Door Collection

On Sunday, February 25, we will have a door collection to benefit Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM). The following information was taken from their website, www.lhm.org. LHM is a global media ministry with the Gospel proclaimed to more

than 56 million people worldwide each week. There are 34 ministry centers on six continents and the program reaches into more than 50 countries. The LHM’s flagship ministry is The Lutheran Hour which airs weekly on more than 1,800 radio stations. Go to their website for more information about this important outreach of the Lutheran church. Continue to keep this ministry in your prayers.

Dear Members of Friedheim,

The First Commandment is so critical. To follow it, we must fear, love, and trust in God above all things, which includes our own self. More information does not equal being more informed.

In this age of "information overload," everyone seems to think we are more informed nowadays, what with 24-hour news, social media, and real-time communication. However, what we are missing is perhaps just how controlled that information now has become. The news is much more biased, and computer algorithms are swayed, such that, the information each of us receives is only that which someone else has decided we should receive. For instance, when you do a "Google" search, the results you see are based on algorithms set by you own personal internet usage. What you see is based on your own biases and perceptions. Not everyone has the same search results show up. Not everyone sees the same advertisements, or the same posts, or the same "news." You could say we are actually being manipulated by our own habits. Now that's a scary thought. And it's being played out, right in front of us, all on a daily basis! 1

Adam's temptation was to doubt the Father's promises and to become his own "God." He was tempted to question, "Did God say?" and was promised, “You shall not die...for God knows that in the day you eat of it...you will be...like God..." (Genesis 3:1-4)

As the Substitute for all the sons of men, Jesus is driven by the Spirit “into the wilderness” to be “tempted by Satan” (Mark 1:12–13), in order to endure and defeat all temptation. We are tempted by our own desire, which conceives and “gives birth to sin” (James 1:14–15). But this blessed Man, Christ Jesus, remained “steadfast under trial,” and He has received “the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). His faithfulness. His victory. His life. Are now given to us by His grace in the Gospel.

As we begin the disciple of Lent, there will be ample opportunity for us to focus on Christ and His suffering for us. Starting on Transfiguration Sunday, we will once again offer a Lenten devotional. Hard copies will be made available at church. These devotions will also be made available on our parish Facebook page and on pastor’s blog on our parish home page. This year we will be reviewing Christ’s Redemption through the Old Testament. These readings come to us from the Propers that we use Sunday mornings in worship. During our Mid-week Lenten services, we will review Psalm 23. On

1 Ironically, this thought was suggested to me by a friend I have had correspondence for many years via social media. We have met

only once in person.

Sunday morning, we will focus on the topic, “The Way of the Cross.” May the Savior direct us throughout our Lenten Pilgrimage.

Board of Stewardship’s Food for Thought – Because God First Loved Us

Each February, we celebrate Valentine’s Day so we associate this month with love. Sharing valentines with loved ones is a wonderful way to express love to our family members and friends. As Christians, we know the occasion that marks the greatest gift of love is celebrated at Christmas when Jesus came into the world as a servant and took upon Himself our sin and the sins of the whole world. Jesus was willing to give up His Heavenly realm and glory to become one of us and then suffer and die for us.

The love of Jesus is far more wondrous than we can ever imagine. The Apostle Paul prayed that we would be filled with the Holy Spirit “so that Christ may dwell in [our] hearts through faith—that [we], being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that [we] may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19).

God loves us so much that He was willing to send His Son to suffer and die on our behalf (John 3:16). The Apostle John said it so well: “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). One of the best ways we can respond out of gratitude for that wondrous love is through our faithful stewardship. Stewardship is love in action. God’s love for us prompts us to love others. The Holy Spirit opens our hearts and minds so we experience God’s love and equips and makes us eager to show our love through our deeds and words.

A Sunday School Note: Since the Kindergartners – 2nd graders are singing at Preble on Sunday, February 25, there is no Sunday School for the nursery – Kindergarten class that day. Both of the teachers for this class have children who will be singing at Preble that day. Please mark this on your calendar.

