When I adopted my bea-gle, Roman, he was, espe-cially for a beagle, incredi-bly quiet.

Beagles are famous forbarking, baying and howl-ing; its their job. They wereevidently bred over the cen-turies for the express pur-pose of rendering everynearby creature simultane-ously desperate to flee andprofoundly deaf.

But Roman didnt bark.He was sweet and quiet. Hewhimpered at other dogswhen he wanted to meetthem, and at his housemate,Milo the cat. Milos answerswere always unprintable ina family newspaper. He re-ally knows how to makemeow a four-letter word.

Then, suddenly, Romanfound his bark. He found hisbay. And he found he needsto share them with theneighbors and me beforedawn every morning whensomeone slams a door. Dontget me wrong; I agree thatpredawn door-slamming isdeplorable behavior. Its justthat without Romans soundcannon of a bay, I mightsleep through it.

Instead, I am launchedlike a confused, bed-hairedmissile into the headboard, while Milo punctures somesoft part of me as his power-ful legs fire him straight upand away from the dog like apilots ejector seat.

This tends to make me an-gry. So I yell at Roman. I yellat him to NO BARK. I yellBAD DOG. I yell manyother things that can best be

summed up with MEOW!Roman continues to bark

and growl at the door, or theceiling fan or a car with abad muffler somewhere onEast Ohio Street itsfrankly hard to tell. Hedoesnt seem to know or carethat Im mad.

But I may be wrong aboutthat. New research showsthat dogs can tell the differ-ence between a happy hu-man face and an angry one.

Dogs have been hangingout with us for somethinglike 10,000 years, and our re-lationship with them isunique in many ways. While the dog has picked uponly a smattering of lan-guage (treat, food, park and cookie), it isthe only other animal onEarth that attends to hu-man communication bylooking at the right eye. Wedo that with each other.Dogs also are more likely tounderstand what pointingmeans. Other animals justthink its rude.

Through a complicatedseries of training tasks andexperiments with 20 dogsand images of human faces, the researchers determinedthat the dogs differentiatebetween the face of a happyperson and the face of some-one whos just discoveredhes being charged for Show-time without ever having or-dered it.

This research was con-ducted in Vienna, at theMesserli Research Insti-tutes Clever Dog Lab, a realplace I wish I worked in.

Wouldnt you want to workat the Clever Dog Lab?Doesnt it seem like a lot ofplaces youve worked inshould have been called theDull Human Lab or the Un-imaginative Biped Office?

Proving that dogs can re-liably tell the difference be-tween happy and angry hu-man faces theyve neverseen before doesnt exactlyprove, of course, that theyunderstand what those fa-cial expressions mean. Butone of the researchers toldBBC News that the dogstrained to touch their nosesto a picture of an angry hu-man face and not to a happyone took three times as longto learn the task as dogstrained to touch a happyface.

It seems they dont liketo touch an angry face, hesaid. & maybe they reallyunderstand an angry face tobe something they dontlike.

Maybe Roman knows hisbarking makes me angry, but its more important toscare off whoever is slam-ming doors.

Nobodys ever shown theslightest inclination to comeupstairs and attack us in oursleep, but maybe that justproves the barking is work-ing.

Still, I wish he would letme sleep in peace and skipthe earsplitting commotion.

I mean, MEOW.

The Mon Yough Commu-nity Singers are looking fornew voices for the choralgroup.

The singers are directedby Benjamin Filippone, 35,of Monroeville, a vocalteacher, performer andchoir director. He is a mem-ber of the Bach Choir ofPittsburgh and the Pitts-burgh Camerata.

The group held an openhouse from 7 to 9 p.m. Sun-day during its weekly prac-tice at Sampson Mills Pres-byterian Church in WhiteOak.

Mr. Filippone said allvoice parts are welcome, but the group is particularlyin need of mens vocal parts, including tenor and bass.

Under his direction since2009, the 28-member groupplaced first in the 2014 Saen-gerfest Competition in Leb-anon, in south CentralPennsylvania, winning themens and womens a cap-pella pieces. Saengerfest is ayearly, statewide choral fes-tival and competition.

The group has reallycome a long way. They are avery capable group with alot of strong talent. We do awide variety of music; a lotof it is a cappella and someof it is very challenging, ineight parts or more, Mr.Filippone said.

He said the organizationis in the process of changingits name to the Mon YoughChorale to better reflect itsability.

The group has a broadmix of singing accomplish-ment and ability level, andnot all members have priormusical training, Mr. Filip-pone said.

We are trying to reachout to music teachers in thearea and church musiciansand are hoping to attract afew more people like that,Mr. Filippone said.

