LOOKING FOR OPENING NIGHT SUCCESS AGAIN: Xavier has won 24 straight regular season openers (23 at home and one on the road) with its last loss in an opener coming in the 1989-90 “Sweet 16” season toSouthernUtahStateatCincinnatiGar-dens (97-90 on December 2, 1989). South-ern Utah State is a member of the Big Sky Conference along with Northern Arizona, this season’s opponent for the regular season opener. Xavier has won all 14 of its season openers at Cintas Center, includ-ingan83-59winoverGardner-Webblastseason (11-8-13).
FOR THE RECORD (NORTHERN ARIZONA): This is also the regular season opener for Northern Arizona, who beat California Baptist87-82inexhibitionplayonOct.29.

Head coach Chris Mack welcomes back sixscholarshipletterwinnersfromthe2013-14 team that made its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in nine years. Mack, who signed a contract extension intheoffseasonthroughthe2019-20season, also welcomes a talented group ofsevennewcomersthatincludesasix-memberfreshmanrecruitingclassrankedinthetop20inthenation.
EXHIBITION OPENER: Xaviermen’sbas-ketball team topped Northwood, 102-68, this past Saturday in the Musketeers’ only public tune-up before opening the 2014-15 season. The Musketeers used balanced scoring to break the century mark, with fiveMusketeersscoringindoubledigits:MattStainbrook (16), Jalen Reynolds (15), Trevon Bluiett (14), Sean O’Mara (14) and Myles Davis (10). XU led 31-27 withundersixminutesleftinthefirsthalfbut went on a 16-5 run to end the half and a 4-0 run to start the second half and open up a 51-32 lead.
A HEAD START IN BRAZIL:Xavierplayedafour-gameexhibitiontourinBrazilinAugust. Sophomore Jalen Reynolds led Xavierinscoring(13.3ppg.),rebounding(10.8 rpg.), blocks (1.5 bpg.) and steals (1.5 spg.) for the four games. Freshman trevonBluiett was the team’s second-leadingscorer,averaging11.3ppg.togowith 1.8 apg.

PLENTy OF NEW FACES: Much of the excitement among Xavierfanssurroundsthesevennewfaces, including junior guard Remy Abell, whoiseligiblethisseasonaftertransfer-ringfromIndiana.Thenationally-rankedsix-memberfreshmanrecruitingclassin-cludesthree-timeIndianastatechampionandFirstTeamAll-StateselectionTrevon Bluiett,aforwardwhoaveraged35.7ppg. and 11.4 rpg. as a senior. FOXSports.comlistedBluiettandnewteammateJ.P. Macura among the top 10 shooters nationallyintheincomingfreshmanclass.BluiettisonthepreseasonSporting News All-Newcomer Team for the BIG EAST. Macura, a First Team All-State guard from Minnesota,averaged32.2ppg.and6.5rpg. as a senior while leading his team to astatetitle.larryAustinJr., a 6-2 guard from Illinois, was a unanimous First Team All-Stateselectionafteraveraging22.2points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.2 steals as a senior. Edmond Sumner, an explosivecomboguardandtwo-timeAll-StateselectionfromMichigan,averaged19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals per game as a senior. Sean O’Mara, a rugged forward and First Team All-StateselectionfromIllinois,averaged23 points and 13 rebounds for his senior season, while leading his team to a 25-8 record and a Class 4A State Runner-Up finish.Thesixthmemberofthisimpres-siveclassisversatileforwardMakindé London,whoisoriginallyfromNashville,
Tenn.,butwonaNationalChampionshipthispastyearplayingforMontverdeAcad-emy in Florida.
PRESEASON HyPE: Despite the young squad,Xavierhasearnedsomepreseasonnoticeamongmanyofthenationalmedia.USA TodayhasXavierranked39thinitspreseason countdown of the top teams and collegesportsmadness.com has XU ranked 40th. XU was picked fourth out of 10 teams in the BIG EAST Conference preseason coaches’ poll.
SENIORS LEAD THE RETURNEES: Senior center MattStainbrook and senior point guard Dee Davis are the returning start-ers from last season and will be relied on by Coach Mack as leaders of this year’s squad.Stainbrook,apreseason2014-15 First Team All-BIG EAST Conference selectionbytheleaguecoaches,ledXUinreboundingat7.4rpg.(fifthinBIGEAST)and was third in scoring at 10.6 ppg. Stain-brook is the leading returnee in scoring and rebounding for the Musketeers and theonlyreturningdouble-figurescorer.DavisledXavierandwassecondintheBIG EAST last season in assists at 4.7 apg. and is the team’s second-leading returning scorer at 7.7 ppg.

