It states that more than half of the countries in the region have achieved a better ranking this year than last. This significant growth owes to, amongst other factors, high international demand for local raw materials, especially from China and other Asian countries, together with sound macroeconomic management in most Latin American Countries. This recent publication has bought these significant local advances to the fore. Chile remains the most competitive country in Latin America thanks to its sound macroeconomics and low levels of debt. Panama finds itself in a similar position, with significant improvements in education. Other Latin American nations such as Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru have also shown improvements thanks to sound macroeconomic management, continued economic growth, investment in infrastructure and lower poverty rates. In total, 10 of Latin America’s 19 economies have registered improvements in their levels of competitiveness; significant improvements in some cases such as Ecuador which leapt 15 places up the chart, along with Panama that went up nine and Nicaragua seven. Challenges The report also detailed the challenges still facing Latin America if it is to maintain its position as a leading region, a position it has enjoyed for this past decade. These challenges are mostly to be found in infrastructure, the strength of its institutions and the quality of education. The forum reported that at this stage, Latin America must boost its competitiveness by increasing each country’s output, and thus ensure the sustainability of the significant improvements achieved to date. The XLVI Annual Felaban Assembly, Lima 2012, will provide without doubt, an excellent opportunity to appreciate the strengths and expectations of Latin America’s economies.
