KEY VERSE [Jesus] said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.”

Matthew 26:38

Jesus wants us by his side—even when we don’t understand why.

Twist chenille stem around center of web to make a hanger.

Peter, John, and James• 3 favored

disciples that Jesus often chose for key moments (Mt 17:1; 26:37; Mk 1:29; 5:37; 13:3).

• Ask to stay with Jesus as he prays, but still let him down by falling asleep.

• Don’t know this is their last night with Jesus before his execution.

• Rabbinic law stated that the Passover was over when someone fell into a deep sleep.

The Disciples• Meeting in secret to eat together

on the first night of Passover (Mk 14:12-15).

• All run away when Jesus is arrested. Jesus knew from prophecy that this would happen (Zech 13:7, Mk 14:27).

Passover• An annual celebration when

Jews would sacrifice a lamb at the temple, then eat it for dinner to remember their escape from slavery in Egypt.

• A time of year when the Roman authorities were very concerned about Jewish revolts.

Chief Priests• Want to arrest

Jesus, but fear a riot if they do it in public during Passover (Mk 14:1-2).

• Pay Judas to betray Jesus.

• Capture Jesus with a large, armed crowd as if he were a dangerous bandit.

Jesus• Says that his

blood will soon spill, but will create a covenant for forgiving sins.

• Says the words of institution for communion that Christians still repeat 2,000 years later.

• Dreads his coming death. Promises to obey God, but begs God to find another way.

• Doesn’t fight back when the crowd comes to arrest him.

Garden of Gethsemane• The place where Jesus goes to

pray and await his arrest.

• An olive orchard. Name means “garden of oil.”

• Prophesied in Zechariah 14:4.

RELATE CONNECT

Get ReadySometimes when kids or grown-ups have a goal they want to reach, it’s easier to call it a dream.

• What goal do you have?

• When you dream about your goal, do you see the work you need to do or only see yourself reaching the goal?

• Who do you see helping you reach your goal?

• I wonder if dreaming about a goal helps it come true.

• What is the difference between dreaming and praying?

Introduce the Characters• Jesus and his disciples are in Jerusalem for the first night

of Passover.

• The Passover meal celebrates Jewish people’s escape from slavery in Egypt.

• Jerusalem’s religious leaders want Jesus arrested, because people are paying more attention to Jesus than to them.

• Jesus knows this is the last time he’ll be with his friends.

• He wants his friends beside him.

Play the Maundy Thursday Video

Talk about the Maundy Thursday Video• Jesus shared bread and wine with the disciples. Talk

about when and how bread and wine is shared in church.

• I wonder what the disciples would have done differently if they had known it was the last time Jesus would be with them.

• How do you feel on the last day of school? Of summer vacation? When with a friend who is moving?

• How did Jesus prepare for what was going to happen?

Open the Connect BibleHelp kids find and mark Matthew 26:38 on page 1109.

• What title does your Bible give to the story where you found this verse?

• How many times does Jesus talk with God?

• What does Jesus say?

Do the Matthew 26: 36-46 Connect Bible Activity on page 1110.

• What does it mean to be grieved? Agitated?

• Jesus wanted his disciples close by, but not right next to him. When you have a tough time, do you want to be alone or close by family and friends?

• When have you been so sad you couldn’t think about or do anything else?
