Despite the favorites, state qualification andregional championsappear up for grabs.
By Dahl EricksonFirst off, welcome to the 4A West Re-
gional Basketball Tournament. Star Valley isnot the easiest place to get to, and if you’vemade the effort to drive here from anotherportion of the Cowboy State we welcomeyou and hope you enjoy your time here.
Ironically, you will likely miss out on whatmakes the area so amazing during the longwinter months. Some of the finest snowmo-biling in the nation is less than a half hourfrom where you are currently sitting and it’sthe natural outdoor playland that is the rea-son why so many call Star Valley their home.
Here are a few things that you may beused to that you will not find here.
McDonalds. Nope. The closest one is70 miles north, so I hope Ronald will forgiveyou for not visiting this weekend. Major hotelchains. You likely already know this, but wehave some fine local accomodations andowners who will be glad to have you here. You may have to drive 15-20 minutes fromwhere you are staying to the high school, butyou won’t be fighting traffic or stop lights.Wal-Mart. Again, the closest one is in IdahoFalls, some 100 miles away. While as anarea the unique makeup of the populationdoes not lend itself to some of the commonammenities that you may be used to finding, you will find friendly folks who love to watchgreat sports. When Dr. James Naismith firsthung his fabled peach baskets in an effort toinvent a sport that could be enjoyed dur-ing the long Massachusetts winter, hecould have been talking about StarValley just as well, where earlysettlers described the sea-sons as “nine months ofwinter and threemonths of late fall.”
We don’t haveany peachb aske t s ,but I
think you’ll agree that one of the finest basket-ball facilities in the state will be your home forthis year’s tournament.
Good luck to all and may the best team win.Overview:On the girls’ side of the equation, the
Rock Springs Lady Tigers have done amasterful job of playing to their strengthson offense while limiting quality shots withtheir defense. They have earned the topseed and as such have already punchedtheir ticket for Casper next weekend. Like-wise, the Natrona Fillies in their strong tra-dition have earned the number two seedand will also have Thursday off before en-tering the tournament semi-finals.
The rest of the field includes two teamsin Star Valley and Evanston that are regionalrivals as well as closely matched conferencefoes. While the standings would say thatthese two teams will earn the two remainingstate tournament births, Green River andRiverton will be fighting for their very sur-vival. The Lady Wolves have already showntheir resolve this school year with a state vol-leyball title, and the Lady Wolverines will beplaying like a team with nothing to lose asthey look for an upset.
On the boys’ side, the defendingchampion, Natrona Mustangs, arebucking the trend that the con-ference season should takea toll on your overallrecord. After start-ing (3-8), the‘Stangs haveswept the
4A West en route to the top seed.Evanston, using a relentless and tenaciousstyle of play, will certainly be looking toavenge losses to Natrona in the regionalfinal as the number two seed. The rest ofthe field includes capable talent that will beleft home after this weekend. The Star Val-ley Braves will be looking to earn their firststate tournament birth since moving to the4A Class in 2008, while Rock Springs willbe trying to reclaim their momentum fromearlier in the season after a quick start. TheRiverton Wolverines appear to be a team noone is anxious to play with their physicalstyle and their hunger to reach the statetournament. Green River, deci-mated by injuries before the sea-son even started, havesteadily improved andany team looking foran easy win willhave to lookelsewhere.

STAR VALLEY
(11-11)Overall (6-4)4A West
The Lady Braves, who won a total
of ten games in the past two sea-
sons combined, appear ready to
take the next step and qualify for
state where the program has been
absent since the 2005-06 campaign. A
team laden with seniors, it’s generally a
spark from a member of the bench who
spurs the team into action. The ladies’
main weakness is the ability to score con-
sistently as they rank 11th at 40.4 points
per game. However, defense is where this
team hangs their hat, ranking second at
39.1. A quick glance at the +1.3 point
differential tells you that this isn’t a team
with a lot of room for error. However,
the Lady Braves have gone (5-2) on
their home floor this year and will be
a tough out in front of their home
crowd. Randi Robinson leads the
team in scoring at just over
eight points per game, but this
is a team effort on offense
where six players average
at least four points.

