AN HISTORIC church insouth Sefton was targeted bylow-life thieves who stole anentire pathway of valuablepaving stones.

The Yorkstone slabs werelaid at Sefton Parish Church,located in Sefton Village, nearMaghull.

The church is 850 years oldand the only Grade I listedbuilding in the entire bor-ough.

Church officials were leftshocked and appalled whenthey discovered that 45 largestones which formed a patharound the church building,

had been stolen. It is believedthe York slabs were takenovernight, but how they werelifted from the ground andtransported away remains amyster y.

Locals have speculated thatit was a planned theftinvolving at least two peoplewho would have needed alarge vehicle in order to placethe heavy stones in.

Coastguard called out tohelp - but woman wassearching for mussels!

THE COASTGUARD were called out tocheck on the safety of a person onCrosby beach after a concerned passer-by spotted her far out on the tide late atnight – but it turned out she wassearching for sea mussels!

HM Coastguard Crosby say they took thereport seriously because it was 9pm whendaylight was fading, the water was comingin and there was a build-up of mist.

The dangerous conditions on Tuesday,July 7 prompted a response from the emer-gency services unit, but when they reachedthe female she told them she was searchingfor sea mussels on the rocks.

A spokesperson said: “We were tasked toa report of a concern of safety to a memberof the public in the area of Crosby Leisurec e n t re .

“The report stated that a person was seenfar out on the tide line near to the outfallpipe. With daylight fading and a flooding

tide, not to mention a build up of mist inthe area at the time, the first informant wasquite right to call and ask for coastguard tocheck the welfare of the person.

“Once the team arrived on location theyliaised with Merseyside Police. Team mem-bers were then deployed to approach theperson and investigate that everything wasokay and ask if she required the teamsassistance.

“It turned out that the member of thepublic was actually looking for sea musselson the rocks. Safety advice was given outand it was agreed that it would be safer if

the person ceased her search and carry itout when it was safer conditions.”

Although it turned out to be a false alarm,the coastguard say anyone concerned overthe safety of members of the public on thebeach should always get in touch. Theyadded: “We actively encourage membersof the public to dial 999 and ask for theCoastguard if they see anything thatdoesn't look right whilst on our coastline.Time is of the essence to give us a betterchance of carrying out a successful rescue.This time thankfully it was a false alarmbut next time it might be more serious.”

MORE lockdown restrictions havebeen lifted to allow open-air gigs,festivals and theatre shows tore s u m e .

Beauticians, tattooists, spas,tanning salons and other close-contact services have also beenallowed to reopen, following agovernment announcement onThursday, July 9.

It will come as a much-neededboost for companies and staff inall of these industries aftermonths of lockdown.

However, not all forms of beautytreatment will be able to goahead, as some are deemed toohigh risk. These include face wax-ing, sugaring or threadingservices, facial treatments, make-up application and eyebrow treat-ments.

People have hit out at those responsible for thetheft on social media. One person fumed: “This isappalling. It must have taken them hours so surelysomeone would have heard something or noticedsomething going on?”

Another said: “I can’t believe anyone would wantto desecrate something that old and beautiful.Absolutely appalling.”

While another added: “That’s where I was mar-ried.

“This church is so old it’s listed in the doomsdaybook 1066. It’s tragic.”

Asa Murphy and his musi-cians put on the hour-and-a-half concert for around 200neighbours. He also streamedthe entire performance onFacebook Live, with more than11,000 people watching thegig.

The singer, who performs intheatres across the region andbeyond, decided to organisethe impromptu show, which hecalled ‘The Hope of the Rise’Concert, on Sunday (July 12)to raise money for St Joseph’sHospice after their charityshop in Walton was brokeninto last week.

Thieves ransacked the store,on Walton Vale, on Thursday,July 9 and stole items as wellas causing damage to thebuilding itself, meaning itsreopening had to be delayed.Hospice funds are havimg tobe used for repair work. Asatold the Champion: “I saw

what happened to the charityshop. I sing at an annual ballin aid of the hospice, so Iwanted to do something tohelp them.

“I contacted my band to seeif they would be willing to giveup their time for free and theyall said yes.

“We set-up the band in mydrive and put on show. All theneighbours really enjoyed -

and, socially distanced, had adance in the street!

