Letters to the Romans Page 2

On August 27, 2008 Ed Jones, a great grandson of Rev. George Washington Wilson, visited St Peter’s Episcopal Church. His great grandfather, Rev Wilson, was the pastor at St Peter’s from July 1880 to November 1883. Ed, a resident of Renton, Washington, was in Atlanta during the week for a business meeting and took the opportunity to visit Rome for the first time. He wanted to see St Peter’s Episcopal Church where his great grandfather was the pastor and the cemetery where he was buried.    In Dr. C. J. Wyatt’s book published in 1994 titled Upon this Rock, 150 years in the Life of St. Peter’s Church, Rome, it is noted that Rev Wilson’s daughter Clara Rosa was born while Rev Wilson was the pastor. It also states that when her father, Rev Wilson, died in 1883, Clara Rosa and her mother left Rome. As a young adult, Clara Rosa graduated from college in Iowa. After marrying Roland Jones, the couple moved to Washington State, where they raised two sons, and two daughters on a farm in Satus, Washington, a very small town in Eastern Washington.  Ed is the son of Clara Rosa’s son, David Jones.    Although Ed had never visited Rome before, two of his aunts and one cousin, all from Washington State, had visited the church.  In the 1990’s, Clara Rosa’s family members paid for a grave marker to be placed on Rev Wilson’s grave and her two daughters came to the dedication ceremony.  They had the marker placed on the grave because when Rev Wilson was buried no marker was put on his grave,    Since Ed and a few of his family members had met C.J. and Barbara Wyatt in the past, in advance of the visit he contacted Terri Borchardt via e‐mail and asked if she could arrange for him to meet with Barbara Wyatt.  Terri set up the meeting and they had a nice visit sharing stories.   The Reverend Greg Tallant, Associate Rector, took Barbara, Terri and Ed on a tour of the church and the chapel. In the church Ed took several pictures of the plaque dedicated to Rev George Wilson (above the piano). Also, Greg Tallant took a few pictures of Ed, and Ed and Barbara Wyatt standing in front of it.    The diamond‐shaped piece of polished marble, on which is mounted a brass cross, bears the following inscription:

 IHS

In loving memory of the Rev. George W. Wilson

Installed July 1880‐died installed Nov. 16, 1883 Faithful Until Death

Ed was impressed with the library that has shelves filled with notebooks filed by year with the history of the church.  Since there are several pages on file about Rev Wilson, Terri offered to scan the documents, copy them to a disk and send them to Ed. He accepted the offer and said he was excited to receive the disk and would make copies for family members.   Prior to leaving he purchased two copies of the C.J. Wyatt’s book on the history of the church.  He was also given copies of the church’s cookbook Our Best to You, and the book The Diocese of Atlanta, Centennial Celebration 1907 –2007.   Since there is not an office at the Myrtle Hills Cemetery, it was arranged for Ed to meet the director of the cemetery at the cemetery and be shown the gravesite of the Rev. Wilson.  In his rental car Ed followed Terri to the cemetery’s gate as she was taking Barbara Wyatt home.  Ed then drove up the hill to meet the director, who was parked at the gravesite in his truck.  Ed took pictures of the grave marker.  After chatting with director for 10‐15 minutes, the director gave Ed a book that was developed for students to use when studying the history of the cemetery. It is an excellent resource that can be down loaded from the city website.     Before leaving to catch his afternoon flight back to Seattle, Ed took a recommendation to visit the Rome Area History Museum where he made a quick tour of the museum and its exhibits before buying books about Rome.   Although he only had three hours for his visit to Rome, he said he greatly appreciated the time and effort the staff spent making his visit memorable.  He said he would share his stories, pictures and books with his family and encourage other family members to visit St Peters in Rome, Georgia. Ed, his wife and children are Episcopalians.

