Wyndham Hills Residents: Fall is in the air. Time for football, tailgates, crisp walks in the morning; ah, my favorite time of year. While the temperatures this summer have actually been pleasant when compared to last summer, I did however tire of keeping my raincoat within arm’s reach and my umbrella becoming a permanent appendage… Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate with our plans for our WHILLS Cinco de Mayo celebration and our annual neighborhood summer cookout. While we have not gotten together as group in quite some time, your Board has been busy. The Beautification Committee led by Mark Pollack met with Bryant Poole of the City of Sandy Springs (COSS) regarding placement of our entrance sign at the corner of River Springs and Brandon Mill in the right-of-way. We will be working with a landscape architect regarding ideas and will collaborate with COSS and Andrew Heyward who is the homeowner of the affected lot where the sign will be placed. Continuing the line of thought regarding beautification, I encourage you to check out the Abernathy park website at http://www.sandyspringsga.org/ City-Departments/Public-Works/Capital-Improvement-Projects/T-0002. There you will find the project description, project plans, renderings of the “playable art,” and design plans. I am particularly thrilled with the rate of neighbors signing up for Nextdoor.com. Alarm Registration

This is a free service that Sandy Springs subscribes to that allows citizens across the U.S. to create a Safety Profile for their household that includes any information they want 911 to have in the event of an emergency. When anyone dials 911 from a phone (including cell phones) associated with their Safety Profile, their profile is immediately displayed for the 911 operator. In an emergency, it is imperative for 911 to have details that could impact police and ambulance response times. When you dial 911 today the information received by the 911 call center can be limited based on the type of phone you are calling on. Smart 911 is a national service and anytime you dial 911 across the country and your call is answered by a

911 center offering Smart 911 your profile will be available.

Sign up for free at www.smart911.com.

All monitored alarm systems in Sandy Springs are required to be registered with the City on October 1, 2013. To register your residential or commercial alarm system go online at www.crywolf.us/

sandyspringsga or call 1-855-725-7101.

The registration requirement is part of a newly passed City ordinance to reduce the number of false alarms in

the City.

“More than 80 percent of all false alarms are caused by user error. Make sure you and those who will activate

the alarm are properly educated on the system’s operation from your alarm company. If you do set your

alarm off accidentally, disarm your system as soon as possible and give your alarm monitoring station the

necessary password and ID number to have the 9-1-1 call canceled.” (http://www.sandyspringsga.org/

Safety ~ Gene Jordan Soon, we will have our “Neighborhood Watch” signs installed. However, this is only the first step in the process of assuring that Wyndham Hills is not seen as an attractive neighborhood to the “Bad Guys.” A few steps you may take: Cars are popular targets, especially if the doors are unlocked and valuable items inside are clearly visible – telephones, laptops, etc. Please be sure your cars are locked, even if they are in your garage. If you leave home for a weekend or for any extended period of time, make sure your lights and radio and/or TVs are on a timer, and that your newspapers and mail are temporarily halted or picked up by a neighbor each day. A “Beware of Dog” sign is also a good deterrent and the good old fashioned watchful eyes of your neighbors can be very helpful. Unfamiliar vehicles parked on the streets in the neighborhood (particularly unmarked white vans) should elicit a 911 call immediately to request that the police be sent to check it out. Good guys won’t mind, but bad guys will not welcome the attention! Also, if unfamiliar sales people come to your door, do not open the door but immediately call 911! Our neighborhood has a No Solicitation policy. Note: Be sure to turn off your water when you leave for more than a couple of days to prevent water leakage from washing machines, ice machines or refrigerators. This can cause serious water damage to floors.

We have heard your concerns about the current speed conditions throughout the neighborhood. The speed limit is set to 25 mph. Please model responsible driving habits to neighbors and teenage drivers by slowing down your speed and coming to

a complete stop at all marked stop signs.

Be considerate and watchful of your neighbors walking and their children at play. Wyndham Hills is a beautiful neighborhood and we want everyone to feel safe as they walk, bike, exercise, or play!

Sandy Spring Zip Codes Sandy Springs has 4 zip codes: 30327, 30328, 30350 and 30342. We share these zip codes with surround-ing areas so they default to “Atlanta, GA.” There are many issues arising from a shared zip code. Later this year, the U.S. Postal Service will be asking Sandy Springs businesses and residents, via a mailed survey, to

vote YES or No on changing the default Preferred Last Line in its database to Sandy Springs.