EVANSTON(10-14)Overall (6-4) 4A West
The Lady Devils are hoping to re-
turn to the state tournament after
missing out on the event last sea-
son. On paper, the Devils have
plenty of height in the middle with
Kelsi Thornock and UW-bound Erin Kirby.
With that understood, it’s the guards that
make this team go with Lauren Thomas
and Sami Kofoed providing the gasoline
for the offensive engine. Evanston aver-
ages 45.2 points per game on offense,
ranking them eighth overall while their de-
fense is ranked seventh at 46.4. With a -
1.2 point differential, the Lady Devils are
another team with little room for error.
Kirby leads the way at 9.8 points per
game while Thomas and Kofoed chip
in 8.6 and 7.9 respectively. Kofoed
rings the bell from the three-point
line at 33 percent on 117 at-
tempts. The Devils have lost
their share of close games,
with six of their losses at ten
points or less. They also
have the ability to surprise
with wins over Natrona
and Rock Springs.

GREEN RIVER
(5-17)Overall (2-8) 4A West
Green River is looking to return to
the state tournament after a regu-
lar season that saw the losses pile
up just a bit. The Lady Wolves
rank tenth in scoring at 40.5
points per game but give up 54.4 points
per outing for a -13.9 point differential.
Their defense ranks 11th just in front of
conference cohort, Riverton. Individually,
Dani Hardy leads the squad in scoring
(15.4), assists (2.9) and steals (3.9).
Janelle Strampe leads the team in re-
bounding (7.7) and also pours in 10.7
points per game. Both were key mem-
bers of the Lady Wolves state champi-
onship run in volleyball this season but
they will need some offensive help
from their teammates. Turnovers
have killed the Lady Wolves this
season as the team averages
24.9 per outing. If the outside
shot is falling combined with a
strong presence inside, this
could be a team to watch
out for.

ROCK SPRINGS
(18-4)Overall (9-1) 4A West
The State Runner-Up last year to
Gillette, the Lady Tigers are sixth
in overall offense and third in de-
fense. Courtney Patterson leads
this team with her tough physical
style while averaging 18 points per game
and six rebounds. Her 2.9 steals per
game show her versatility.Patterson
should also like playing in the SVHS gym
where she scored 22 points in a game
earlier this season. Grace Newman is the
only other player averaging double figures
with 11.5 per game while compiling an
impressive 5.7 assists per contest. Aver-
aging 50.4 points per game while al-
lowing just 40.6, their +9.8 point
differential makes them the most for-
midable team in the tournament.
After compiling a perfect regular
season going into the final game,
the Lady Tigers were upset by
Evanston which should ensure
a hungry group eager to re-
establish their dominance.

RIVERTON(1-22)Overall (0-10) 4A West
There is no escaping the fact that
it’s been a tough season for the
Lady Wolverines and their faithful.
Offense has been hard to come by
as the team ranks 12th in scoring
at 28.8 points per game. Defensively the
team also ranks 12th at 54.7 points per
game, a huge point differential of -25.9.
The program will be hoping to end an11-
game losing streak since a January win
over Lander and return to Casper for the
first time since the 2002-03 season
when the Lady Wolverines finished third.
Individually, Riverton will be leaning on
forward Kacie Lynch and center Han-
nah Svilar who both had nice outings
their last time in Afton. Marcia Ash-
down and Shay Cooper will be
looking to lead the team from the
guard positions.Facing off
against the hometown Lady
Braves may not be a bad
thing as Riverton kept things
interesting in their last
meeting in Afton.

NATRONA(15-6) Overall (7-3) 4A West
The third place team from last
year’s state tournament, the Fillies
have been chasing Rock Springs
since a semi-final defeat last year
in Casper. The gap between the
two teams is slim with Natrona ranking
fifth in offense (53.8) and sixth in defense
(44.7). The Fillies are led by Stephanie
Lee, averaging just under 15 points per
game while pulling down 7.4 rebounds
and blocking 2 shots per game. Ashley
Creager is the shooter of the group, at-
tempting a whopping 145 three-point
baskets on the season, connecting on
34 percent of them. Natrona is the
best rebounding team in the tourna-
ment, ranking second in the state at
31.3 per contest.The Fillies
should like playing in Star Valley
where they have never tasted
defeat in their program’s his-
tory. Traveling the furthest of
any team in the tourney, a
day off on Thursday will
likely be appreciated.
