Companies of all sizes are witnessing a transformation in the types of devices entering the workplace, fueled by their employees, not IT. Generation Virtual (Gen-V) employees expect to be able to use the device of their choice—an Apple® iPad™, netbook or smartphone—to access corporate e-mail, applications and data.1 Why? Because having separate personal and business computing devices creates complexities, reduces efficiency and productivity. Switching back and forth between a personal computer, corporate computer and maybe multiple smartphones is counterproductive and inconvenient. Employees want the power to choose one device for both work and personal use to simplify their work-life technology balance.

This consumerization trend—consumers influencing technology trends that drive change in business and IT—is expected to force more change over the next ten years than any other trend.2 To be successful, IT must respond by finding a way to manage the ever changing landscape of consumer devices. However, there are fundamental differences between what IT and employees want that make it difficult to do: people want freedom, IT wants control. Employees want fast, simple, self service access to their desktop and Windows® applications from any device they choose. IT wants complete control over security, performance and user experience.

Bring your own – A new model Bring Your Own (BYO) is the new business model that empowers employees to bring the device that best suits their virtual workstyle into the workplace. BYO works for all types of devices—laptops, smartphones or tablets—and it can be offered as a company sponsored stipend program—Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC)—or simply a bring your existing device program—Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Either way, BYO brings value to employees, IT and the organization.

Employees—the ultimate consumers of BYO—get what they want: device freedom and easy access to information. Life is simplified because they can use one device to access both personal and corporate information. The result is that employees gain increased mobility, satisfaction, productivity and the ability to work from any location.

BYO enables IT to save time and cost by simplifying IT infrastructure and reducing device management and support overhead. With BYO, IT no longer has to own, manage and onboard devices, yet they can support a heterogeneous device environment. These savings enable IT to focus on new strategic initiatives.

Strategic decision makers find that BYO helps attract and retain high-quality employees while increasing employee productivity. Employees (especially Gen-V) feel empowered with the freedom and flexibility to work on the device of their choice. A successful BYO program also streamlines business processes, resulting in increased efficiency, reduced overhead and increased employee satisfaction.

Key considerations of BYO The concept of BYO is exciting and innovative, but it comes with a unique set of technical challenges and considerations. From a business perspective, companies must consider the financial, legal, implementation and support elements of a BYO program. On the technical side of BYO, IT and security teams need to understand, plan and implement a solution that adheres to existing policies and compliance requirements. Top of mind for IT when thinking about BYO are:

• Applications and desktops – BYO is about providing access to corporate applications, desktops and data from any device. A virtual desktop and on-demand application infrastructure is a fundamental requirement that allows employees to access what they need without having to install applications or have IT image their device.

• Corporate data security – Security is an important consideration because IT no longer owns and manages the device. Corporate data and intellectual property must remain secure even when being accessed from a BYO device, while still giving the user the power to be their own device administrator.

• Remote access – Remote access for employees is not new, but BYO highlights the need for a universal secure remote access solution that doesn’t require retraining or help desk support when switching from devices or locations. BYO users must have a simple and consistent way to access their corporate applications and desktops from whatever location and device they choose.

• Device heterogeneity – BYO allows employees the freedom to choose the device that suits their lifestyle, not choose from a small list of corporate-approved devices. BYO programs must support the widest range of platforms and device types, as well as be backed by technology that keeps pace with new devices.

• Self-service – Once employees join a BYO program, they must have an easy and intuitive way to connect their device of choice with corporate applications and desktops. Universal self-service onboarding without IT intervention saves IT time and money, while enriching the BYO employee experience.

The Citrix solutionWith over twenty years of on-demand application and desktop virtualization experience, Citrix provides a complete end-to-end solution for BYO programs that solves all of the technical considerations and requirements. The Citrix solution for BYO is based on Citrix® XenDesktop®—a complete solution that begins in the datacenter with virtual desktops and on-demand applications and extends to the endpoint device with Citrix Receiver™ for universal access to virtual desktops, Windows, web and SaaS applications, and IT services. XenDesktop includes secure remote access to these resources with Citrix Access Gateway™ , and Citrix® XenVault™ extends company-wide security standards by protecting data in an encrypted file on the local device. The virtual infrastructure can be powered by Citrix® XenServer® and Citrix Provisioning Services™ scales the virtual desktop infrastructure to thousands of desktops.

