students for the admirable way in which they not only engaged with this initiative but also for the way that they represented our school. They are exceptional ambassadors.

The students prepared a short video summarising their experience which can be seen on the school website: www.elthamhs.vic.edu.au

I congratulate Sarah Dunn (Year 9, Everard House) on her success in being accepted into the University of Melbourne Girl Power in STEMM program.

Sarah is over the moon and really looking forward to the opportunity. Sarah wrote a great application; however, she was one of 7 really amazing applicants from Eltham High School; I therefore also congratulate Kinga Jaworska (Year 9, Everard House); Stephanie Richards (Year 9, Andrew House); Stephanie Kervin (Year 9, Stewart House); Jemma Haber (Year 9, Stewart House); Paige Mihaljevic (Year 9, Stewart House); Breeana Laidlay (Year 9, Everard House).

The seven girls put a great deal of effort into their application and any one of them would have been an excellent ambassador for our school. I want to thank them to embracing this opportunity and putting their hand up to be part of the selection process, this in itself is a great experience. I am sure that Sarah will represent each and everyone of you to the best of her ability and we all look forward to hearing back from Sarah as she engages with the program.

I take this opportunity to thank Cameron Laurence for his support of each of the girls and of course all the staff that took time to prepare supporting documentation which accompanied each of the applications. With 400 applicants from across the state and only 30 places to fill, I guess that the University would not have been able to allocate a number of these places to students form the same school. I am sure that many more opportunities will most certainly open up for our students as the year progresses.

Well done Sarah!

Rock2Top:

In speaking with students and staff who participated on the Rock2Top Tour, I can say to you that the trip was a great success. Students really enjoyed their time away and the experiences that the trip provided for them. Staff reported that the students were excellent (as expected) and that they also really enjoyed the trip. These opportunities would not occur without the willingness and hard work of the staff so I take this opportunity, and on behalf of all the students that participated, to thank Phil Boyd (Tour Leader), Bree Pascoe, Ashleigh Oates and Nick Copper for making this trip possible.

WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY REPORT On the 22 June, Eltham High School’s Semester One Whole School Assembly highlighted the school value of Social and Environmental Responsibility and the way in which it underpins all that we do at Eltham High School. In accordance with this fundamental value, we organised an assembly in collaboration with the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group that would celebrate the rich and enduring indigenous culture which continues to positively influence Modern Australia.

The idea for the assembly arose through recognising the crucial importance of furthering our understanding of the unwarranted atrocities and mistreatment Indigenous Australians have suffered throughout Australia’s past and that have left a legacy which continues in the present. We must empathise and understand as a community if we are to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are not subjected to the same injustices again.

As well as making efforts to reconcile the wrongs of the past, it is imperative that we enhance our understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture of the land on which we gather each day to learn. Rather than reduce the culture and experiences of indigenous people to statistics, facts and historical perspectives – we invited guests to provide the school community with an immersive insight into the culture of Indigenous Australians.

Brooke Collins is a Wurundjeri woman who spoke passionately about her experiences and connection with Aboriginal culture. Brooke shared numerous creation stories that enabled listeners to grasp the unique culture of the Wurundjeri people and the connection they have had with the land for thousands of years. Brooke then spoke of the history of her ancestors and their lives on the Coranderkk Aboriginal Station in Healesville. Perhaps the most insightful element of Brooke’s speech was when she asked us to contemplate that whilst non-indigenous Australians have sought to reconcile our actions in the past few decades, Aboriginal people have been actively trying to do so since European arrival.

Mandy Nicholson and the Djirri Djirri Dancers delivered a mesmerising performance of traditional Aboriginal dance. Mandy explained each of the components of their dress and the meaning of each of the dances which were symbolic of creation, women, family and country. Mandy also spoke of her role in preserving and teaching the Woiwurrung language, which is the native language of the Wurundjeri people.