“I set-up a JustGiving siteand people handed me moneyon the day. One man said hec o u l d n’t stay to watch but gaveme £20, which was brilliant.

“In total, we have raisedmore than £1,100 which willbe donated to the hospice sothanks to everyone whodonated.”

Crackdown on off-roadbikes used on cycle pathPOLICE have carriedout further searches ofa cycle path betweenOrmskirk and Maghullfollowing morereports of off-roadmotorbikes being usedby yobs.

The Championreported last monthhow three peoplewere arrested and astolen moped seizedby officers along theCheshire Lines path,which runs from PlexMoss Lane, in Orm-skirk, to Sefton Lane,in Maghull.

Since then, therehave been morereports of off-roadbikes being riddendangerously along thecycle path by youths.

Housing plan is deferredA DECISION on a plan to buildhouses on land owned by a Crosbyfootball club has been deferred bySefton Council.

The Champion has previouslyreported how Liverpool RamblersAFC, on Moor Lane, want to usetheir existing car park to build sixhouses despite concerns from loc-als over parking and traffic issues.

In a petition against the plans, italso claims that a restricted coven-ant is in place which stipulatesthat the land must be kept as openland for sports and recreationuse.

At a recent Planning Committeemeeting, Sefton Council deferredthe decision. In a report, the coun-

cil states: “The consideration ofthis application will be deferred toa future meeting to enable issuesto be addressed in relation to anti-social behaviour, gated communit-ies and to enable furtherconsultation to be undertakenwith the Sports Council, wardmembers and the parish council.”

Liverpool Ramblers want to cre-ate a new car park at the back oftheir grounds, which is currently adisused tennis court.

It was formerly Moor Park Ten-nis Club, but the site has attractedanti-social behaviour in recentyears and the Ramblers feel it willbenefit the community to get ridof the overgrown courts.

Bomb hoax callerwho threatened toblow up councilbuilding is jailed

A MAN who made a bombhoax call to a Sefton Counciloffice leading to theevacuation of 800 workers hasbeen jailed.

Jim Evans made two callsclaiming there was an ISIS bombplanted in the premises so thepolice were called and a majoremergency response put intoaction .

Evans, who is addicted tobutane gas, was quickly identi-fied as the culprit and whenarrested he admitted making thecalls.

The 22-year-old, from Bootle,had been due for sentence on anearlier occasion but had notagreed to attend a psychiatricconsultation .

Sentence was consequentlyadjourned until Friday, July 10and Judge Rachel Smith, whotook into account his mentalhealth issues, jailed him for 16months.

Liverpool Crown court heardhow Evans made two phonecalls on January 7 which resul-

ted in the mass evacuation ofstaff from the Sefton Councilbuilding on Trinity Road, inBootle.

Martyn Walsh, prosecuting,said that Evans phoned a councilemployee at the building, Mag-dalen House, and told her that areceptionist at the building "was

in ISIS and was going to blow upthe building.”

The council employee, whoknew Evans through her workwith the homeless, told Evansnot to say such things. After thecall she telephoned police.

Evans then phoned back andspoke to a different member ofstaff at the building andrepeated the bomb hoax. Thissecond call resulted in the evacu-ation of around 800 people,

Evans, of Sussex Close, Bootle,admitted communicating falseinformation about a bomb hoax.

The court heard that thedefendant has a criminal recordwith previous convictionsincluding damaging propertyand attacking police officers.

Paul Lewis, defending, saidthat the background to much ofhis recent offending was Evan’saddiction to butane gas.

He said that Evans had a“t ro u b l e d ” background and hadstruggled to find a regular sourceof income and said there weremedical issues.

Judge Smith urged Evans toseek help for his addiction tobutane gas and to try andchange his future behaviour.

Campaign launched for new roadto be built for 1,700 homes plan

MAGHULL Councillors are campaigning for ahaul road to be built as part of a proposedhousing development to build nearly 1,700homes, which they say will help expectedtraffic problems.

There are two separate plans for adjacent plotsacross School Lane and Poverty Lane – the firstbeing from Countryside Properties and Persim-mon Homes, who want to build 841 homes and a25-home older person’s residential scheme. Thesecond application, from East Maghull Consor-tium, is to build 855 homes along with an olderpeople’s housing scheme, a mixed-use centre andpublic park.

