Introduction

The George Frederick Cameron Paper s

George Frederick Cameron was born in New Glasgow, Nov aScotia, on September 24, 1854, the eldest son of James Gran tCameron and Jessie Sutherland . He was educated at the local highschool, then, having moved to Boston with his family, studied lawat the Boston University of Law in 1872 .

Upon graduation heentered the law office of Dean Butler and Abbot in Boston .

Hesubsequently returned to Canada to live and attend Queen ' sUniversity .

On August 22, 1883, he married Ella Amey, and th efollowing year their daughter Jessie was born .

He died onSeptember 17, 1885 .

A Canadian poet and journalist, George Frederick Camero nfollowed his avocation from an early age . While still in schoo lhe spent most of his spare time writing poetry, and he had rea dmuch of Virgil and Cicero in the original by the time he wa sthirteen .

He became a frequent contributor to such publication sas Commercial Bulletin, Traveller, Courier, and Transcript ofthe new Athens of America .

In 1882 he became editor of th eKingston News .

He was the prize poet at Queen 's University i n1883 . Approximately one forth of his life works have bee npublished in a book Lyrics on Freedom Love and Death, edited byhis brother, Charles J . Cameron, and published posthumously in1887 .

Guide to the Inventory

The Cameron Papers are contained in one box and include alarge number of the poems of George Frederick Cameron handwritte nin notebooks by his brother, typewritten, and a few in printe dform .

The notebooks also contain notations relating to th epublication of the poetry in book form .

Many of the works referto people and events from the life of the poet

- hi smother, brother, sister, wedding day, daughter ' s first birthday ,and many romantic interests . Others make reference to specia linterests, especially relating to the themes of freedom, love an ddeath on which his book is based .