Virtual desktopsDesktop virtualization abstracts the desktop workload—including the operating system and applications—from the desktop hardware. Combined with server virtualization, multiple desktops can be secured and run on the same host server in a datacenter completely isolated from one another.

XenDesktop is a desktop virtualization and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution that delivers a complete Windows desktop experience as an on-demand service to any user, anywhere. XenDesktop quickly and securely delivers individual applications or complete desktops while providing a high-definition user experience. XenDesktop is ideal for BYO because IT can deliver a complete desktop experience, including on-demand applications, to any device from any location. This means BYO users can pick the device that suits their personal lifestyle, but still access a familiar Windows virtual desktop for business that IT manages.

Different types of BYO users need different types of desktops. Some require simplicity and standardization, while others require high performance and personalization. Citrix® FlexCast™ delivery technology, included in XenDesktop, enables IT to deliver any type of desktop, on any device. Unlike first-generation VDI solutions that were applicable only to a narrow set of users, XenDesktop with FlexCast is the first product in the industry to support every desktop virtualization model in a single, integrated solution. This approach extends the benefits of virtualization to every employee in the enterprise. With the full integration of Citrix® XenApp™ functionality, customers can deliver on-demand applications as a seamless part of their overall desktop management strategy.

XenDesktop also includes Citrix® HDX™, a set of capabilities that delivers a high-definition experience to users for any desktop, application, device or network. Capabilities such as HDX Plug-n-Play (simple connectivity to peripheral devices), HDX RealTime (voice and video for real-time collaboration) and HDX Media Stream (seamless multimedia experience) empower users to make any device a high-definition desktop BYO device.

On-demand applicationsOn-demand application delivery, powered by XenApp, is the solution that enables applications to be centralized and managed in the datacenter and instantly delivered as a service to users anywhere. On-demand applications offer both online and offline application access through a combination of session and application virtualization.

Session virtualization uses application streaming to deliver applications to hosting servers in the datacenter. When users want to run an on-demand application, they are connected to a virtual instance of that application, which executes entirely in the XenApp farm. The user interacts with the application by sending mouse-clicks and keystrokes to the server and the server then responds by sending screen updates back to the user’s device. Session virtualization allows BYO users to access all of their applications from any device or platform of their choice any—Windows, Mac, Linux, tablets and smartphones.

When offline access to applications from Windows-based PCs is desired, on-demand applications are streamed from a centralized location into an isolation environment on the device. The applications are not installed in the traditional sense. The application files, configuration and settings are copied to the target device and the application execution at run time is controlled by the application virtualization layer. When a user runs the application, the application believes that it is interfacing directly with the operating system when, in fact, it is interfacing with a virtualization environment that proxies all requests to the operating system. Best off all, the BYO user doesn’t need to install any applications or drivers in order to use their applications.

Corporate data security Protecting data and intellectual property for all employees, whether BYO user, contractor or office, is top of mind for IT organizations. Citrix solutions enable IT to deliver virtual desktops and applications to any device while ensuring that the data remains secure in the datacenter or on the local device, without compromising security policies or regulatory compliance requirements.

Centralizing applications and data in the datacenter ensures that virtual desktop and application delivery is secure by design. With XenDesktop, all of the data and intellectual property can be safely contained in the datacenter, even when being accessed from a remote device. Policies ensure that users connect to specific desktops, applications and data, and that only screen updates, mouse clicks, and keystrokes—not data—transit the network. Advanced data and access control policies (powered by Citrix Access Gateway™), encrypted connectivity, policy-based password management and session monitoring ensure encryption security for all data from the datacenter to the device.

When Windows-based laptop users need offline access to data, Citrix® XenVault™ extends the built-in security protection provided by XenApp by protecting data in an encrypted file on the local device to prevent unauthorized access to intellectual property and sensitive business information. XenVault uses 256 bit AES encryption to protect and save XenApp and Microsoft® App-V™ application data in dedicated safe zones, and users can access, store and share data without compromising the security of the information when working offline. IT can centrally manage encryption with granular application and data access policies, and can easily lock and delete data in the event of loss, theft or termination. Administrators can establish time-based lockout

periods and implement self-service password resets-unlocks, enhancing user experience while maintaining security and control of the local device. All of this happens without impacting or changing the users’ personal side of their BYO laptop.

