"Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing." – (1 Peter 3:8-9, NIV)

Over the years I’ve often thought of this verse and thought of how people focus on the differences we have and then attack.

Different personality – attack. Different football club supporter– attack. Different race – attack. Different clothing or appearance - attack Different religion – attack. Different family – attack. Different … anything – attack.

Perhaps we need to focus on the things that we have in common. In 2Corinthians 6:18 Paul writes that God calls each of us his sons and daughters and promises to be a father to us all. When we recognise that each one of us is a child of God – then perhaps we can see things differently.

There was a time when the English and French were at war in colonial Canada. The bloke in charge of the British Fleet was Admiral Phipps, and he was ordered to anchor outside Quebec, a city on the St. Lawrence River. He was to wait for the coming of the British infantry and then they would join with the land forces in a combined attack. Because he arrived early, Admiral Phipps, had time on his hands, and he was annoyed by the statues of the saints that adorned the roof and towers of the cathedral. So he spent his time shooting at them with the ships' guns. How many he hit we don't know, but history recorded that when the infantry arrived and the signal was given for attack, the admiral found himself out of ammunition. He had used it for shooting out the saints.

I often wonder how much of our efforts are poured into fighting among ourselves over the minor issues, instead of uniting our efforts to attack the real enemy.

Jesus said that if we love him we would keep his commandments (John 14;15) and secondly that all men would know that we are his disciples if we have love to one another (John 13:35)

It's worth a thought.

PRIMARY FUN DAY 2020Our annual Primary Fun

Day is fast approaching. This year we are trialling something different. Rather than spending thousands of dollars on Carnival Rides, we are having a Tabloid sports morning. After our games, we would love all parents to come and join us for a picnic lunch at 12:00pm. Remember to BYO food.

YEAR 5A COOKING MASTER CLASS

There’s a saying that the recipe for success in life begins with choosing the right ingredients first. Last week, Lily McGann, a well-loved and renowned chef, led a merry band of Year 5 students on a cooking adventure using

Page 6: Year 5 Cooking Master Class · Remember to BYO food. YEAR 5A COOKING MASTER CLASS There’s a saying that the recipe for success in life begins with choosing the right ingredients

Page 6

love and passion as her secret ingredients. There were five sumptuous recipes for students to work on-oreo slices, Nasi Goreng, scones, cannelloni and pin wheels. The finely chopped onions made more than a few cry whilst others showed they were truly the boss of the dough with the scones turning out perfectly mixed and baked. Some turned their stresses into desserts while others were cheered on by the fire alarms brought to life by the slightly ‘overcooked’ Nasi Goreng. Overall, it was a fabulous time with many lessons learned and memories made. Thank you Lily for being so generous of your time and teaching us an important life lesson that if you indeed follow the recipe, you know exactly what you’ll get for dinner….or in this case, lunch.

The VALUE for Week 6 of Term 4 will be:

Cooperation is the action or process of working together to the same end. “Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation

which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off.” Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:12

Operation Swiss Watch

We are expecting all students to be on time, every time

for their Gilson College appointments, period! No excuses! Our goal is to achieve 100% on, but preferably

well before, Monday 18 November, 2019!

Primary = 8.45 am for 8.50 am start. Secondary = 8.40 am for 8.45 am start.

Each college day, well over 1,000 of our Gilson College students begin their day on time, every time. We are so proud of their organisational efforts as such habits point

to future life success. Our aim next week is to achieve 100% success with on time attendance ie. all

students begin their college day on time. We would strongly encourage the small number of habitually late students, to

move into permanent habit change around punctuality.

A taste of falafel and independence

by Lenore Skenazy

School is in full swing in the United States, which means that some lucky students are about to undergo an enormous, transformative experience. It does not involve a test. At least not on paper.

It involves doing a Let Grow project – a radical new homework assignment where the kids’ task

is to go home and do one thing on their own that they haven’t done yet. These activities that might sound simple or scary, depending on how much local news you watch: Walk the dog. Make dinner. Run an errand.

Here’s what some 6th graders in my city – New York — discovered:

“Going home by myself gave me many different feelings. I found it fun, because I was finally able to take the bus all by myself! Also, when I got off, I walked to my building — 8 blocks in total. My fear of going home alone disappeared. I am so happy I forced myself (and I also forced my parents) to go home alone. Now I am allowed to do it every day!”

See? That was a transformative afternoon for that girl. Here’s a boy whose mother allowed him to get a snack on his own:

“After the eternity of waiting, the school day is over. I think to myself: ‘Where to start? So many things to see!’ I figure that if I was going to be a new and independent me, I should try new things. So, I go to the falafel place and order falafel with sour cream and salad. I have never eaten sour cream before. I feel nervous and I hate that. It is all because my parents always keep a really close eye on me. I’m so accustomed to them watching me that not being watched is abnormal. The pita sandwich finally comes. I have one bite of the sloppy mess and think, ‘OH. MY. GOD. FANTAAAAABULOUS!!’ It was one of the best meals I ever had. I eat until I notice my plate is empty.”

And now from a boy who’s exaggerating his fears…I hope:

“Being 11, I feel more independent than ever. I have decided to risk my life and make an egg sandwich, all by myself, and eat it too. This task is harder than it may seem. I am going to use a flame to cook eggs, all independently…. I transfer the eggs to the pan. I am a little nervous now, since I can easily touch the flame right then and there.” He manages to make the eggs, as well as the toast, even though, he writes, “in the process I could easily burn myself.” He survives and eats the sandwich: “Yum.”

Last story, this one from a girl:

“Everyone says that when you’re on an adventure, you’ll travel far. I don’t believe this to be true. In fact, today my adventure led me to a neighbourhood cafe, Cosi. I have been begging my parents to let me go somewhere on my own. Today, they finally caved. They sent me off, cell phone in hand, and told me to have fun. I felt as if I was a bird who had broken free of her cage.”

Naturally, she has to call her parents the second she arrives safely. But, it’s a start.

All these adventures are. Maybe they seem small, even silly, but in a culture that has created mountains of fear around every childhood experience, these kids have started their climb. Pretty soon, they’ll be ready to fly.

You can view videos and info on the Let Grow Project. There’s a letter to send to parents, an instruction sheet for teachers, a list of activity ideas for the kids, and an optional worksheet. All Let Grow’s materials are downloadable and free of charge.
