County Scout Indoor Cooking

Competition

Saturday 26th March 2011 Jubilee Centre, Bradley Wood Scout Campsite Bookings have now opened for this annual event for teams of 2 Scouts (only 1 over 13 years of age). The rules (http://bit.ly/scoutcook2011) and equipment lists (http://bit.ly/scoutcook2011equip) are now available to download.

County Survival Skills weekend

Friday 8th – Sunday 10th July 2011 Blackhills Campsite Entries are invited on the basis of teams of three or more Explorer Scouts/Scouts/Guides. One or more teams may be entered. Individual entrants will be accepted on the understanding that they will be formed into composite teams for the duration of the camp. The syllabus includes activities, which will enable participants to be assessed for Survival Skills Part 2 (Scouts), Survival Award (Guides), Camp cook, Craft and Entertainers Badges. Previous training / experience is essential; this camp is unsuitable for first time / inexperienced campers. The camp programme is designed to teach skills that would be needed in real life survival situations and, as such, at times involves the preparation of live Game, Wildlife, Insects and Fish. It is stressed that these activities are purely voluntary. In addition all participants are required to build and live in survival shelters and to cook all meals over open fires, without utensils, for the duration of the camp. A limited number of places are available for those wishing to take their instructor award. Further details are available to download: Flyer http://bit.ly/surv-flyer Info http://bit.ly/surv-info Booking form http://bit.ly/surv-booking Badge requirements http://bit.ly/surv-badge Or from: Survival Camp, Jubilee Centre, Bradley Wood Campsite, Shepherds Thorn Lane, Brighouse, West Yorkshire, HD6 3TU

Green Withens update Since we received planning permission six weeks ago, we’ve made far more progress at Green Withens than I would have believed possible. The clubhouse has been partially covered with metal cladding, new windows and doors fitted and the existing windows reglazed. The main entrance has been widened and new metal doors fitted. The building is now secure, except for bars and shutters still to fit to the windows. The contractors have virtually finished the boatpark after laying drainage, a fabric membrane and lots of hardcore. Most of the fencing is erected, with just a short section to complete in the next few days. The road has been resurfaced with hardcore, although the very wet weather means that it’s currently still very muddy and requires further work next week. Five containers have been delivered; the last two this week and these are already in position at the far end of the boat park. The car park and the area round the clubhouse is currently a sea of mud, but once the heavy wagons and plant have finished, I am confident that with a few dry days it will quickly improve. Volunteers wanted There’s a lot of work to do over the next eight weeks, most of which is on or in the clubhouse. Principally it will be woodwork and decorating, but there will be lots of other jobs including transporting boats and equipment. We are having regular working parties every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. These will start at 9.30am, and I suggest that sandwiches and a flask are brought. We haven’t a standard finishing time, this depending upon who turns up and what we are doing. If you would like to help, please drop me an email, or just call in at one of the working parties. When we’re at Green Withens, the gate from the road will be closed but unlocked. Please close it again after driving through to stop the sheep escaping off the moor.

Getting on the water It’s our hope that staff will get on the water over the Easter weekend and make sure that all our craft are buoyancy tested, properly rigged and tried afloat. Lots of help will be needed. What are we going to do at Green Withens? We intend to run taster evenings for sailing, rafting, kayaking and open canoeing. We are also planning a comprehensive range of RYA sailing courses for Scouts, Explorers and adults. BCU training will be included – more details soon. It’s our hope that on Saturdays we’ll be offering sessions on the water for Bradley Wood and Scammonden Activity Centre visitors, usually with three different activities to try. Full details will be circulated via WYSMAIL as soon as we are confident about a start date. When we are operational To operate Green Withens to its full potential, we will need a lot of staff, both on the water and some shore based. NGB qualifications aren’t essential for all staff, and we’ll be running a lot of in house training. We’ll need sailors, kayakers, open canoeists, rafting instructors, plus much more. We also hope to introduce windsurfing for Explorer Scouts in 2012, provided that we can find suitable staff. Further details about the various jobs and training opportunities will be available in the middle of March, but in the meantime if you would like to volunteer, or be kept up to date with progress please drop me an email. There are a few new pictures on our website www.greenwithens.org.uk and more will be added soon. Peter Haigh 01484 425524 [email protected]

Help! We require second hand uniforms for a number of deprived young people in a group within our County. If your group, section or parents can help us put these youngsters into Beaver and Cub Scout uniforms (jerseys, trousers or both) it would be appreciated by them and their leaders. If you can spare a uniform or two, can you drop them off at the Jubilee Centre at Bradley Wood Scout Campsite labelled for the attention of Derek Dodkins (County Inclusion Team).

District Administrator vacancy Pennine Calder District is currently looking to recruit an administrator to arrange the interviews needed for the appointments of adults in the district. There are 10 people in the district trained to carry out these interviews. The ideal candidate will be well organised and an ability to use a number of computer packages will be a distinct advantage. A knowledge of Scouting is desirable but not essential. There will be a significant degree of both verbal and written communication, the major part of the role will be working alone so volunteers must be able to use their own initiative and carry out tasks without close supervision. Access to a telephone and email and are essential. Charges for phone calls, postage and so on will be reimbursed. YPS Tutor Course

& Adults 2nd – 3rd April 2011 The YPS Tutor qualification will enable you to run air rifle target shooting activities. It is 2 full day course at Blackhills Scout Campsite and you must attend the whole course to gain the qualification. The cost is yet to be finalised as it is dependent on the number of participants. I can be reasonably confident in saying that if we only get the minimum required participants (6 - unlikely) then the course will be around £75 for the weekend; if we get the maximum required participants (12 - much more likely) then it will be around £55 per participant. The greatest expense here is your registration with the NSRA and also covers rental of classroom, range, equipment and instructor expenses. I would like to put the list together as soon as possible and the invitation will be county wide so if you are interested, please put your name down ASAP. Places will be assigned on a first come first served basis. Please put "Shooting course" or "YPS tutor" in the subject line, particularly if your email might end up in my junk mail!
