animal species etc. They will research alternative materials and reflect on how they can make a

difference personally to Earth’s plastic problem. The knowledge gained from the key texts and topic work lead to them writing a persuasive letter to the UK’s largest supermarket chains, drawing their

attention to the crisis and asking that they evaluate their relationship with suppliers that have not considered plastic alternatives.

Recap the learning from last week and have another quick practise at giving your child instructions to turn in different ways. Use the language of compass points and also degrees and fractions, e.g. “¾ turn anti-clockwise”, “90degrees clockwise”, “Face north and turn to face East. How many degrees have you turned?” etc. Your child should have a 180dgree protractor. Start by having a discussion about WHY we might need to measure angles.

(They help us build better streets and cities. They help us design, engineer and build pretty much everything! Angles help us

tell time, using the sun and shadows, and they make it possible to measure how far away the planets and stars are. We can

play many games better when we understand how angles help us score points and get from one spot to another in the

shortest distance.)

Watch YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RTM418qfdI Examine the protractor with your child and discuss the difference between the outer and inner row of numbers. Also

demonstrate holding the straight line on the protractor against the straight line of the angle so the vertex and corner of the

angle meet.

RUN THROUGH LESSONS SLIDES WITH PRACTISE QUESTIONS. AGAIN, EVERY OTHER SLIDE HAS THE

ANSWERS SO YOU’LL WANT TO SEPARATE THESE!

Your child should now complete the independent task. Support them with this. The answers can be written on the

sheet or separately in a notebook or paper etc.

Topic

I understand

the length of

time it can take

different

materials to

biodegrade

Subject knowledge for our topic is all in the ‘knowledge organiser’ that we have uploaded for you. This includes the key vocabulary the children will need to understand to access the topic. Get your child to read you the PDF document entitled ‘Single Use Plastic’ taken from our key text ‘What a Waste’ Discuss and

think about the audit they completed in the house last week. Which items did they find which are used once then thrown

away?

Watch the video on BBC Bitesize entitled ‘Sustainability and Plastic’:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zshp34j/articles/z6m7vk7 Also, read through the information and discuss.

Re-watch or just read through the section entitled ‘Biodegrade’ from ‘A Planet Full of Plastic’. Focus on the flow diagram that

shows how long it takes a leaf to biodegrade compared with a plastic bottle. Have a discussion about what this means.

Task 1 – Photograph a selection of items in your house that biodegrade quickly and those that don’t. You can print,

stick and label these on a sheet if you wish.

Task 2 – Use the internet to research how long it would take one of each item to biodegrade, e.g. a stick and a tooth

brush. Draw a flow diagram for each item like those in the book. How might the items change in appearance over

different lengths of time? (there is an optional template for this should you wish to use it.)

Plastic Bottle Bird Feeders

Single use plastic is one of the greatest threats to our oceanic environment. By using a plastic bottle to create

a bird feeder for your garden, you are taking a small step towards recycling single use plastic.

Talking Point: Can you think of any other ways you could recycle single-use plastic? OPTIONAL- Make a

list and send your thoughts to your teacher via Class Dojo.

Use the PowerPoint and use the YouTube link and simply follow the instructions.

Wellbeing

I can use my

senses fully.

Mindfulness Walk

Take a short walk together with your child or simply go and have a wander round your garden. Emphasise that

the activity is going to be done in silence apart from when you ask them questions for a special reason- to allow

them to focus on only what is happening/what they are being asked to do.

- After a few minutes, stop and ask your child to close their eyes and think of five things they can

hear.

- Then, start walking again and when you feel it is a good time, stop and ask your child to think of four

things they can see.

- Repeat, when stopped three things they can smell.

- Repeat. Two things they can feel.

- Repeat. One thing they can taste.

The idea of this activity is to take time to appreciate the beauty that is all around us and to discuss the idea that sometimes we need to be silent to use our senses fully.

Writing

I can identify

features of a

persuasive text

USE THE ‘WRITING TO PERSUADE’ PDF DOCUMENT TO SUPPORT WITH THIS TASK

Read through the persuasive letter to Mrs Hallam together and talk through the following questions:

What is the purpose of the letter?

What is it trying to do?

How does the writer try and persuade Mrs.Hallam not to build the theme park?

What kind of language is used (formal).

Task One: Highlight the following persuasive features in the text (use the Writing to Persuade PDF for support) using

a different colour pencil for each feature:

- Conjunctions (Used to join two sentences together)

- Fronted adverbials (Linking words at the start of a sentence to add more information to the verb)

- Modal verbs (Used to indicate the degree of possibility or chance of something happening – could, would etc…)

- Brackets for parenthesis (Extra information)

Eg. Modal verbs in yellow- will, could, would

Task Two: Complete the Cloze Procedure by filling in the gaps using words from the work bank.

Once completed, use answer sheet to mark answers.

42 Allestree Road

Allestree

Derby

DE22 3RV

Dear Mrs Hallam,

I am writing to inform you that, as residents of Allestree (Balmoral Close), we

are extremely concerned about your plans to build a theme park on the school

field at Lawn. We absolutely love theme park rides, ice creams, wild animals and

arcades. However, the noise, smell and destruction to wildlife habitats in the

area would make this a really bad idea in our opinion.

Firstly, the local people will have to tolerate a lot of noise. In particular, the

elderly neighbours, who are trying to enjoy the peace and quiet of retirement,

will be forced to endure the constant roar of the rollercoasters and screams

from excited children. Should they have to endure this disruption in their lives?

Moreover, the smells created by the excessive waste as well as fumes from the

rides will undoubtedly pollute the air, causing additional misery to local people.

Likewise, you must also consider the damage the building of the park will cause

to wildlife habitats on the school grounds. Surely you must realise the damage

that laying concrete, chopping down trees and digging out the land will do.

For these reasons, we trust you will reconsider these plans. Furthermore, we

would like to invite you to attend a meeting with ourselves and other local

people to discuss this matter in person. To conclude, we greatly appreciate you

taking the time to read this letter and look forward to a swift response.

Yours Sincerely,

The Residents of Balmoral Close, Allestree.
