We really value the contribution that you make to your son/daughter’s education and we would like to thank you for this. Whilst the vast majority of parents/carers are fully supportive of the school, we have been having an in- creasing number of discussions with parents about sanctions that have been put in place by their class- room teachers. We have a very rigorous quality assurance system here to check that our staff follow correct procedures and are confident that their use of the school systems is appropriate and justified. Our staff are extremely professional, very focused and dedicated to help your son/daughter achieve and be their very best and any decision by them to sanction pupils is taken with this in mind. Can parents therefore continue to reinforce the need for pupils to remain focused and on task so that they can be fully prepared for the summer GCSE exams. Have a happy and restful half term. Year 11 Reports On Wednesday 8th February your son/daughter was issued with their subject reports for Science, MFL, Art, PE, Drama and BTEC Business Studies. If you have not received these, please contact the school office and we can organise copies for you. The next set of subject reports will be issued before the East- er holiday and will include comments and targets from; English, History, Geography, ICT, Music, Maths, DT subjects, Religious Studies and Computer Science. We hope that you will find these useful in the build up to your son/daughter’s GCSE summer exams.

Headteacher’s Address

As we approach the end of what has been an extremely busy half term for both pupils and staff, we would like to thank you for your continued support and informative discussions at Parents’ Consultation Evening. We really value the contribution that you make to your son/daughter’s education and we would like to thank you for this. Whilst the vast majority of parents/carers are fully supportive of the school, we have been having an in-creasing number of discussions with parents about sanctions that have been put in place by their class-room teachers.

MUSIC We are pleased to say that the majority of pupils within the GCSE group increased their listening exam grade by a minimum of two grades since the start of September in their recent mock exam, which is a fantastic achievement, but they are still capable of doing even better. Pupils spent more than the exam controlled assessment time focusing on performance in Year 10 and so therefore we will be focusing predominately on composition, written work and the listening paper during the next term. Pupils are more than welcome to come up to the department to rehearse their performance pieces during lunchtimes and after school as priority will be given to Year 11 GCSE pupils. They are also encouraged to come along and continue with any composition or written work as staff will be more than willing to help and support them to achieve their potential. Year 11 GCSE Music dates - Final Ensemble Performance Friday 10th March 2017 by 1.15pm Composition 2 (10% of GCSE 10 hours Controlled Assessment Wednesday 5th April 2017 by 4.00pm Log and Evaluation (5% of GCSE) Friday 7th April 2017 by 3.30pm Must be handed in as a print out and an electronic copy Creative Task Exam: External Exam worth 20% of GCSE Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd May 2017

MATHS All pupils will be working on a programme of past papers for revision and this will start with

a paper to do over half term. Please encourage pupils to complete these to the very best of their ability; these are the most crucial element of revision. Following half term, pupils will get at least one past paper per week.

Extra revision for Higher Paper Pupils is taking place on a Thursday lunchtime in J28 11B3 has revision sessions available on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in J14 11B2, 11A2 and 11B1 have revision for higher topics after school on a Friday in J22 After half term some foundation pupils will begin “Maths Futures” revision during PDM time.

This will involve them being mentored by higher paper students. This will be a major bene-fit to both mentor and mentee.

Some higher pupils will also receive support with their past paper revision from A Level stu-dents during PDM time.

Revision guides and workbooks are available from Mr. Brown at a cost of £5 each.

DRAMA GCSE Year: Unit 3 externally assessed exam (40% of final qualification) 1st and 2nd March (all day) GCSE students will also be invited to attend school for three days of February half term to re-hearse for their exam due to how tight the deadlines are. A letter will follow if this affects your son/daughter.

MFL—Revision Tip

Geography Year 11 students are progressing through their penultimate topic of their course (Mr Hancock and Mr Gibson's classes are midway through The Restless Earth, whilst Mr Mullarkey's classes are midway through Tourism). The latest edition of the geography magazine has been distributed to those students who subscribed at the start of the year (February 2017). As ever, this is full of useful and up-to-date geography. All students need to be starting their revision programme and class teachers will be providing further information on, not only what to revise, but also the most efficient forms of revision. A reminder that students can access examination papers (and mark schemes) from previous years by browsing the AQA website http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/geography/gcse/geography-a-9030/past-papers-and-mark-schemes

Religious Studies RS (OCR Religious Studies B: Philosophy and Applied Ethics [J621]) Pupils have just completed end of unit assessments with both teachers and are about to start the final two topic areas: Wealth and Poverty (FFR) Religion and the Media (SAM) Revision sessions for all will continue to run at lunchtime on Wednesdays in J3. Selected pupils will also be invited to attend PDM sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays after half term; this will be indi-cated on a revised timetable issued February 27th. Finally can we remind you that the course outline and past papers etc can be found online at www.ocr.org.uk but paper copies are available from either teacher.

When revising for your spoken or written CA, things NOT to do:

leave it to the last minute / the night before, as:

your brain will over heat!;

you’ll only remember the first bit and will underachieve massive-

ly because you WON’T remember the second half.

panic!

practise at all because you think you’re rubbish, so there’s no point!

not write it or say it out loud at all!

stare at a page of writing for hours, hoping the words will magically

transform themselves to your head / mouth, in order for you to

write / say your assessment successfully!!