Sudell Ward Councillors Patrick McKinley andYvonne Sayers, as well as Park Ward CouncillorJohn Sayers, have described it as the ‘biggestissue facing the town for the next 15 years.’

They opposed the plan when it went to thePlanning Committee in January, which resultedin Sefton Council deferring the decision to a laterdate. They claim that the developments would

have ‘catastrophic consequences’ for pollutionlevels in the area and that a road is needed toease increased traffic.

They are now calling on residents to respond toa consultation currently being carried out byCountryside and Persimmon and choose ‘Option6’ so a road can be built to ease an expectedincrease in vehicles in the area.

Cllrs McKinley and Sayers said: “We cannotover-emphasise the importance of the residents’voice being heard on this matter. In January wespoke at the Planning Committee outlining ourconcerns as to why the current proposals shouldbe rejected.

“As a result, the developer was forced into pro-ducing a Construction Environment and TrafficManagement Plan, which is out for consultationat the moment.

“All we are asking for is to build a spine roadfrom the School Lane end to protect the com-munity ’s health and well-being.”

Cllr Yvonne Sayers believes that Option 6 in theconsultation is ‘the only option we can support.’

She said: “It would only take a willingness tobuild a haul road across the site. This way, trafficcould come off the motorway, enter and leave the

site with very little disruption elsewhere. If anyoptions are chosen where site traffic travels intoand through residential areas it will be cata-strophic and in one fell swoop destroy Sefton’saspiration to build a cleaner environment. What a

A new telephone booking line has been introduced atthe facility to “support and maintain the safe andeffective delivery of care for patients and staff” due toc o ro n a v i r u s .

Litherland Walk-in Centre now operates a telephonetriage and appointment system with no opportunityfor patients to ‘walk-in .’

As of Monday, July 13, patients will be able to book anappointment by contacting Litherland Walk-in Centredirect on their new number which is: 0151 475 4667.

By using the appointment system, patients will betriaged over the phone by an experienced walk-incentre clinician. If they need to be seen at the walk-incentre, an appointment will be allocated.

The Litherland Walk-in Centre telephone triage linewill operates every day, from 8am to 8pm.

Those who only have Covid-19 symptoms will be dir-ected to NHS 111. If you have Covid-19 symptoms andstill require walk-in centre treatment for another prob-lem, you will still be triaged and seen.

Over 75s will have to pay TV licencesPENSIONERS over 75 in Seftonand West Lancashire will have tostart paying for a TV licence afterthe controversial plan was con-firmed by the BBC.

It was revealed on Thursday,July 9 that free TV licences formost over 75s would bescrapped from August 1.

The proposal was first dis-cussed earlier this year, but therehas been a two-month delaybecause of the coronavirus pan-

demic. Some had hoped the BBCwould perform a U-turn in lightof the pandemic, but they arepressing ahead with the plan.

It means more than three mil-lion households will be asked tostart paying the £157.50 fee.

Only households wheresomeone receives the PensionCredit benefit will still be eligiblefor a free licence.

The BBC say the cost of con-tinuing to provide free licences

to all over-75s could havereached £1billion a year overtime with an ageing population,according to the corporation.

Free TV licences for the over-75s have been provided by thegovernment since 2000, butresponsibility for the provisionwas passed to the BBC as part ofits last licence fee settlement. TVLicensing will write to all licenceholders aged over 75 with clearguidance about how to pay.

Dad launches petitionto install crossing at‘d a n g e ro u s ’ junction

A DAD has launched a petitionfor a pedestrian crossing to beinstalled at “busy andd a n g e ro u s ” road junction inMaghull.

David Carroll, who lives inLydiate, wants a crossing at thejunction of Kenyons Lane andNorthway as he says all theother junctions on A59 toSwitch Island have a crossingyet this is the most dangerous.

The junction marks where thespeed limit on Northwaychanges from 60mph to 40mphin the Liverpool direction whileKenyons Lane, which traversesthe junction, has a speed limitof 20mph on both sides.