St Peter’s and its members are a generous community, I know.  During the holidays many families participate in charitable donations in many ways.  I work with the most vulnerable families in our community on a daily basis and I’m writing to say, children have needs year round.  Floyd County Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) has about 350 kids in foster care right now.  There are so many ways for individuals and families to get involved and support our communities’ children, but even with all the programs and organizations, some children are still not eligible for the assistance they need.  “The Wish List” is a list of items needed for children and case managers.    Some items may seem small, but other items are necessary for a child to return home. Please take a moment and look over the list and consider donating items.  If you would like to be on a monthly mailing list, please send an email to [email protected], subject “wish list.”

GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED   Donate old and new crayons and coloring books and activity books.  Broken crayons and half colored books accepted.  When children have to come into our office for investigations or family meetings or doctor visits (all of which can be a very scary experience), we do not have much to offer them as a distraction.  A few crayons and a coloring book can be a great stress reliever and familiar task for a young child, or a nice treat to take home.     Hopefully, some of you remember the very successful calendar drive done earlier this year. The calendars were very well received and continued donations are always welcomed.  For additional donation needs, please contact [email protected].   Need for Foster Homes   Remember those 350+ kids in foster care.  Although we try to place them with relatives, many children are not that fortunate and must be placed in a foster home.  We only have 33 foster homes in Floyd County which means the rest of these children are placed out of county or in a group home.  The popular foster home slogan is, “If you have room in your heart, you have room in your home.”  Local foster homes are one of the greatest needs we have, so if you are at all curious or have ever considered opening your home, please call 1‐877‐210‐KIDS (5437).  You can speak directly with a worker in our office.  If you aren’t able to open your home full time, there are still many other ways to assist and show appreciation for current foster parents.  Please contact Pam Ferguson at [email protected] or 706‐802‐5796 for more information.

Compassionate Paws, Inc. was established July 2007.  The mission of the organization is to provide comfort, presence, joy and learning within the context of the human‐animal companion bond.  This northwest Georgia all volunteer non‐profit (pending tax exempt status, applied for in 2008) gives to the local community through Pet Partner visits to hospitals, nursing homes, hospice and schools. Such visits can provide comfort, unconditional love and non‐judgmental listening to people of all ages, from the Alzheimer’s sufferer to a child who needs to improve reading skills.   St. Peter’s has contributed to the growth of this organization by providing space in Daniel Hall for 18 Pet Partners to be tested and certified by the Delta Society to become Pet Partners. We have two Pet Partners who are members of St. Peters: Jenna Black and her dog, Miles (deceased 9/13/08), and D’Ann Downey and her dog, Ayla, and her cat, Sinatra.  Lucas

Jennings created the website, www.romepaws.org. Jenna and D’Ann are also on the Board of Compassionate Paws.  A number of members of St. Peter’s have volunteered to help assist with the testing process.   To become a Pet Partner requires time, commitment, and an animal with the right temperament, training and social skills.  A number of different types of species can qualify to become a Pet Partner such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, cats, domesticated mice and others.  You must be 10 years of age.  There is a study manual as well as a test the handler and animal must pass.  An examiner, approved by The Delta Society (www.deltasociety.org), comes to Rome from Marietta and does testing and screening for us in Daniel Hall.  The animals must have social graces and not mind being touched and held.  They also must respond appropriately to medical equipment and sights and sounds they may encounter in public environments.    Another service soon to be provided by Compassionate Paws is the R.E.A.D. program.  To become a Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D./cat, etc.), the same qualifications are needed but the animal must also be receptive to children.  Not all Pet Partners fit into this category because not all animals are children‐oriented.  They must be certified by the Delta Society as Pet Partners and then go through the training required by Compassionate Paws to become a R.E.A.D. team.  The R.E.A.D. program originated in Salt Lake City and was designed for children with literacy problems.  It has since expanded to include children with and without reading difficulties. Our organization has established itself well in the healthcare areas. The cutting edge for growth is developing the R.E.A.D. program in our area.    Many thanks to St. Peter’s for offering the space, the electricity, and the comfort for our volunteers to meet and to have our examinations several times a year.  St. Peter’s gives to the community in ways we often do not know.  The outreach and benefits extend beyond our church borders touching the lives of people disconnected from nature and animals.   The following are stories shared from the Fall 2008 issue of Interactions magazine, which is a publication of The Delta Society:

“D’Ann Downey and her 8 year old black Schnauzer, Ayla, visited Winthrop Court Assisted Living and brought music to their ears.  Ordinarily Ayla is quite the “talker.”  She began “talking” to one of the residents during the visit and the person began speaking back to her in dog sounds.  Of course, that turned Ayla on and she was off and “singing.”  Other residents began to chime in making dogs sounds and before you knew it we had a chorus going.  It was a sight to behold and hear. Residents were laughing and delighting in her and each other. It was truly a joyous occasion.  There is joy in community and presence!!!  Animals so powerfully invite us into the present moment!  Where else can LIFE be?   While Ayla is quite the “talker,” Sawdust, Linda Blankenship’s 2 year old Maltese, is quite the little “ball player.”  During a late afternoon visit to Winthrop Court Assisted Living an elderly gentleman mentioned that he had five dogs as a child.  Linda pulled out Sawdust’s favorite toy, a ball, and asked the man if he would like to play ball with Sawdust. The smile on the man’s face matched the one on Sawdust’s.  As the game went back and forth the ladies watching laughed and cheered every catch and the gentleman was heard saying over and over “I love this, I love this.”  How wonderful it is that a little white dog can bring so much happiness.”

If you are interested in being involved in Compassionate Paws, you would be most welcome.  Or, if you would like to be the recipient of our services, please let us know.  We have plenty of opportunities for involvement, even if you do not have an animal or are not a Pet Partner.  We do not need large sums of money to operate but we do need funds for insurance for the Board, publicity, printing, etc.  Please think of us if you would like to give a memorial or honorarium for a dog, cat or person.  We have an office located at 2501 Callier Springs Road, Rome, GA 30161.  Contact D’Ann Downey 706 295‐2498 [email protected] or Linda Blankenship 706 232‐4917.

As many of you may know, a new Ice Machine for Daniel Hall was recently purchased at a cost of $1,980.  This is an essential element for St. Peter's ministry on Sunday mornings, Wednesday night suppers, and for the soup kitchen.  Since the ice machine purchase was not in the 2008 budget, the vestry would like to add it to the wish list.  This list includes items not budgeted for, but much needed.  If any parishioner would like to contribute to the cost of the ice machine, just write Wish List on the for line on a check and send it to the office.

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday November 9, 2008  at 9:30 a.m. in Daniel Hall.  Four new vestry members will be elected at this time to replace the four retiring members.  Please remember that the Canons of the Episcopal Diocese  of Atlanta DO NOT permit absentee ballots.    Parish bylaws require that there be at least two nominees for each vacant position. Last year, more than forty names were submitted to the Nominating Committee and all would have made good vestry members. Once the Committee has a complete list of names, and is assured that each potential nominee meets the qualifications, the Committee then prayerfully selects a slate of candidates that tries to continue a balance of gender, skills, age and length of time at St. Peter’s.    Bylaws also require that people at the Annual Meeting have an opportunity to make additional nominations from the floor. If you intend to do this, please consult the Rector or the Parish Administrator no later than the Wednesday before the Annual Meeting so that canonical qualifications can be checked in the Parish records.   If you have potential nominees to suggest, please contact a member of the Vestry Nominating Committee before October 6.  The members of the Nominating Committee are: David Carlton, David Harvey III, Cheryl Ranwez and Keith Summerlin.   “…Those qualified for election to the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows: Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant at the services of the Church in the year preceding election, and known by the Treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election….   …Those qualified to continue to hold the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows: Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is a regular attendant at the services of the church during such term and known by the Treasurer to have timely made and faithfully fulfilled, in accordance with its tenure, a stated financial commitment for church support at all times during such term.“