At this time the groupdoesnt hold auditions butinvites anyone who is inter-ested to come to a practice.

Its a special mix of peo-ple, Mr. Filippone said. Ivenever worked with a groupwhere the friendship andbonds were so strong andwarm. Its one of the mostenjoyable choirs Ive everworked with.

The performers supportthe director through yearlydues and fundraisingevents.

Donna Dineen of Irwinjoined the singers in 1966shortly after high school. Atthe time, the group wasknown as the McKeesportChoraliers but changed itsname when it merged withthe White Oak CommunitySingers in 2000.

She took a break whenher children were born butreturned to the group assoon as she was able. Fivemembers from the originalChoraliers are still a part ofthe Community Singers.

Mrs. Dineen said some ofher favorite pieces to per-form are the familiar onessuch as show tunes and pa-triotic pieces.

For the spring, the themefor performance is traveland each piece is related tothat theme either metaphor-ically or literally, Mr. Filip-pone said.

The lineup for the springconcert includes JamaicanMarketplace, an a cappellapiece; a chorale arrange-ment of Famine Song, which tells the story of bas-ket weavers amid the fam-ine in Sudan; a spiritualpiece called Ride the Char-iot; Prayer from OuterSpace, whose words werewritten by an astronaut;and I Hear America Sing-ing, a Walt Whitman poemthat will bring the programback home to America.

The group performs itsspring and winter concertsat Sampson PresbyterianChurch and performs dur-ing Light Up Night in WhiteOak. The number of addi-tional performances varies, depending on invitationsfrom other organizations.

Classic gymgets face-lift

By Deana Carpenter

Although newly reno-vated, McKeesport AreaSchool Districts NeenieCampbell Gymnasium re-tains its nostalgic charm.

Its a classic old gym,McKeesport Area assistantsuperintendent Harry Bau-man said as he walkedaround the space.

The facility was built inthe 1940s and later namedfor the late Coach CorneliusNeenie Campbell,McKeesport Area HighSchools all-time leader inwins in boys basketball.

In his tenure as headcoach of the team from 1943to 1966, he racked up 398wins and 10 section champi-onships. Under his leader-ship, the team won a WPIALand state championship in1955.

The gym and its adjacentlocker rooms underwent anextensive face-lift over theperiod of about a year.

The project was part of a$14.5 million addition andrenovation to Founders HallMiddle School, where thegym is located. It is the maingymnasium for McKeesportArea School District andhome court to the highschool teams.

The gym reopened inDecember.

Among replacementsduring the renovation werethe gym floor and bleachersand some wall coverings. When collapsed, the bleach-ers spell out Tigers, for theMcKeesport Area HighSchool mascot. When ex-tended, theres room formore than 1,000 spectators.

The court is even biggerthan a standard size highschool gym, Mr. Bauman

said.The college-size gym floor

is one of the largest in areahigh schools. Years ago, col-lege and university basket-ball teams used the court.

New boys and girls lockerrooms for home and visitingteams were added. Addi-tional office space, trainingrooms, storage, laundry andteam meeting space wasalso included in the renova-tion.

Blue and red panels hangfrom the ceiling and walls tobuffer sound. Mr. Baumansaid the panels were all thatwas needed to improve theacoustics of the gym, so thesound system did not needto be replaced.

Mr. Bauman said he likesthat the gym retained its fa-miliar feel.

Not many gyms in theWPIAL have that great feelto it, he said. He said newergymnasiums have fans sit-ting nearly up to the ceiling, but not at the Neenie Camp-bell Gymnasium.

Youre never more than15 feet away from the court. Its a nice feeling, he said.

Quest Realty Partnership, which operates the centerand other facilities there.

A recently formed citi-zens group, Protect PT, hascalled for a 2,000-foot setback

in the township, citing re-search suggesting a host ofenvironmental and healthrisks related to fracking op-erations. It also cites the pos-sibility of a decrease in prop-erty values.

The state requires at leasta 500-foot setback from build-ings and private water wells. But other municipalities inthe region have put in placelarger ones, including a 750-foot setback in Peters.

Residents who live nearnatural gas extraction pro-cesses face the possibility ofexposure to harmful chemi-cals, Ryan Grode, an envi-ronmental health educatorwith the Southwest Pennsyl-vania EnvironmentalHealth Project, told commis-sioners at a packed specialmeeting earlier this month.

The meeting lasted threehours and included a widerange of comment fromabout three dozen speakers. The nonprofit is conductingstudies to determinewhether there is a direct cor-relation between the prox-imity of fracking operationsand health effects.

For many farmers aroundthe region, fracking couldhelp lift their fortunes.