Public Information meeting: “U.S. Postal Service Default City Change Open House” December 8, 6-8:00 pm & January 24, 2012, 10:00 a.m., at Sandy Springs City Hall Council Chambers

Why Vote Yes? Sandy Springs should be a default postal city

Ensure $2.50 paid from each monthly telephone bill supports 911 services

No need to change address

Sales tax is 7% and is lower than Atlanta’s rate.

Zip codes will remain the same

Safety Tips for ‘Trick or Treating’ According to statistics, twice as many children are killed while walking on Halloween

than any other day of the year. Here are a few tips to keep kids happy and healthy on Halloween. ⇒ Make sure costumes are “flame resistant” and the right size to prevent trips and falls. Masks obstruct a child’s vision.

⇒ Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

⇒ Use non-toxic face paint and makeup. Most isn't FDA-approved and could trigger allergic reactions.

(Always test first on a small patch of skin.) Remove it before bedtime to avoid skin/eye irritation.

⇒ Children under the age of 15 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. ⇒ Always walk in groups on sidewalks or paths. Do not enter homes. ⇒ Examine all candy treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Only go to houses you know and trust. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

The recent weather and storms this year have taken a toll on the beautiful trees in our neighborhood; causing considerable damage. It is a good idea to take inventory on the trees around your home. Contact a licensed arborist (tree expert) to examine and report on the health of the trees in your yard. You’ll be grateful and so will your neighbor! You can also contact Sandy Springs Arborists to answer any questions you may have about trees or refer you to a licensed arborist; call the Citizen Response Center for more information at 770-730-5600. A few tips: ⇒ Some trees have a short life expectancy. If your mature tree begins to drop limbs on a reg-ular basis, it may be a structural problem that warrants attention.

⇒ Changes in your trees, such as pines with brown needles or Oaks without leaves in the summer may be signs that a tree is dead or dying.

⇒ Call a professional. Select an arborist who is an ISA Certified Arborist and is qualified in tree risk assessment.

Lost Corner Nature Preserve “The City of Sandy Springs, The Sandy Springs Conservancy and Friends of Lost Corner received a substantial grant from the Department of Natural Resources to put trails in at Lost Corner so visitors can explore the 24 acres of natural beauty. The City recently put out an RFP for bids to design and install the trails. The City and SSC are currently reviewing the bids. We hope they will

be completed by the spring of 2014.”

Recent warm winters have been the cause for a surplus population growth of copperhead snakes. Here are the facts you need to know: They are most active April through late October. Copperheads are “social snakes,” meaning they hibernate with other snakes and often return to the same den each year. Male copperheads are aggressive during spring (Feb.-May) and autumn (Aug. –Oct.) mating seasons. They are considered mature at 4 years (2 ft. in length) and can reproduce. They prefer forested hillsides, streams, or low brush to make homes and sun bathe. These snakes can live up to 18 years and are poisonous.

Tips for How To Keep Your Home Safe: *Clean up around yards, remove all trash. *Use mulch to limit snakes hiding places and keep it weed free *Wear thick boots, gloves, and pants when lifting logs or other debris

Snake Bites: Immobilize the bitten area above the heart and stay calm to slow the poison from pumping through your system. Call 911 and GO straight to the ER via ambulance! If a pet has been bitten, immediately take to a veterinary hospital. Do not apply ice or try to suck out the poison. Contact your vet for more info on snake bite symptoms.

Wyndham Wildlife Report

Bird Sanctuary Wyndham hills has a plethora of winged-friends for any birds enthusiast. We are home to a variety of owls, hawks, other small birds. For a listing and photography of common Atlanta birds, visit http://www.fernbank.edu/Birding/common_birds.htm

How to attract birds to your yard *Provide nest boxes for birds as well as bats (bats help control the mosquito population) *Plant Azalea, Bee balm, Canna, Daylily, Geranium, Hibiscus, Impatiens, Lantana, Trumpet Creeper, to name a few to attract hummingbirds. *trees and shrubs such as Black Cherry , Blueberry , Elderberry , Flowering Dogwood , Loblolly Pine, Mulberry , Passionflower , Persimmon, ,Redbud , Red Cedar , Wax-myrtle, Wild Plum , Willow Oak are good for their fruit and shelter for wildlife

To prevent window collisions, predation and the spread of disease follow these

tips when feeding birds

*Use Black oil sunflower and white millet seeds (Avoid mixed seed to reduce what birds will throw out).

*Position feeders at least 10 feet away. This permits birds to easily escape most predators and keeps squirrels away from feeders.

*Place feeders at different levels. Some birds prefer to feed on the ground, while others like to be

raised. Seed on the ground may lead to mold and make birds sick.