STAINBROOK EARNED A NATIONAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE HONOR ... NOMI-NATED FOR OTHERS THIS yEAR: MattStainbrook was named to the 10-member men’sbasketballDivisionI-AAAAthlet-icsDirectorsAssociationScholar-AthleteTeam as a junior. This year Stainbrook is a top candidate for The Senior ClASS Award, which was created as an acronym for CelebratingLoyaltyandAchievementforStayinginSchool;itisaprestigiousawardthat honors seniors who excel in the areas ofcommunityinvolvement,theclassroom,character/leadershipandcompetition.Stainbrook is also a 2014-15 Allstate Good Works Team Nominee.
STAINBROOK IS A 1,000-POINT SCORER: Senior MattStainbrook passed 1,000 col-legiate 1,000 collegiate points during the 2014BIGEASTTournamentQuarterfinalsvs.Marquetteandnowhas1,027careerpoints, including 676 points as a two-year starter at Western Michigan.
MACK PASSED 100 WINS: Xaviersixth-yearhead coach Chris Mack(Xavier‘92)is just thefourthcoachinXavierhistorytoreach100 wins. MackisnowfourthonXavier’sall-timewinslistforheadcoachesat111-57(.661)astheXavierheadcoach,includ-ingfourNCAATournamentsinhisfirstfiveseasons, two of which ended in the Sweet 16 (2012 and 2010).
TIES TO OTHER XAVIER COACHES WITH 100 WINS: Pete Gillen (202 wins in nine seasons: 1985-94), Skip Prosser(148winsinsevenseasons: 1994-2001) and Sean Miller (120 winsinfiveseasons:2004-09)arethethreecoaches ahead of current Chris Mack on the XU wins list. Mack played under Gillen and then-Gillen assistant Prosser at XU and heworkedonthestaffsofMilleratXUandProsser at both XU and Wake.
PLENTy OF SUCCESS AT CINTAS CENTER: Xavier,whichwas15-2inthe2013-14season(its14thseason)atitsbeautiful
on-campus home, has compiled a 188-27 (.874)recordatCintasCenter.Xavier’s15winsinthe2013-14seasontiedwiththe2009-10 team for the second-most wins in a season at Cintas Center. The school record is 16 wins in a 16-1 2007-08 home season at Cintas Center.
ANOTHER STANDING ROOM ONLy SELLOUT: Xavierdrewstandingroomonlycrowds for each of its last two home games ofthe2013-14season,March6vs.Villanova(10,340)andMarch1vs.Creighton(oncam-pus facility school record crowd of 10,483). ThesewerethefirsttwogamesXavierhaseversoldstandingroomonlyticketsforatCintas Center since the building opened for the2000-01season.Xavierhasnowsoldout117games(outof215all-timegamesatCintasCenter)includesevenselloutsinthe2013-14season(Villanova,Creighton,Butler,Georgetown,St.John’s,Providenceand Gardner-Webb).
OVER TWO MILLION FANS AND COUNTING AT CINTAS CENTER: Xavierhasaveraged10,015 fans for its 215 games played at the 10,250-seat Cintas Center since it opened for the 2000-01 season, while selling out 117 games so far. That’s 97.7% capacity of its 10,250 seats since the building opened. Xavierpassedthetwomillionmarkformen’s basketball fans at Cintas Center on Nov.12,2013,fortheTennesseegame.
NCAA TOURNAMENT TRADITION: Xavierhas made eight of the last nine NCAA Tournaments and 12 of the last 14. Only 13schoolshavebeentoatleasteightNCAA Tournaments in the last nine years: Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga, Michigan State andWisconsinareatnine,whileXavier,Texas,Pittsburgh,NorthCarolina,Villa-nova,Marquette,OhioStateandLouisvilleare at eight.