Mr Carroll says that as soon asthe light turns from red on oneset of lights, the others turngreen which doesn’t leaveenough time to cross the widedual carriageway.

People have to run across theroad to get out of the way oftraffic – including his two young

children, aged three and four.The family crosses the road

twice a day to go to school andback and they also cross theroad at the weekend to go tothe park nearby and localshops.

He also points out that thereare large housing estates onboth sides of Northway, as wellas children’s playgrounds, andtwo primary schools nearby.

Sefton Council claim the junc-tion is not used enough bypedestrians to warrant a cross-ing but Mr Carroll says that isbecause people are avoiding itbecause it is so dangerous.

He also says high hedges hidetraffic entering the junctionfrom Kenyons Lane lights.

Mr Carroll suggested that adelay of five or ten secondscould be added before lightsturn to green to give pedestri-ans a chance to cross.

Plans to build 66ft phonemast at ‘historic’ site metwith anger from residents

PLANS to build a 66ft high phone mast on an“historic” site in Thornton have been met withanger from local residents and the parishcouncil.

Telefonica Ltd has applied to Sefton Council toinstall the monopole mast and equipment at thecorner of Green Lane and Water Street.

Those against the plan, including residents andThornton Parish Council, claim it would be “nearlydouble” the size of any other natural or built struc-ture in the immediate surrounding area.

They also claim the patch of land to be used byTelefonica is the only remaining part of Thornton’svillage green and has “great significance” to thec o m m u n i t y.

Deputy Chair of Thornton Parish Council, Coun-cillor James O’Keeffe, said: “In the notificationletter Thornton Parish Council received, the pro-posed site is described as a grass verge, whichmakes the location sound inconsequential.

“However, the location is in fact the very centreof Thornton - emotionally, historically and geo-graphically. It continues to be a site of greatimportance to the community. As most locals are

aware this ‘grass verge’ is actually the only remain-ing part of Thornton’s village green and has, forcenturies, been of great significance to the village.

“The green’s close proximity to the historic oldstocks and sundial on the opposite side of WaterStreet help to highlight the site’s significance to thelocal area.

“The stocks were used by the whole parish ofSefton and the sundial is an ancient structurewhich was previously a Wayside cross similar tothe Broom’s Cross.

“The Parish Council recently oversaw a project torestore these historic structures. The green hasalways been at the heart of community-wideevents here in Thornton.

“In more recent years, the location is home to theRemembrance Sunday service and the Christmastree light switch on each year.

“Furthermore, the local community is worriedabout potential anti-social and criminal activitythat such a mast may attract; as recent media cov-erage attests, 5G masts have proven to becontroversial and these structures have becomemagnets for anti-social behaviour, arson and prop-erty damage.

“The very real threat of similar events happeningin a residential area at the heart of the communityand the heart of Thornton is something that all res-idents strongly want to avoid.

Energy firms givengreen light to resumechasing unpaid billsENERGY companies have been given thego-ahead to chase unpaid energy billsagain.

During lockdown, many households inSefton took up the option of ‘p a y m e n t - h o l i-days’ from the likes of mortgages andenergy bills.

Energy companies were told to stop chas-ing unpaid bills during this time, but theyhave now been allowed to resume this pro-cess - although they have been warned notto be aggressive in their pursuit.

Bailiffs have also been banned fromknocking on doors to collect other unpaiddebts, such as parking fines or council tax,and this will remain in place until August24.

Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearleysaid: “We recognise that suppliers cannotextend unlimited credit to customers - noris this in customers' interests overall - andwe anticipate suppliers will begin to restartdebt management activities that may havebeen paused during the immediate crisis.”

Meanwhile, energy companies have criti-cised proposals by the industry's regulatorto cut customer's bills and spend more ongreen investments.

Under Ofgem's plans, households couldsee their bills cut by £20 a year while firmsspend £25bn in the next five years to investin greener energy.

It means that the return energy firms willbe allowed to make from their investmentswill be nearly halved.

RSPCA staff bracefor busy summeras surge expected

THE RSPCA is bracing itself for a surge inabandoned animals and fears the fallout fromthe pandemic could see more owners strugglingto keep their pets.

Typically, the charity sees abandonment peak inthe summer months and between June and Augustlast year,16,519 animals were reported abandonedto the RSPCA which accounts for 30% of all animalsreported abandoned that year.