The following information was taken from our history book – Zion Friedheim Lutheran Church – 1838-2013. In 1836 Adams County was organized separately from Allen County. The family of Friedrich Buuck arrived in Fort Wayne and purchased a tract of land, sight unseen, about 16 miles

Page 4: Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School

southeast of Fort Wayne in the northwest corner of Adams County. Upon this tract of land, the Buuck family built the first log cabin in the area. Soon other families began to arrive, and thus was formed a small settlement, which later was given the name Friedheim. In June of 1837, Pastor Hoover found out about this small settlement of German Lutherans. Making the trip either on foot or on horseback, Pastor Hoover began paying regular visits to conduct services in the homes of the settlers. On February 25, 1838, this small group met to organize a congregation, the first rural congregation in Adams County. At this meeting, six candidates were nominated and two weeks later, on March 11, the first election of officers was held. The first officers of the congregation were Friedrich Buuck, elder, and Christian Fuhrman and Heinrich Loeffler, deacons. The charter members of the congregation, 26 adults and 20 children, were as follows:

o Fuhrman, Christian, wife Barbara, and children Philip, Jacob, Barbara, Christian, Charley, Henry, Davie o Gebel, Adam, wife Sophia, and children Charlotte, Dorothy o Kiefer, Geroge and wife Katherina o Repper, Ludwig, wife Sophia, and child Ludwig o Muesing, Christian, wife Christina, and children Christian, Christina, Louise, Sophia, Frederick, Ellenora, Marie o Stoppenhagen, Ernst o Buuck, Friedrich, wife Margaretha, and children Charlotte, Sophia, Louisa, Dietrich, Helena o Loeffler, Heinrich and wife Margareta o Kleinschmidt, Christian, wife Elisabeth, and children Christian, Carolina, Sophia o Reinking, Conrad Frederic, wife Maria, and children Eliza, Conrad, Aerhardina, Augusta, Sophia, Helena o Kaaze, Louis and wife o Conrad, George, wife Frederica, and children William, Frederic

Any information that needs to be included in the 2017 Annual Report should be in the church office no later than Thursday, February 1.

Please keep in mind that the February Council meeting has been moved to Monday, February 5, as not to interfere with LBI.

Pastor will be conducting chapel services at Adams Heritage on Thursday, February 1, at 11 a.m.

An update of the SGO credits – As of January 25, there is still $1,383,506 left in SGO credits. The Monday Night Church League is winding down. Friedheim has one regular season game left to play on Monday, February 5, at 6 p.m. versus the Church of God at the Service Complex. Tournament action begins on Monday, February 19, with four games scheduled and the semi-finals and finals set for Monday, February 26. All games will be played at the Service Complex. Up-to-date information on the tourney will be printed in the bulletin.

Friedheim is sponsoring a “Pack Away Hunger” event at Wyneken on Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24. On Friday, students from Wyneken and other area schools will be on the packing crew. On Saturday, members of the community will have an opportunity to help. On Saturday, there will be two shifts – in the morning from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. We need 100 people per shift. So, your help is definitely needed! Come as a family—mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and kids—as there is a job for about any age. Want to volunteer to work a shift? Go to [email protected], and indicate the shift you wish to work, as well as your name and the names of others working with you and the best way to contact you if there is a need to get back with you. You may also contact Dawn Buuck (724-7952) as she is coordinating the volunteer schedule. Our goal is to raise $20,000 and pack 80,000 meals. The committee is looking at grant opportunities, corporate sponsorship, and individual contributions. As we did last year, an empty meal packet will be distributed to each family on Sunday, February 4. You are asked to put in a donation (perhaps your loose change for the month, or match the cost of a meal when you go out to eat, or …) and return it in the packet and place it in the soup pots that will be in either entranceway of the church on Sunday, February 25. If you are aware of a grant opportunity or a company that may be willing to help sponsor this event, please contact Pastor Dahling.

There will be an organizational meeting for this year’s Pack Away Hunger event on Sunday, February 4, at 2 p.m. in the Gathering Area. Members of the Board of Outreach and Board of Stewardship should attend this meeting.

With Our Organizations

So as to let everyone who wishes to attend LBI the opportunity to do so, the Altar Guild’s meeting in February has been moved to Monday, February 12, at 7 p.m. in the Gathering Area. Remember, if you want the Altar Guild to order flowers for church for you to contact Shelly Kiefer. If you want a note placed in the Sunday bulletin, you need to contact the church office with that information.

The choir will continue to practice on Wednesday evenings; however, with the beginning of Lent on February 14, the choir practice will be held following the mid-week worship service. New members are always welcome. Consider being a part of Friedheim’s choir. If you have questions, you can talk to Jody Paschal, our Director of Music, at 223-2050.

