XTS Series Mechanical InstructionsThis supplement is designed to address the specifics of the XTS Series - See page 12 for specific product features.

Product Summary

XTS Series heaters are available from 20 to 60 foot, 50,000 to 175,000 BTU’s, natural or LP gas. XTS Series are positivepressure, single stage heaters and feature hot rolled blackened steel for it’s radiant pipes.

Specific Mechanical Instructions

Be sure to identify the aluminized or titanium (150, 175) combustion chamber and place as the first tube section.Do not use the hot rolled steel radiant tubing as the first tube (combustion chamber).Note: Welded seam must be positioned downward.

175,000 BTU/H Models must be installed with a stainless steel tube clamp at the second joint of the exchanger between thefirst and second radiant tubes.

Note baffle quantities for your model and place baffles in the last tubes (farthest from the burner) as shown below and on pages13-14 of the generic manual.

Theory of OperationElectrical Requirements

♦ 120 Volt - 60 HZ♦ Starting Current 4.8 Amps♦ Running Current 1.1 Amps

Gas Requirements

♦ Manifold Pressure • Nat. 3.5’’ • LP. 10.0’’♦ Minimum Inlet Pressure • Nat. 5.0’’ • LP. 11.0’’♦ Maximum Inlet • Nat. 14.0’’ • LP. 14.0’’

Ventilation Requirements

♦ Consult the generic supplement for venting instructionsand unvented operation.

♦ For unvented operation, there must be a positive airdisplacement of at least 4.0 CFM per 1000 BTU/H fornatural gas or 4.5 CFM per 1000 BTU/H for LP gas. WVE-4 termination cap must also be used.

♦ Maximum vent length for all models is 20 ft.

Approved & Required Vent Caps

Sidewall Single♦ 4’’ Duravent sidewall vent kit (4-DSK).♦ 4’’ Vent terminal (SWD-4).

Sidewall Dual (Sharing common t-stat)♦ 6’’ Duravent sidewall vent kit (6-DSK).♦ 6’’ Vent terminal (SWD-6).

Roof Single♦ Approved 4’’ rooftop raincap (RVC-4).

Roof Dual (Sharing common t-stat)♦ Approved 6’’ rooftop raincap (RVC-6).

Important: Do not use sidewall caps for roof venting and donot use roof caps for sidewall venting.

· Starting Circuit

When voltage is applied to L1 and L2 (see diagramon right), a circuit is completed from L1 via theblower motor to L2. The blower fan is mounted inthe control box and rated to supply sufficient air forcombustion.

Air pressure generated by the blower will causethe normally open burner pressure switch No. 1 toclose. Another circuit is completed from L1 to thehot surface ignition control and back to L2. Thereis a five second delay, then the glo-bar is powered. After the glo-bar has been powered for 45seconds, the control causes the gas valve to openand initiates the ignition trial.

Power to the glo-bar is shut off during the last twoor three seconds of the ignition trial.

· Running Circuit

After ignition, the flame rod monitors the flame. Aslong as a flame is present, the valve is held open.If the flame is lost, the control acts to close the valvewithin one second, and a new trial sequenceidentical to that at start-up is initiated. If proof offlame is not established within 8.5 seconds, theunit will lock out. If lockout occurs, the control canbe reset by briefly interrupting the power source.

YESTemporarily place jumpers across

both pressure switches andcheck for 120V going from switch

to circuit board. (Be sure toreinstall the cover.) Is there 120V

entering the circuit board?

After ignitor iswarmed up, does gas

valve open?

YES

NO

Test for 120V at valveduring valve openingperiod (usually 30-45

seconds after power tothe heater). Is there

120V to valve?

NOPossibly, the circuit boardand/or wiring harness isfaulty. These should be

replaced.

Check to make sure gas pressure iswithin minimum and maximum inputs,as indicated on AGA burner rating

label. Is gas pressure OK?

YES

Correctproblem.

NO

Replacegas valve.

YES

YES

Does the burnerlight?

NO Is the gas cock inan ON position?

YESCheck to make sure gas pressure is

within minimum and maximum inputs,as indicated on AGA burner rating

label. Is gas pressure OK?

Correctproblem.

NO

Make sure gas lines werepurged of air.

YESYES

Does the burnerstay on?

NO Does the burner stay on forapprox. 8 seconds and then

shut off?

YES Is the heater properly grounded? Is the heater’s polarity correct?

YES With voltmeter, check DCvoltage at flame rod. Is it greater

than 30 Volts DC?

YES

Check to make sureflame sensor wire isOK and then replace

circuit board.

NO

Sensing rod is faulty or flame isweak. Check to make sure heater

is operating at proper gaspressure as indicated on AGA

burner rating label and thenreplace sensing rod if needed.

NO

Correct problem.

NO

Does the burnercome on and then

turn off immediately(1 or 2 seconds).

YES

Check to make sure that the pressure iswithin minimum and maximum inputs asindicated on the AGA burner ratinglabel. Is gas pressure OK?

Correctproblem.

NO

Exhaust pressureswitch may be

faulty or there is arestriction in the

exhaust.

YES

YES

NO

The following can cause theheater to shut down:

* Improper grounding* High winds

* Taking combustion air fromthe attic

* Dirty environment* Baffle not located properly* Fluctuating gas pressure

Does heater stay onuntil call for heat ends?

YES

Troubleshooting ends.

*WARNING: By-passing any switch isfor testing purposes only. Do not leaveswitch by-passed during normal opera-tion or heater’s built-in safety mecha-nisms will be compromised.