In Merseyside, the figure during these months was643.

The RSPCA is braced for an even bigger impactthis summer following the easing of lockdown andthe financial impact on the coronavirus pandemic,and has launched an emergency appeal to continueits vital rescue work.

Dermot Murphy, head of the RSPCA’s animal res-cue teams, said: “During lockdown we’ve seen petsbecome a source of comfort and support for peopleand it appears many people have taken on newanimals.

“Fortunately during this time we’ve dealt withfewer abandoned pets however we are worried thatas lockdown eases, people return to work, go onholidays or struggle financially we will be facing amassive surge of animal abandonments.

“Sadly summer tends to bring with it a surge inabandoned animals.

“We don’t know why but it may be a combinationof the warmer weather making people feel lessguilty about dumping a pet to fend for themselvesand people doing away on holiday abandoning petsinstead of arranging care for them.”

RSPCA rescue teams have been workingthroughout lockdown after being classified asessential key workers.

Dermot continued: “This is the toughest year yetfor the RSPCA despite the huge challenges, ouramazing teams have been continuing to rescueanimals throughout this crisis.

“I’d urge anyone struggling with their pet to askfor help. Animals have been there to help us throughthe crisis, please don’t abandon them now.”

Bus services arecut again, so howcan people usepublic transport?I notice that from June 21,2020, bus services in Lydi-ate on a Saturday havebeen reduced yet again.

The only service route300 which serves Lydiate(Liverpool to Southportand vice versa) has beenreduced to an hourly ser-vice.

Many people in Lydiatework both in Southportand Liverpool. No otherbuses serve Lydiate apartfrom the Maghull Circularto the Railway Station.Arriva discontinued the311 service a few years agowhich went from Liverpoolto Ormskirk via Lydiate.

Many people wish toshop at Aintree BusinessPark or other destinationsbut are now limited to amuch-reduced service.

Upon speaking to Arrivathey say there are otherservices in the localitywhich are also underreview and are anticipatedto be reduced or with-drawn.

Arriva have not madepassengers aware of thealterations as oldtimetables from April 2019are still displayed at busstops with passengers notaware of the changes.

Government and localMPs are always requestingpeople to use public trans-port and ease congestionon the roads. How can thishappen when services arebeing reduced?

‘Green grants’ to brighten townBOOTLE residents have longer to apply for thelatest batch of ‘green grants’ to fund projects thattackle grotspots and improve the appearance of thet o w n’s Linacre electoral ward.

Due to the pandemic, the deadline for the latestround of the Environmental Improvements Fundhas been extended to July 31. The fund offersgrants of £250-£1,000 to new projects developedby local people.

The grants are supported by Linacre Ward electedmembers, with funding coming from Sefton Coun-cil. The scheme is managed by Bootle-based socialenterprise Regenerus.

Any group of Linacre Ward residents can apply tothe fund, whether they are part of a communityorganisation working with volunteers, or just agroup of friends and neighbours who want to worktogether on a local environmental project.

Successful projects from previous rounds haveranged from improving one of the key gateways

into Bootle to creating a community ‘pick youro w n’ fruit, vegetables and herbs project in a localpark.

Elsewhere in the town, funding has brightenedup local roads with planters and hanging baskets,and helped people in recovery to clear overgrownplots and learn horticultural skills.

Ruth Livesey of Regenerus said: “Like prettymuch every other aspect of life in this country overthe last few months Covid 19 has had an impact onthe Environmental Improvements Fund.

“Residents just haven’t been able to get togetherto check out potential sites for improvement, andplan the details of their projects.

“That’s why we’ve extended the deadline for thelatest round of grants, and as things now slowly getback to something like normal we’re looking for-ward to receiving some imaginative applications.”

Face coverings to bemandatory in shopsFACE masks will become mandatory in shops andsupermarkets across Sefton.

The measure will come into force from July 24 inEngland and those who fail to comply will face a fineof up to £100.

Face coverings are already mandatory in othercountries, including Scotland, Spain, Italy and Ger-m a n y.

People have already been advised to wear cover-ings in enclosed public spaces, where they mayencounter people they would not usually meet.