The LWML will be serving meals during the midweek Lenten worship services. The first meal takes place on Ash Wednesday (also Valentine’s Day) on Wednesday, February 14. Serving starts at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall. All funds raised on the 14th will go to The Hope Clinic. Meals are also scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, and 28. On the 28th the funds raised will go towards Pack Away Hunger. Of course, your help is needed. If you are willing to bring a dessert (three are needed each night), help prepare the meal, or serve it, please contact Shirley Buuck (547-4415) or contact the church office (547-4248

or [email protected]). What’s on the menu? On the 14th, you can enjoy Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, a salad bar, dessert, and a drink. Lasagna is the main course on the 21st with garlic bread, a salad bar, dessert, and a drink. On the 28th, you can enjoy a chicken dish along with the salad bar, dessert, and drink.

And 7th graders, if you need community service hours, we can always use your help!

The Morning Glories continue to meet on Tuesday mornings (weather permitting) at 9 a.m. The group is working on items to take to this year’s Soup & Sandwich. If you want to help (or have some ideas as to what the group should be working on), come to the craft room. The group usually stays until about 11:30 a.m. Hope to see you!

Lutheran Life Villages (LLV) appreciates the support received by our congregation – whether it is donating a cake to help the residents celebrate their birthdays or volunteering as Sunday wheelchair escorts so individuals can more easily attend worship services. Have you wondered how else you could help? Their Activity Department has a “wish list” for items that would be useful in their interaction with the residents. The item could be used as a Bingo prize (one of the residents’ favorite activities), for a craft project, or just to enhance their stay at LLV. If you have any of these items and would be willing to donate them to LLV, you can contact Susana Diaz, Activity Director, at 260-447-1591, extension 2127 with any questions and to find out where to drop off the items. If you would rather, you can also give these items to our congregational representatives, Bonnie Buuck or Shirley Buuck, and they will deliver them to LLV for you!

A Well-Balanced Church

The owner of a new puppy got a good laugh when the little dog, out for a walk, had an itch. The trouble was that the itchy spot was accessible only to a hind leg. So, while still walking, the pup tried to scratch and tumbled over, rolling a couple of times before coming to rest.

In several places throughout Scripture, the apostle Paul writes about the church as the body of Christ, and of the importance of each member. Just as the dog needed each leg to stay balanced while walking, so the church needs all the different God-given gifts of its members: preachers and teachers, friendly visitors, generous givers, musicians and singers, wise parents and imaginative children, people to produce and distribute meals, newsletters, lesson materials, and on and on.

When we start thinking that some part of Christ’s body isn’t necessary, we risk taking quite a tumble!

We received the following Christmas message from Lutheran Military Veterans & Families Ministries. – As we celebrate our 10th year in ministry, we would like to thank you for your prayers and financial support. May you have a blessed and Merry Christmas.

“What Do I Have?”

What do I have, Lord, that you would need me as a servant?

Eyes, he said, to see the beauty in all that I’ve made —

and my children as they travel life’s highway.

Hands, he said, to reach out and touch hurting souls,

to give a hug or encouraging pat on the back.

Feet, he said, to lead my children through this world of strife and to help them run from sin and follow me.

Mouth, he said, to lift up your voice and sing praises to me so others may hear the joy in your heart.

Ears, he said, to listen to my still, small voice of love

and to hear my children when they cry for help.

Heart, he said, so you may know the full love of my Spirit and love my children as I have loved you.

—Thomas Butler

Third Quarter Chapel Offerings - Sharing God’s Love – Gifts for Bethesda.

We have designated our third quarter chapel offerings to Bethesda Lutheran Communities. Bethesda is a Christian

organization that provides homes and other services for people with developmental disabilities across the United States.

We create connections that support people on their journey to live the best life possible. We help people make a home for

themselves. Those we support live their lives as they choose in an environment where they learn, grow and connect.

Bethesda helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities connect with their communities. Through these

connections, the people we support are empowered to make choices that grow into a greater independence that enables

them to continue their journey to live the best life possible. Bethesda is committed to enabling the people we support

grow their faith, while discovering welcoming, fully-inclusive congregational communities where they can connect with

others. Bethesda is a national leader in providing homes and support, promoting awareness and advocating for people

with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Operating at program locations across the United States, we succeed
