How many mes have you either heard or said that this January? And second to that greeng, how many mes did you think about what new year’s resoluons you would like to make? These two go hand in hand. First is to consider what would realiscally make the new year happy? If this is more than just an empty greeng, what would have to happen to make the coming year beer than the last? Or what changes might there be to make a beer future? Having decided that, the next step would be to make some concrete plans to make it happen. Here is the rub. Most oſten resoluons don’t go beyond January, it seems. I suspect that is be- cause we either don’t take them seriously or fail to plan how to make them reality. For instance, you might resolve to loose weight, and who doesn’t? Specifically how much weight? Let’s say 25 pounds. So you step on the scale and note your present weight and make a note of it, subtracng 25 to find out what your desired weight would be. But wait a minute! Is 25 pound weight loss something that you would be able to do? Or is it too ambious. Yes, it is not exaggerated, and you figure you should be able to do it. Then you decide you want to lose it by July. This all sounds good, but it will never happen if you don’t keep the goal in mind, make a plan as to how you are going to do it, and sck to the plan. It would also be helpful if you would step on the scale occasionally to chart your progress. [connued on page 2]

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

How many times have you either heard or said that this January? And second to that greeting, how many times did you think about what new year’s resolutions you would like to make? These two go hand in hand. First is to consider what would realistically make the new year happy? If this is more than just an empty greeting, what would have to happen to make the coming year better than the last? Or what changes might there be to make a better future? Having decided that, the next step would be to make some concrete plans to make it happen. Here is the rub. Most often resolutions don’t go beyond January, it seems. I suspect that is be-cause we either don’t take them seriously or fail to plan how to make them reality. For instance, you might resolve to loose weight, and who doesn’t? Specifically how much weight? Let’s say 25 pounds. So you step on the scale and note your present weight and make a note of it, subtracting 25 to find out what your desired weight would be. But wait a minute! Is 25 pound weight loss something that you would be able to do? Or is it too ambitious. Yes, it is not exaggerated, and you figure you should be able to do it. Then you decide you want to lose it by July. This all sounds good, but it will never happen if you don’t keep the goal in mind, make a plan as to how you are going to do it, and stick to the plan. [Pastor’s page continued] It’s really not so different with churches, including St Paul’s. Often we move along doing what we always do with no thought about what needs to be done. If you were to make res-olutions for our congregation, what things would you change, knowing that change always brings anxiety. What things would you put in place for the future? What things would you initiate to address the needs of the world around us? Realistically, one or two actions at any one time would be enough to aim for; specifically what would you hope to achieve? Are those aims something that are actually possible? When Do you hope to achieve them? Then a good plan would be essential. What would you do when? Who would be involved? Would there be a cost? Now you are ready to launch! If you are wondering if this is our intention for the new year, you are correct. Watch for de-velopments and plan to be involved. We have a mission to be the Church in the world. Let us resolve to be faithful to our mission! Happy New Year! Pastor Paul