Those using public transport have been told theymust use face masks.

Children under 11 and those with certain disabilit-ies will be exempt from the new rules on shops ands u p e r m a r ke t s .

It comes a week after Sefton Central MP Bill Ester-son called on the government to introduce thismeasure after a number of his constituents contac-ted him about their concerns when shopping.

He said: “A number of constituents have written tome to express their discomfort at shopping in super-markets where many people are not wearing face

coverings, where there seems to be no limit to thenumber of shoppers in store, where customers donot adhere to the two-metre distancing rule, wheretrolleys are not disinfected between uses, hand gelprovided but not visible or always used, and wherethere is no one-way system in place to help preventpeople passing each other in the store.”

While shop workers will be encouraged to promptcustomers to comply, they will not be expected toenforce the rules and this will be done by the police.

On Friday, June 26, several thousand people cel-ebrated the club winning the Premier League title,but there were a number of reported assaults, crim-inal damage and drug offences.

Burglary warnings over summerSEFTON homeowners are being urged by policeto take precautions to prevent burglary as morelockdown restrictions are eased.

With more people leaving their homes and theweather getting warmer, officers are concerned thatburglary numbers could soon start to rise.

Operation Castle, the forces response to burglary,has seen a 35% reduction in burglary across Mer-seyside since it was launched almost two-and-a-halfyears ago, with offenders being sentenced to a totalof more than 300 years in prison.

Detective Sergeant Darren Hankin said: “SinceOperation Castle was launched in March 2018,burglary across Merseyside has significantlydecreased and we have had a large number ofoffenders put behind bars with some significantsentences handed out by the courts.

“However, we are never complacent and we knowthat typically there can be a slight increase inoffences during the summer months, when theweather is warmer and people are not only out andabout more, but sometimes leave windows anddoors open too.

“Burglary is an invasive crime that pervadespeople’s homes and personal space, and can have asignificant impact on victims. This is often not dueto the financial value, but the emotional value ofthe property taken than can never be replaced. Wehave seen a significant reduction in the number of

burglaries since the launch of Op Castle and we areconstantly working to reduce that figure further.

Boost for tourismand hospitalitysectors in August

TOURISM and hospitality businesses in southSefton have been given a much-needed boostafter a raft of support measures wereannounced by the government.

VAT will be cut for six months for all businessesin the hospitality, accommodation and attractionsindustries, while members of the public will beurged to ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ with a new voucherscheme to encourage people to support local res-taurants throughout August.

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced themuch-needed boost on Wednesday, July 8, as partof his Summer Economic Update to kickstart theeconomy post-coronavirus.

The measures will see VAT for hospitality, accom-modation and attraction businesses cut from 20%to 5% for six months.

The move is designed to support the sectorswhich have been particularly hard hit by thecoronavirus crisis, helping businesses to recoverand boosting the number of jobs available acrossthe country.

The government will pay for up to 50% ofpeople’s meals out at restaurants, pubs and cafeson Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdaysthroughout August.

The Eat Out to Help Out scheme will entitleeveryone to a discount of up to 50% on their meal,up to a maximum of £10 per person. Businessescan claim the money back from the government,which will be paid in five working days.

Other measures which are designed to help busi-nesses include:

- Temporary removal of stamp duty on homes

under £500,000 until the end of March 2021 tohelp the housing market

- New Kickstart Scheme to create new, fully-sub-sidised jobs for young people.

- Upgrading the energy efficiency of homesacross England through a new Green HomesGrant.

The Government will provide £2billion to allowpeople to apply for a voucher, to fund at least two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the energy per-formance of their homes – up to a maximum of£5,000.

Low-income households will be eligible for up to100 per cent of government funding, up to£10,000

- A one-off £1000 payment to employers forevery furloughed employee retained to the end ofJanuary 2021

One of the problems the summer weather brings in its wake is a tendency for tall and not-so-tall plants to bolt. Just a light sprinkling of rain will do it. One minute you’ve a well ordered garden with border plants arranged in descending order from the back, the next, and you have an untidy wilderness of giants bending under their own weight. Have plenty of stakes to hand so you can tie them up before they fall down.

