Extended Time Simulation XTS Module While steady-state analysis answers many design and operating simulation questions, some questions simply cannot be answered without knowing how critical parameters vary over time. The AFT Fathom XTS module extends your piping system modeling capa- bilities into the fourth dimension of time by performing a series of steady-state solutions with variables changing automatically through time to achieve a dynamic simula- tion of your system. For example, the XTS module allows the user to define the geome- try of a tank which is used to determine liq- uid level changes with time. More than simply calculating time varying values, the XTS module lets you define a wide range of actions to occur during the time simulation, including: Pump start/stop and speed variation Valve position changes Control valve setpoint variation Extended System Modeling for AFT Fathom 7.0 Extensive text and graphical output clearly displays time varying parameters such as liquid height in tanks, flow and pressure in pipes, pump operating conditions, valve position and more. Graph Results now includes a unique animation feature that dynam- ically displays time varying parameters along selected flow paths. Whether you're designing a new system, a modification to an existing system or evalu- ating operating scenarios, when time varying performance is important to your project, you'll find the XTS module uniquely suited to your requirements. Extended Time SimulationXTS Module

While steady-state analysis answers manydesign and operating simulation questions, some questions simply cannot be answeredwithout knowing how critical parametersvary over time. The AFT Fathom XTS moduleextends your piping system modeling capa-bilities into the fourth dimension of time byperforming a series of steady-state solutionswith variables changing automaticallythrough time to achieve a dynamic simula-tion of your system. For example, the XTSmodule allows the user to define the geome-try of a tank which is used to determine liq-uid level changes with time.

More than simply calculating time varyingvalues, the XTS module lets you define awide range of actions to occur during thetime simulation, including:

Pump start/stop and speed variation Valve position changes Control valve setpoint variation

Extended System Modeling for AFT Fathom 7.0

Extensive text and graphical output clearly displays time varying parameters such asliquid height in tanks, flow and pressure in pipes, pump operating conditions, valveposition and more. Graph Results now includes a unique animation feature that dynam-ically displays time varying parameters along selected flow paths.

Whether you're designing a new system, a modification to an existing system or evalu-ating operating scenarios, when time varying performance is important to your project, you'll find the XTS module uniquely suited to your requirements.

  • Goal Seek & ControlGSC ModuleOne of the powerful benefits ofsystem modeling is the what-ifpotential, the ability to quicklyevaluate the effects of changingsystem parameters. The AFTFathom GSC module automatesthis process for piping systemsso that it requires much lesstime than traditional, manualiterative analyses. To determinewhat valve open percent willachieve a target flow is as easyas choosing the valve loss valueas a variable and specifying thedesired flowrate as a goal.

That's only the beginning, asthe GSC module's sophisticatedgoal seeking engine allows youto define multiple variables andgoals at multiple locationsthroughout the system. A goalcan be single point, differentialor sum. The GSC moduleanswers questions such as:what pump speed will achieve aspecified total flow to multiple, remote tanks or what position-ing of multiple valves will yielda desired differential supplypressure between pieces ofequipment in your system. Thepossibilities are almost endlessand raise the productivity ofyour system modeling to new levels.

Modeling parameters that maybe used as variables or goalsinclude:

    Pumpsspeed, flow, headrise, impeller diameter

    Valvesopen percent, Cv/K,deltaP, flow

    Reservoirsliquid level, temperature

    Control valvessetpoint,open percent

    Orificediameter, area Heat exchangersheat rate,

temperatures, area, U value Spray dischargearea, K

    value, exit pressure

Cost EstimationCST ModuleMost of the cost of the typicalpiping or ducting system is fixedin the initial stages of designwhere system sizing is deter-mined. Traditional methodsimpose too much distancebetween this design stage andcost determination, obscuringthe impact of design decisionson system costs. By calculatingsystem costs, the AFT FathomCST module lets you tightlyintegrate your design and costestimating process, eliminatingthe barriers to development ofcost effective designs. In con-junction with AFT Fathom'senergy cost calculation capabili-ties, the impact of design deci-sions on both fixed and lifecycle costs are clearly shown.

The CST module provides a flex-ible means of defining systemcomponent and piping costs indatabases that may beaccessed by your AFT Fathommodel. In addition to the tradi-tional hydraulic information, output now also contains thetotal cost and a cost breakdownby component. The CST moduledatabases provide the freedomto arrange your cost data as you want, whether it be by

component type, equipmentcategory, project or almost anyarrangement that fits yourneeds.

Database Manager lets you easily move data between data-bases, create new databasesand manage the data used inyour system model.

If you're serious about developing cost effectivedesigns, you need the tight integration between yourdesign and its cost provided bythe CST module.