Were trying to hang on,said township resident LynnYoung, who owns about 175acres of farmland near Har-rison City. Farming is not aviable occupation any-more.

Mr. Youngs family hasowned the farm for genera-tions. But Mr. Young, whohas signed a few leases in-volving horizontal wells withanother drilling company,Huntley & Huntley, saidmore and more farms arewinding up in the hands ofdevelopers as a result of fi-nancial conditions. The pros-pect of signing drilling leasesis considered a more favor-able alternative, he said.

As for concerns about en-vironmental and healthrisks, Mr. Young said oppo-sition to fracking is largelybased on fears, ratherthan definitive scientific evi-dence.

Apex has yet to receive ap-proval from the state Depart-ment of Environmental Pro-tection to start drilling at thesite.

But while it has receivedstate permits for two othersites in the township in-cluding one in its LevelGreen area, which is lessthan 2,000 feet from a Traf-ford subdivision it in-tends to comply with thetownship permitting pro-cess, said Mark Rothenberg, the companys chief execu-tive. He said the site, whichis zoned for industrial use, isthe most conducive to frack-ing.

We want to be goodneighbors, he said.

But Mr. Rothenbergadded that his companycould begin operations im-mediately after receiving astate permit, even withoutthe townships permission.

We do have businessconstraints, Mr. Rothen-berg said. We just cant waitforever.

Township officials, fortheir part, are trying to bal-ance concerns with accom-modating an industry thatpays significant dividends. In 2014 alone, the townshipreceived about $50,000 in feespaid by drilling companiesfor digging wells. Requiredunder the states MarcellusShale gas drilling law, Act13, those fees have gone to-ward infrastructure im-provements.

But they have sought toemphasize that before theypassed the proposed zoninglaws in October, the town-ship had no fracking restric-tions of its own.

We wanted to safeguardourselves, Mr. Grazianisaid.

But even when the town-ship does adopt the proposedrules, perhaps as soon asApril, they are subject tochange.

Its not in stone, Mr.Graziani said.

Wilkinsburg School Dis-trict is undertaking a $10million project to providecomplete upgrades to itsTurner and Kelly elemen-tary schools.

The district has about $6.3million in a capital improve-ments fund from a bond is-sue for the projects. Theboard is looking to take outan additional $3.5 million to$4 million loan in addition tothe bond to cover the entirecost of the renovations.

The board is submittingthe first of a series of docu-ments outlining the renova-tion plans to the stateDepartment of Education inhopes of receiving state re-imbursement under thePlanning and ConstructionWorkbook, also known asPlanCon.

It wouldnt be possiblefor us to complete this proj-ect without those reimburse-ments, so were really hop-

ing they come through, business manager Phil Mar-tell said.

Turner, built in 1936,needs the most extensive re-pairs, acting superintendentDan Matsook said. It is thefirst building slated for reno-vation, including new win-dows; improved heating, ventilation and air-condi-tioning systems; upgradedsecurity systems; and im-proved handicapped acces-sibility. Work is scheduledto begin in September andexpected to be finished byAugust 2016.

Renovations to Kelly, which was built in 1969, areslated to run from May 2016into September 2016. Neitherbuilding has seen an up-grade since the 1990s, Mr.Matsook said.

District officials are plan-ning to host a series of com-munity meetings at Turnerand Kelly this spring to pro-vide detailed plans of the ren-ovations to parents and otherdistrict residents, board Pres-

ident Ed Donovan said. With the entire bond issue

being used for the elemen-tary buildings, the districtwill have to set aside futurefunds to provide touch-upsto the high school, Mr. Mat-sook said. No extensive ren-ovations are scheduled forthe 7-12 middle and highschool building on WallaceAvenue. Built in 1910, it isthe oldest of the districtscurrent schools.

"When you do renova-tions, its a 30-year decision,Mr. Matsook said. We re-ally want to do it right andgive our kids the same state-of-the-art technology and fa-cilities that any other stu-dent in Allegheny Countywould have."

The board is planning a se-ries of visits to buildings inother area school districts thatrecently underwent construc-tion or extensive renovations, including Penn Hills, whichopened a new K-6 elementarycenter in August.

We need to go out and

look at not just new con-struction, but to look atbuildings like ours oldbuildings that were reno-vated and talk to teacherswho use those rooms, Mr.Donovan said. To better un-derstand what our archi-

tects and teachers are tellingus they want to do, I thinkwe need to go see it.

Board director RichardBradford estimated the dis-trict hasnt invested signifi-cant money in buildingssince Kelly was built.

Weve done repairs, butnot serious investments,Mr. Donovan said.
