John D. Rockefeller once said, “The ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee. And I will pay more for that ability than for any other under the sun.” Roger Perry, a political consultant in Chicago, gave similar advice: The only advice some of my clients need when they come to see me can be summed up in two words: “Lighten up!” It’s ironic, but your career and indeed your happiness can depend on whether you get serious about taking yourself less seriously. According to executive recruiters, for seven out of ten people who lose their jobs, the cause isn’t a lack of skill - it’s personality conflicts. The management newsletter Bottom Line/Personal reports a similar finding: “As an executive reaches middle management and beyond, the primary criteria for advancement are communication and motivation skills, rather than job performance. Relations with superiors and peers are also critical.” The bottom line: Top management promotes people it likes. What’s the most common reason someone isn’t liked in business? He or she takes themselves too seriously. They have no sense of humor. Certainly, it’s important to take your job and your life seriously. But people who take themselves too seriously tend to believe that their title or their intelligence makes them more important than others. Perry goes on to suggest asking ourselves these questions: When someone comes to me with a problem…do I shift gears and listen - or put the person off with hopes they will go away? How often do I find myself complaining about something? Do I take a lot of satisfaction in lecturing people or being tough with them? When someone tells me a new idea, do I look for an objection to puncture his/her balloon? How often do I use the word “I”. During the month of July, there are opportunities to “go light” and enjoy family/ friends/fellowship. There are July 4 th celebrations, opportunities for summer get-aways, plenty of time for fellowship/food between worship services at Church… just to name a few. My goodness, even Jesus needed time to relax and enjoy his friends…why should we be any different? My prayer for you in July is that you find some time to relax, unwind and enjoy a good book, your porch, your swing, a hammock. We need these times of re-creation to keep us light and easy…and alive! FROM THE PASTOR- Lighten up…it’s Summer! John D. Rockefeller once said, “The ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee. And I will pay more for that ability than for any other under the sun.” Roger Perry, a political consultant in Chicago, gave similar advice: The only advice some of my clients need when they come to see me can be summed up in two words: “Lighten up!” It’s ironic, but your career and indeed your happiness

can depend on whether you get serious about taking yourself less seriously. He or she takes themselves too seriously. They have no sense of humor. Certainly, it’s important to take your job and your life seriously. But people who take themselves too seriously tend to believe that their title or their intelligence makes them more important than others. Perry goes on to suggest asking ourselves these que stions: • When someone comes to me with a problem…do I shift gears and listen - or put the person off with hopes they will go away? • How often do I find myself complaining about something? • Do I take a lot of satisfaction in lecturing people or being tough with them? • When someone tells me a new idea, do I look for an objection to puncture his/her balloon? AEDs for Kimball Your church Council has been exploring the purchase of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) for our church. We are approaching this in two ways. First, we want to assess the interest from the congregation in participating in training in how to use the devices. To that end, we will have bulletin inserts in the month of July that you can use to provide feedback on that topic. We will not schedule any training until we are prepared to purchase and install the devices so you will not be committing to a specific date when you use the bulletin insert. Secondly, we will look at the expense and make recommendations for the 2020 budget.

Automated External Defibrillators are devices which can increase the chances of survival for someone experiencing out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. You have probably noticed that more places of business have AEDs on site and you may have noticed them at other churches that you have visited. They are becoming more commonplace because of efficacy and simplicity of operation. Some information that contributed to our pursuit of this idea follows.

• According to OSHA, using a defibrillator on an individual in cardiac arrest increases his survival rate by 60 percent.

• “For every minute that passes without CPR or defibrillation, the chances of a cardiac arrest victim’s survival decrease by up to 10 percent,” is also stated in OSHA documents.

• 3 to 5 minutes - the maximum number of minutes before a shock from an AED should be delivered to an SCA (Sudden Cardia Arrest) victim

• 8 to 10 minutes - the average number of minutes for EMS to arrive at the scene of an emergency

• Are AEDs safe? YES! Rest assured you cannot accidentally shock someone with an AED! The AED is continually monitoring a patient’s heart rhythm and if it detects a “shockable” rhythm, it will advise a shock. Between advising the shock and the shock being administered, if the AED no longer detects a shockable rhythm, it will not shock the patient - no matter how many times you press the shock button.

• Who can use an AED? Anyone can use an AED. If a child can follow the directions, they can effectively deploy an AED. It requires no strength or stamina to deliver a shock.

Clearly, there are advantages to having devices like this readily available. We must commit to having staff members and other volunteers trained in the use of the devices and we must commit to regular inspection and maintenance of the devices in order to make sure that they will work properly in case of need.

We are recommending the purchase of two devices (upstairs/downstairs). Prices vary according to training included/not included, the brand of device, cabinetry and signage, and new versus re-certified devices. Warranties also vary depending on brand and new vs. recertified devices. A member of our congregation has found someone who will conduct the training at no charge. The cost range for two AEDS within the above noted parameters is $1600.00 to $2800.00. If you are interested in more specific details about the costs and purchasing options, please ask Laura Abernathy for details.

We are committed to working toward making Kimball a safer space to participate in worship and activities. We believe that having AEDs on property is a wise move, even if we hope that those devices remain unused. Please contact any member of Council with your thoughts on this initiative.

Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church Kimball Communicator-Newsletter 101 Vance St. Kannapolis, NC 28081 704-933-4101

30TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY WOMEN’S PRAYER BREAKFAST

August 10, 2019 at 9 a.m. the Women of Kimball Prayer Breakfast and we want to ask you to mark your calendars to include and support this event and invite friends and family from the community. Our speaker will be Nikki Rainey from Present Age Ministries and the theme for the event will be taken from Romans

12:2—“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and

acceptable and perfect.”—Sign up deadline is July 31st.

July Appeal for Southern Seminary Opening the Doors, Answering the Spirit’s Call

During the month of July, we will have a special appeal for our Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. Seminarians in North Carolina

face daunting challenges including an average debt when they leave seminary of nearly $50,000. This campaign will do several things: assist current seminarians as they prepare for ministry in the NC Synod; assist future seminarians who will attend Southern for reduced tuition, room and board, and books.; assist elderly, retired pastors who struggle with very small retirement incomes. Our appeal in North Carolina has a goal of $2,000,000. We currently lack $500,000 to meet that goal – and this is KMLC’s opportunity to assist . Your offerings will be gladly received during the month of July. Checks may be made payable to Kimball and designated “Seminary Fund” or you may pay on line.