Bedding plants will greatly benefit from a feed of weak liquid manure around the middle of the month. Hardy annuals will also need attention, water, feed and a brisk hoeing will suit them. If the weather is dry you will need to water the rock garden, vegetable garden and the lawn, and you should mulch like mad all over. Leave the grass cuttings on the lawn after mowing as this also prevents rapid evaporation of moisture. Don’t be taken in by lots of heavy rain, judge the dampness of the weather or otherwise by examining the soil, because in summer especially, rain can evaporate faster than it takes to soak the ground, even after a torrential downpour.

If you are growing sweet peas avoid feeding them during this month. Too rich a soil will result in

generous, lush foliage, but comparatively few flowers. You will have to clip and prune hedges and shrubs to keep them growing in the right way. This is the peak month for cuttings. Roses especially can be propagated this way and it really is the cheapest and easiest way of increasing your stock. Of course weeds will also be going great guns and they can become a nuisance on crazy paving and other pathways. You can use any of the proprietary herbicides if you wish, but common salt is cheaper and does just as good a job.

If you are thinking of laying a new lawn, the site may be cleared and levelled this month and left to ‘air’ ready for planting next season. On established lawns the work of mowing and watering must go on. In addition pay particular attention to edges by trimming and securing where necessary. Edges that have fallen away may be cut back, built up again and prepared for re-turfing. Turf should normally be laid next month but the odd patch laid now and well watered in, should take and do well. The garden in full swing in July should be a blaze of colour. Do remember however that blooms fade and die, so keep dead-heading and, while you are about it, don’t forget to hoe amongst those weeds, they can be just as unsightly.

Ford missed out ontwo different tricksin this week alone!FORD is missing a trick this week – in fact, Ithink it’s missing two.

Yesterday – in a build-up that was leaked allover the internet to excitable motoring types! – itunveiled a new off-roader directly inspired by oneof its big hits of the Sixties. Yes, I know that’sexactly what the Mustang Mach-E purports to do,but the new Bronco is a very different beast.

It’s a big, knobbly off-roader that’s unashamedlyretro – yet the chaps in Detroit have no plans toship it over here.

Which, I reckon, is a mistake – sorry, chaps andchap-ettes, you can have the new Kuga instead.What are you missing?

Well, it’s going to be available in two-door form,including as a convertible, or you can spend it abit more and get it as a fully-fledged, five-doormudplugger that sort of looks like the new LandRover Defender described to an American overthe phone.

It also closely resembles the first-generationBronco (again, not sold here) of more than 50years ago, but the tech’s rather more up to date.Inside there’s an 8-inch or 12-inch touchscreeninfotainment system rigged up to Ford’s latesttech, and under the skin most of the oily bits areshared with the Ranger pick-up truck. There’s alsoa toned-down smaller model, the Bronco Sport,going on sale early next year too. The worst bit?In the States, the base model costs $29,995. I

know that US cars always cost more when theycross the Atlantic, but if you convert that priceinto Her Majesty’s English that’s about the sameas a mid-range Skoda Karoq.

The only thing likely to get any of our Americanfriends fired up is the conspicuous absence of a V8under the hood – sorry, bonnet – but it does havethe option of either a 266bhp, 2.3-litre Ecoboostengine closely related to the one you used to getin the Focus RS, or a 2.7-litre V6 sending 306bhpto all four wheels. Ford has also said that somepoint it’ll get around to offering it in hybrid formtoo, but I reckon it’d stand a much better chancehere if they’d just gone all-electric from the offand offered a Bronco-E too. Or at the very least,gone back to the aforementioned Ranger and

robbed its excellentDuratorq turbodiesellump. If we’re allowedthe Land RoverDefender and the IneosGrenadier, why aren’twe allowed this aswell?

The Bronco, once itssteering wheel’s on thecorrect side and it’s fit-ted with some Boris-friendly engines,deserves to do wellhere. It looks great andit has character –something you can’tsay about many newmotors in 2020.

Surely if Ford canbring the Mustang overhere, and in right-handdrive, it can do thesame with this, espe-cially as Britain is nowa country obsessedwith cars that look likeo f f- ro a d e r s .

No doubt it’ll be a hitin a Southport, Con-necticut, and Crosby,Alabama, but whatabout Southport andCrosby right here?
