STEAM Day Fun!
The first semester has come and gone and things are going great here at Wyndmere School. I hope everyone is enjoying the Winter break and has had a safe and happy holiday season. Please make note that school will reconvene with the start of the second semester on Thursday, January 4th, 2018.
Our Buildings and Grounds Committee will be gathering input for our summer projects soon. We have had a number of suggestions and will continue to collect and discuss before finalizing our summer plans. If you have suggestions or see a need, please contact Janet Bell, John Manstrom, Randy Smykowski, or myself so that we can add it to the list for discussion.
As we close out 2017, I would like to thank everyone for your support of our entire school system throughout the year. Strong parental support does make a difference in the education of our youth. Parents who get involved make a huge difference. Everyone involved, including the parents and staff, wants what is best for all of the kids. I look forward to the coming year as we are doing great things here at Wyndmere!
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me during school hours.
Happy Holidays to Everyone!!!!

High School Happenings
Congrats to the STEAM Day
Winning Team
7-12 Principal Report Congratulations to Kolten Mellem on being selected to be our school’s December Student of the Month. Kolten plans on attending NDSU and majoring in Agriculture. Congratulations to Evan Braaten on being named 1 of 2 Student Council Representatives for North Dakota. He spent a great deal of time preparing for his campaign and his hard work paid off.
Our STEAM day was held on the last day of the 2nd quarter. Mrs. Fyre, Mrs. Orth, Mrs. Braun, Ms. Zaun, and Mr. Jezusko organized the activities for the day revolving around a “Survivor” theme. The students and staff had a great time. Congrats to the winning team of: Kelly Heitkamp, Cory Hulm, Mason Nelson, Alee Searles, Brooke Davis and Johnathan Gutzmer.
Congratulations to Mrs. Jezusko and all of the music students on treating us to a great concert on December 8. I still have the Peanuts theme song stuck in my head. Mrs. Jezusko has created a Facebook Page for the Music Department. It is listed under Wyndmere Music Department and we invite you to Like this Page. Mrs. Jezusko is asking for volunteers to play alongside the pep band for the January 19 boys basketball game vs. Kindred. Please contact her at the school or email her at [email protected] if you are interested in “Rockin’ the Nest.” Activities Director Report The basketball teams have all begun their seasons and the month of January is jam packed with contests. The girls’ basketball team is currently 1-4 and the boys’ basketball team has a record of 4-0. The boys opened up region play with an emphatic statement by beating Hankinson 67-37. The girls’ game vs. Park Christian (on January 15th) will be played in Wyndmere.
I hope all of you have a great Christmas Break. Looking back at 2017, we accomplished many achievements during the year. Elementary Endeavors Winter is here! After our brief experience with snow in November it has been a rather dry winter so far. As the snow begins to fall, and temperatures begin to drop, it is important to remember winter gear for students. We will go out for recess, even if for part of the time, when the temperature is around zero and wind chills are not too bad. Proper winter gloves (not stretchy thin ones), hats (not hoods), boots and snow pants are required to fully participate in recess time. I believe in getting kids moving whenever possible and don't want them to have to stay inside.
Our food drive for the Richland-Wilkin United Way Backpack Program was a HUGE success! We brought in 80 cartons of pudding, 36 boxes of granola bars, 86 peanut butter containers, and cash donations, which were all given to this great cause! It is always nice to see this kind of giving from our families in the community.
I hope everyone had a wonderful break and are ready to come back refreshed and energized!
Mikal Kern - Elementary Principal

