The new school year is here; how can teachers, students and caregivers adequately prepare for the pandemic’s drastically changed learning environment and so much uncertainty? Enter the MindShift podcast. One of the most popular podcasts for parents and teachers, the series offers listeners an inside look at how schools are developing solutions to meet students’ needs in person and online.

Social bonds are essential to everyone, but how do you develop and maintain them from a physical distance? Hosts Ki Sung and Katrina Schwartz explore how educators and students are working

to strengthen these bonds to create a strong foundation for ın-person and online learning. Episodes also focus on how educators navigated the first semester of the coronavirus pandemic, what does and doesn’t work, and what they’ve learned. In addition, the episodes feature the voices of young people who share how this difficult time has affected their lives.

New episodes of the MindShift podcast are available every other Tuesday through September 8, free of charge, on Apple Podcasts, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts or at kqed.org/mindshiftpodcast.

KQED has been honored with two Northern California Emmy® awards by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which recognizes excellence in all fields of television and online production.

KQED Arts & Culture won an Emmy for “Portraits of Napa Workers: Arleene Correa Valencia” in the Public/Current/Community Affairs-Feature/Segment category. The video features Mexican artist Arleene Correa Valencia, who focuses on the resilience and tireless work ethic of her Latinx community. The episode is part of KQED Arts & Culture’s Represent series, which profiles artists who celebrate and uplift the experiences of their communities (Kelly Whalen, producer; Armando Aparicio, director/director of photography; Elie Khadra, editor).

KQED Science’s Deep Look won an Emmy Award for “The Curious Webspinner Insect Knits a Cozy Home” in the Health/Science/Environment-Feature/Segment

category. The video explores how female webspinners build their shelter with super-fine silk from their feet. A collaboration between KQED Science and PBS, the Deep Look series explores some of nature’s biggest mysteries by going incredibly small (Gabriela V. Quiros, coordinating producer; Craig Rosa, seriesproducer; Jenny Oh, producer/writer/editor; JoshuaCassidy, cinematographer; Kia Simon, editor/motiongraphics; Seth Samuel, composer; Shirley Gutierrez, sound mix/video mastering).

In addition, KQED was nominated for: “Johnathan Calm Revisits 'Green Book’ Locations in Search of America’s Past and Present” and “Deep Look: Kidnapper Ants Steal Other Ants’ Babies – and Brainwash Them.”

Airs Saturdays in August at 9pmThe United States is at the beginning of a reckoning. Protests against police brutality continue nationwide and anti-racist activists are demanding change. Companies and institutions are being called upon to examine their roots in white supremacy and their complicity in upholding racist systems. And individual people are looking inward at their own biases and the ways in which they’ve been complicit in racism, too. It’s a time for hard truths and hard conversations about race, and how it seeps into every

aspect of society and life. Join host Rebecca Carroll for this five-part series where she’ll hold essential conversations about race at this pivotal moment. Guests include Issa Rae, Don Lemon, Gabrielle Union, and Brittany Packnett Cunningham.

Airs August 10-14 at 6:22am and 8:22am California is ill-prepared to protect the lives of the growing population of elderly people who live in high-risk wildfire areas and the COVID-19 pandemic is making emergency preparedness even more difficult. Older and Overlooked in Wildfire Country is a KQED five-part radio and online series that takes an in-depth look at who’s vulnerable to the hazard of wildfire in long-term care homes and how counties and facilities are coping with that threat during a global pandemic. Using public records, our reporters analyzed more than eight thousand California nursing homes and assisted- living facilities for wildfire risk to determine how prepared long-term care homes are for disasters. The series is also available online at kqed.org/wildfires.

Explore PBS’ Race in America CollectionSome of the most powerful films I’ve ever seen are available to stream now in PBS’ curated Race in America collection. With content from filmmakers including Stanley Nelson and Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., the collection includes Tell Them We Are Rising; The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross; and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise. If you’re looking for somewhere to start, I highly recommend Gates’ Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, a four-part series. It explores the transformative years when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss. It also focuses on how African Americans forged a new, more equal place in American social, economic and political life only to face the backlash of segregation, white supremacy and institutionalized discrimination, whose legacy persists today. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming

British Sleuth Show Endeavour on Masterpiece Is Back for Season 7 I love British detective shows because they often leave out the gobs of gratuitous gore and violence you tend to see in American detective series. I’m no wimp; I’m just more partial to whodunit and why whodunit dunit, especially if it’s clever and plot-twisty.

That’s one of the reasons I’m a fan of Endeavour on Masterpiece, a prequel to Inspector Morse, which was reportedly viewed by 85 percent of the British public, including the queen. Endeavour takes us back in time to Morse’s earlier life (this time in 1970). He’s a quirky, brainy loner who loves opera, classical music and ale. Working in Oxford alongside Detective Inspector Thursday, Morse chases murderers and solves crimes — in a most British sleuthy sort of way.

Season 7 kicks off with Morse at a Venice (where else?) opera house as the 1970 new year begins. There’s a murder in Oxford, Thursday is on it and Morse heads back to help him. Old friendships are strained and new ones formed. In Episode 2, two rival gangs clash. And in Episode 3, Morse investigates what appears to be a freak accident at a college, or is it? Catch Episode 1 on Sunday, August 9, at 9pm on KQED 9. If you’d rather binge all of Season 7 and you’re a KQED Passport member, you can stream the whole season the night it premiers on broadcast. —Ellyn Hament

DID YOU KNOW? • Kate Warne was an American law enforcement officer believed to be the first female

detective in 1856.

• A master of disguise, Maude West founded a detective agency in England in 1905. She was London’s only female private detective at the time.

• In 1916, Georgia Ann Robinson reportedly became the first Black female police officer at the

Los Angeles Police department; possibly the first in the U.S. She investigated juvenile and

homicide cases and devoted her life to fighting against segregation and for women's welfare.

This 1953 Academy Award-winning film stars Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Deborah Kerr and Burt Lanchaster.
