Yamaga Yasutar3 was born on the 30th day of the 3rd month of the 19th year

of Meiji (1886) in Toyohama, Toyoda County, Hiroshima Prefecture . He came to

Canada on the mail steamer Aki Maru in 1908 with "a dream of becoming the owne r

of 5000 acres of golden field of the Canadian Prairies ." His decision to settl e

in Haney, B .C . was influenced by Mr . Inoue Jiro who had written articles in th e

Japanese press stating that strawberry fanning was so profitable that one coul d

save ten thousand dollars in ten years . Eventually Yamaga was able to buy ten

acres of Haney bushland . Unlike many Japanese immigrants who only came to see k

the fortune that would allow them to return to their native land as wealthy men ,

Yamaga Yasutar"6 intended to stay . He used his English language skills to assis t

his neighbors . He was instrumental in the establishment of the Haney Fruit Ran-

chers Association, the Japanese Language School, the Kindergarten, and the PTA .

He was so well respected in the community that he was selected as the only Japan -

ese member of a five man committee which considered offers on the Japanese Farm s

in the Fraser Valley during the disposition of Japanese property in 1942 . In

the early 1950's, Yamaga became conscious of the plight of Japanese senior citizen s

in Canada and made a study of facilities available to them . Due to his inexhaus-

tible energy and a donation of $25000 from his personal savings, the Nipponia Hom e

for aged Japanese was opened in 1958 in Beamsville Ontario . Yamaga YasutarO died

in 197 .

This collection which comprises 1 .5 linear meters (4'10") is largely compose d

of materials related to the Haney Agricultural Association (Hens NOkai), the Nip -

ponia Home . It also covers such subjects as the history of the Japanese Canadian

Page 5: YAMAGA YASUTARO AN INVENTORY OF HIS PAPERS IN THE …rbscarchives.library.ubc.ca/uploads/r/university-of-british-columbia... · 3-8 Sekicho wa unaru The Stone Bream Roars 3-9 Senjikakurei

United Church, the treatment of the Japanese in Canada during WWII . and

the broad category of the history of the Japanese people in Canada .

Regarding the methodology of this inventory ; all Japanese titles have

been transliterated according to the accepted standards (i .e . Hepburn system

of romanization) and are followed by an English translation . This practice

makes the material available to scholars who are examining the collectio n

with the assistence of a research assistant competent in the language as wel l

as to those who are themselves skilled in the Japanese language . As for

Japanese names, the accepted practice in Asian Studies circles is to place

the surname before the personal name, in the Japanese fashion . The problem

arises where Japanese immigrants have adopted the Western way . To avoid

confusion, I have underlined all surnames .

I would like to thank Mr . Gonnami Tsuneharu of the Asian Studies Library

for his tireless and painstaking assistance in the preparation of this in-

ventory . I would also like to apologize in advance for any errors in trans-

lation, et cetera which are due to my imperfect grasp of the Japanese language .

Prior to receiving this collection from Dr. Shimpo, The Nipponia Home

donated ca . 10 cm. of material relating mainly to his activities with th e

Nipponia Home, Hamilton United Church, and personal matters . An inventory

can be consulted in the Japanese Canadian Manuscript Collection Inventory, p . 61 .