Important Reminders
• Please remember to check your child’s lunch balance in PowerSchool (We recommend checking it AT LEAST once a month!). Here’s the link: https://wyndmere.ps.state.nd.us/public/home.html
• e-Funds for Schools has several great options to make School Lunch Payments much easier. You can set up an auto-pay system. When your child’s balance drops below an amount you set, e-Funds will make an automatic payment for you so your child never goes negative. Or you can set up a monthly payment to be automatically deducted from your checking account each month on a date you choose. Here is the link for e-funds: https://eps.mvpbanking.com/cgi-bin/efs/login.pl?access=55715
• Every family has an Instant Alert Account already set-up with the home number as the contact number. To set your preferences on how to be notified of school closings/announcements (text, email, home or cell number), please go to https://instantalert.honeywell.com/InstantAlert/Login.aspx?MyScreenWidth=2560. You will need to create a username and password (if you’ve never logged into Instant Alert before). Once logged in, you can add phone numbers and set preferences as you wish. Anytime you change a phone number, please log in to Instant Alert and update that information so you don’t miss important school notifications.
• If you need help with any of the above, please contact Shari at 701-439-2287. She’d be happy to help!
With the increase in "screen-time" for students of all ages, it is important to keep a good monitor on what kids are doing. It is important for kids to learn proper online etiquette and behaviors to remain safe. One of the great things about the Internet is the abundance of educational materials available to kids. Take some time to visit our school website, or ask a teacher if there are apps and websites they use to help support instruction in the classroom. These games can be a great way for parents and kids to study together, and can lead to conversations about how to use the Internet in a responsible and safe manner. I am impressed with how our teachers and school have embraced technology, and there are many awesome things going on inside the walls of Wyndmere Public School!

Counselor’s Corner Parents and students: Check out msorgaard.weebly.com or scan the QR code below for the latest scholarships in our area, ACT test information, and student opportunities. The website is the best place to start when you have questions, I work hard to keep information up to date and available for students in the district.
What to do in January?: Those seniors who have narrowed down their postsecondary interests may need to send out applications to a couple schools or Job Service. Some colleges will be determining scholarship availability this winter, so students need to get those applications in! Students can apply for housing at many schools now. Students should look at the website of their college for school specific scholarships. FAFSA Applications should be completed as soon as possible for students looking at taking out loans to assist with school. All of the scholarships that come to me are posted on my website and can be accessed at any time.
Summer Opportunities: I know it is early to start thinking about the upcoming summer, but opportunities have already opened for student registration.
- Students who have completed grades 6,7, and 8 can sign up to attend Scrubs Academy at UND June 25-28. If your middle school student is interested in a medical career, this experience could be invaluable for helping them narrow their career interests. Visit ruralhealth.und.edu/scrubsacademy for more information, registrations are due February 15th.
-Current Sophomores can apply to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar at Bismarck State College this summer from June 1-June 3. You can find more information about this experience and register at HOBY.org
Statewide Testing: March 20th all juniors in the state of ND will be taking either the ACT or the WorkKeys test. In order to prepare for the ACT test, I have provided resources on my website under the “Testing” tab. I love the app Play2Prep that students can download and get 20 free practice questions a day to increase their skills! You can find the app in the Apple or Google Play store. Also, all students have access to a test prep program called Testive through RUReadyND. If your student needs assistance with logging into their account, contact Ms. Orgaard.

HELP YOUR CHILD READ AT HOME
THE SWEET SPOT Find books that interest your child AND are at his/her reading level.
5 FINGER RULE Pick a page. Any page. Have your kiddo read it. Put up a finger for each word he/she stumbles over.
**************************
0-1 Fingers: May be too easy 2-3 Fingers: May be just right 4-5 Fingers: May be too difficult
JUST TALK ABOUT IT
Research shows that YOU are the secret ingredient to your child’s academic success!! And, it’s easy. READ to them. READ with them. Listen to them READ. Students who read every day for as little as twenty minutes get better grades than those who don’t. A child who reads alone is learning. But when your child receives just a little extra support from you, magic can happen!
Ask your child questions about what they are reading. The questions are not meant to “check up” on them but
to explore their understanding.
It is ALWAYS okay to say, “Sound It out.”
Here are a few more tips of the trade!
IS YOUR CHILD STUCK?
“Break the word up into parts. Can you find any pieces that you can pronounce? Put them together.”
“Think about the story. What word would make sense right now? Do the pictures give you a clue?”
“Skip over the word and keep reading. Go back to the beginning and read the sentence again.”
FLUENCY When your child reads out loud, it should sound as if he/she were just talking with you.
TIPS ON
* Read the words to your child withexpression. Have them reread it after you.
* Take turns reading longer text. Modelhow the words should sound.

ASK... What do you think will happen next?
ASK... What was the most exciting part?
ASK... How does the main character change?
ASK... How was the problem solved?
ASK... Were you wondering about anything as you read?
ASK... What do you think ____ means?
ASK... What does this story remind you of?