Remote accessThe global and mobile workplace of today is no longer bound by the walls of the office and hours of 9 to 5. Business happens whenever and wherever employees are and they demand access to this virtual workplace. BYO can respond by workshifting—accessing their virtual desktops and applications from any location via any network available—wired or wireless, private or public.

XenDesktop includes Citrix Access Gateway, the secure desktop and application access solution that provides administrators granular application-level control while empowering users with remote access from anywhere. It gives IT administrators a single solution for managing virtual desktop and on-demand application access based on both user, location and the posture of endpoint device, providing better application security, data protection and compliance management.

The SmartAccess capabilities of XenDesktop allows administrators to manage access control and set policies that define acceptable actions based on user identity and the configuration of the endpoint device. For example, a user may have full access (save locally, print, and so forth) to a set of files when using a corporate device, but may be restricted to saving data only in the datacenter from a BYO device. Similarly, if a BYO employee tries to log in to the corporate network without an active anti-virus service, that employee may be redirected to an IT service to remediate the issue. With SmartAccess, administrators have the ultimate flexibility to develop and implement corporate policies that enforce data and application security.

Device heterogeneityThe proliferation of devices entering the workplace continues to create new requirements for the enterprise. XenDesktop delivers virtual desktops and on-demand applications to any device with Citrix Receiver™. Citrix Receiver is a high-performance, universal client technology that enables IT to deliver virtual desktops, Windows, web and SaaS applications and content as an on-demand service to any device. Universal support for a wide variety of browsers—Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari—means the widest range of devices can be used for BYO. Citrix Receiver is ideal for BYO because IT has complete control over security, performance and user experience, without needing to own or manage the physical device or its location. With Citrix Receiver, IT can easily support a heterogeneous BYO environment, while expediting the onboarding of these devices.

Citrix Receiver gives BYO users an easy way to bring their device into the corporate network without compromising security or involving IT. With Citrix Receiver, any device, including Windows-based PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones, can be used within the enterprise. Employees simply install Citrix Receiver on their own device to gain access to all of their business, Web and SaaS-based applications.

Self serviceOne of the major value propositions of BYO programs is that IT departments get out of the business of managing and provisioning employees devices. This not only saves IT time and money, but lets them concentrate on strategic initiatives. To accomplish this, users must have a way to on-board their devices and choose the applications they need, without involving IT.

Citrix Receiver transparently installs all of the components users need to access their desktop, applications, data and IT services from any device or location. With a single login, users have simple and intuitive self-service access to a full catalog of desktops, applications, and IT and business services from a personalized enterprise storefront. Users can easily browse and select a full range of business services on demand while centralized management allows IT to maintain control and instantly advertise, add, update or remove available applications and services to users based on preferences and credentials.

BYO users perspectiveFor any BYO program to be successful, the employees must want to adopt the program and must be satisfied with the experience of using their own device. It is paramount that their experience is better than or equal to the corporate device experience. Providing them with a fast and intuitive way to do self-service onboarding, without involving IT is also important. Citrix Receiver delivers these requirements by addressing three main objectives:

• Any device, anywhere

• Self-service IT

• Virtual desktops, applications and IT services on-demand

BYO employees begin by transforming their device of choice—PC, Mac, netbook, tablet or smartphone—into a powerful business tool. Employees install Citrix Receiver themselves by either downloading it to their PC or Mac or by installing it from a device-appropriate app store.

Citrix Receiver transparently installs all of the relevant plug-ins. Citrix Receiver makes BYO easy because IT only maintains one service that works for all users (BYO and non-BYO) and all devices.

Once BYO employees install Citrix Receiver, they are ready to access their specific portfolio of applications, desktops and IT services relevant to their job. Instead of installing corporate-owned applications on their device or handing it over to IT for imaging, Citrix Receiver lets employees choose the specific resources they need.
