company background

tpc (technology and production center switzerland AG) is a subsidiary of the Swiss state broadcaster SRG SSR, based in Zurich. SRG has seven television channels, 18 radio stations and complementary websites. Its SRF subsidiary has around 2000 employees and broadcasts across three television channels, SRF 1, SRF2 and SRF Info, six radio stations and produces content for its website and teletext operations. tpc is the technical service provider for SRF, responsible for the production and technical aspects relating to TV, radio and multimedia requirements of SRF.

tpc’s requirements

SRG SSR subsidiary tpc and its sister operations have recently installed Sony Sonaps for sports production and use Sony XDCAM HD/EX for acquisition.

As well as producing daily TV sports shows and two weekly TV sports shows, the SRF production operation covers live sports events and also creates extensive online content. The smooth workflows need to be maintained, even when shooting in remote and challenging conditions, such as the broadcaster’s coverage of events in the extensive mountainous areas of Switzerland.

tpc had used the XPRI editing system in its previous standard definition form and needed to upgrade as part of its organisation-wide migration to HD.

why Sony was selected

With Sony Sonaps installed, allowing journalists to access and edit content themselves using existing newsroom systems, the XpriNS Team editing software provides a state-of-the-art workflow solution.

With the challenge of editing in remote mountainous areas, the non linear editor could support a lightweight editing system, while maintaining the highest quality output.

The XpriNS Team meant minimal training, with a familiar GUI , while delivering significant advantages.

tpc works closely with Sony and wherever possible it is looking to optimise the systems that it currently uses. The XpriNS Team is designed primarily for use in news, magazine and sport operations; tpc operates in all of these areas.

“The XpriNS Team gives us the chance to use the SONAPS system in smaller operations where we don’t have the enough space or power to install a big system.”

Sandro Furter, Project Manager, tpc, SRF.

the Sony solution

As a non-linear editor designed primarily for use in news, magazine and sport applications, XpriNS Team made perfect sense for the tpc operation. Working as part of its Sonaps installation, it integrated perfectly with the broadcaster’s chosen XDCAM HD/EX acquisition. It has given operators the flexibility of editing full resolution or proxy AV XDCAM content, with exceptional handling, manipulation and integration.

Earlier this year, tpc used XpriNS Team to edit on location for Switzerland’s biggest skiing event, the Ski World Cup in Wengen for the Lauberhorn downhill race. The non linear editor allowed a small team of two editors and a supervisor to use the system high up in the mountains. The XpriNS Team supported a compact system, so that the whole set-up could be easily transported in a helicopter to the location.

Using live and pre-recorded feeds, they used two work stations for ingest and two for editing while recording. Together they produced highlights from the event across four days. There was a two-hour turn around before the package was ready to send for broadcast on SRF2 in the evening.

Similarly, a small tpc SRF team followed presenter Sabine Dahinden to the Alps with a lightweight kit, supported by XPRI, to record Dahinden on the Mountain, as she cut herself off from the modern world to recreate life as it would have been 100 years ago.

One of the most important features of the XpriNS Team for tpc SRF is the teaming feature which allows for material to be shared across workstations on one network and allowing editing while recording. With several operators able to link to a single network, the editing process is far quicker and more efficient.

XpriNS Team has also inherited XPRI’s familiar user interface and core technology, so the tpc operators, used to its predecessor, have had no trouble in adapting to using the new system. The XpriNS Team is easy-to-use, very stable and highly responsive.

The SRF journalists and editors have taken advantage of the customizable GUI, personalizing each workstation equipped with XPINS. Working in HD, they are able to edit on proxy or high resolution content, which makes for a seamless workflow.

the next steps

tpc’s first productions using the XpriNS Team’s teaming functionality have proved a success, with the non-linear editing system coming into its own and providing significant benefits.

The broadcaster is working continuously with Sony to optimise the production solutions that it has already installed and to introduce new technology that can increase production efficient, while maintaining quality.

“For me the most important feature was the teaming feature where we can grade the whole production from three stations to one network.”

Sandro Furter, Project manager, tpc, SRF.