Jessarne Palmer (Year 10, Everard House) and Luca Johns (Year Ten Rutter House) then shared their experiences on the Iga Warta Trip. The pair eloquently spoke about what the trip taught them about indigenous culture and the importance of reconciliation. Tim Natoli then presented Jon Baly with the Staff Award for his hard work and dedication in organising the Arnhem Land and Iga Warta trips and contributions to the Cornerstone study ‘Home and Place’.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the guest speakers for the valuable insights they shared into their rich and unique culture. We’d also like to thank the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group who are committed to furthering the process of reconciliation with Indigenous Australians. The Nillumbik Reconciliation Group work hard to educate the community about the ongoing effects of hardships Indigenous people have faced, raise awareness about aboriginal culture, work with the Nillumbik shire and more. To thank them, we presented the group with a handcrafted Aboriginal Flag made of collated student responses to the question ‘What does Reconciliation mean to you?’.

As members of the Eltham High School Community, we ask that you join us in committing to furthering our understanding of indigenous culture and recognising the important role it has in the formation of Australia’s national identity. As a community we must tenaciously undertake the extensive work that is required to allow for a reconciled, equal and unified Australia.

Brock Manson, Year 12 School Leader

Staff v Student Basketball Match

The Staff v Students Basketball match was held on 17 June, the last day of Term 2. It was a nail biting contest both Gavin Abrahams and Nic Cooper were able to hit the scoreboard early giving the staff a 2 point half time lead. The students wasted multiple opportunities in the second half through primarliy through lack of discipline. The staff once again dominated the early part of the 2nd half leading by 8 points with just 2 minutes remaining - the game looked over. Nick Bassett-Smith (12A Andrew House) led the revival, getting the students back to within 2 points with only 10 seconds left and with possession of the ball. Jhye Burton (12A Andrew House) had the entire crowd on their feet taking a 3 point shot on the buzzer which........MISSED! The staff were once again victorious! Congratulations to all Year 12 students and staff for a very enjoyable and good spirited game

CROSS COUNTRY SKI DAY TRIP Do you like the snow? Never been but would like to try? Like to try cross country skiing? All students are invited to participate in a 1 day cross country ski trip to Lake Mountain on Tuesday August 9. The cost for the trip will be $95, which includes transport and entry, ski hire, and a 90 minute lesson. The trip will be run by Ross McKinnon, who is an experienced outdoor teacher as well as being a member of the Lake Mountain Ski Patrol. Detailed information, including gear lists and consent forms, will be available at a meeting to be held on Thursday July 21, and afterwards from Mr McKinnon in the Middle School Office. The meeting will be held at 1.20pm (lunchtime) on Thursday July 21 in room 908. Payment and paperwork is required by Friday 29 July. If the trip is cancelled due to insufficient snow all payments will be refunded. There are only 20 places avail-able, and these will be allocated to the first 20 students to pay and return paperwork to the office. The paperwork needs to be collected at the meeting on Thursday July 21 or afterwards from the Middle School Office. The Compass Portal cannot be used for pay-ment or to provide consent.

COMMUNITY NEWS10

Eligibility: The group is for young women 16-20 years of age that live / work / study In the Northern Metropolitan Region and have experienced some form of physical, sexual or emotional abuse or other trauma. Although Northern Centre Against Sexual Assault is co-facilitating the group, young women participating do not necessarily have to have disclosed a past sexual assault experience in order to be eligible. This is because we are aware that often young women may have experienced sexual assault, but are yet to disclose this to anyone or seek support about it. One aim of the group is to therefore promote Northern Centre Against Sexual assault to young women.

What is it all about? The group is not a ‘talk therapy’ group, but rather will be aimed at using music to promote enjoyment, relaxation, building relationships and identifying strengths. Young women will be given a say as to the activities we engage in and NO musical experience or skill is necessary to participate. We are aware the idea of a ‘music therapy’ group may seem strange to young women, so instead our focus will be on using musical experiences (e.g. music listening, song-writing, drumming, playing, singing) to have fun and to promote connection, empowerment and relaxation – all things that assist with trauma recovery. If young women are not sure about the group, we are of-fering two ‘taster’ Music Workshops for young women prior to it starting and there is no obligation to go on to do the six-week group after participating in these. Please see the flyer for details.
