CYJ at the Yankees

Sunday afternoon, April 28th, 40 alumni and some of their family members attended a luncheon on the Rooftop Deck of Yankee Stadium along with a Yankees Game. Daled 2000 and Daled 2002 came out strong in numbers but we were still represented by many generations. We even had Ina Botvin Rosenthal(1949-1953). She wrote to me afterwards: “It was so good to be with other YJ’ers, no matter what their ages or years at camp. I never expected to have such fun!”

What is it? A movement dedicated to encouraging and inspiring kindness wherever & whenever possible.

How did you get the idea? The idea came to me in 2011 while thinking about the risks to teens associated with Facebook and other social media platforms and the ever prevalent news stories about

bullying.

Why now? An unexpected tragedy, The Boston Marathon bombings, compelled me to finally move forward.

How can we help? “like” my FB page HERE and go to our website to purchase a Choose To Be Nice t-shirt. And please, spread the word!

This  summer’s  Maccabiah  theme  was  the  Founders  of  CYJ!    Marcy  Kornreich  (Co-‐Director  of  CYJ)  was  doing  some  research  on  Lou  Brown  and  called  his  son  Murray’s  house.    She  spoke  to  his  wife  Edie,  who  also  went  to  CYJ,  and  was  hosting  a  luncheon  for  a  group  of  her  CYJ  friends  from  the  1940’s.    I  was  lucky  enough  to  be  invited!

(standing  left  to  right)  Harriet  Giss  Bern  (’48-‐’56);  Jodie  Gould  Diamand  (met  her  husband  Dick  at  CYJ  in  1946);  Honey  Midman  Stollman  (’48-‐’60);  Eleanor  Midman  Lewis  (’45-‐’54);  Joan  Jacobs  Brown  (’50-‐’53);  Murray  Brown  (Head  of  Waterfront  ’46);  (sitting)  Vivian  Orodenker  Kolodny  (’44-‐’46)  whose  husband  was  older  and  helped  to  actually  build  the  camp!;  and  our  lovely  hostess,  Edie  Giss  Brown  (’48-‐56).

I  learned  about  the  girls  living  in  tents  on  the  far  side  of  current  boys  area;  campers  taking  hebrew  classes  in  the  morning;  and  how  CYJ  friendships  are  timeless!

1960’SPhyllis Geller Shulman D’64 writes, “I am thrilled that my granddaughter will attend CYJ next summer as a 9 year old as the 3rd generation.  L'Dor V'Dor. “

1970’SMargie (Chebot(ariov)) Apfelbaum D’76 in lieu of children has adopted an impossibly cute puppy named Louie. He’s part rat terrier/Australian cattle dog. He was born on Marathon Monday (4/15/13) which seems to give people around here some solace that life was born even on that terrible day. Although he can’t be a CYJ camper he does have lots of doggy ruach and has already learned to not eat until Motzi has been recited.

1980’SDanny Kern D’80 lives in Israel and writes, “My oldest daughter got married last September.  She was all of 19+.  She is doing fine.  She and her musician hubby live in Jerusalem in a small apartment.”

DALED 84Leslie Klaidman I used to live right outside of Boston in Brookline, but I bought a condo in Concord(MA, not NH) so I have been living there for the

past six years. I have worked at the same company for 14 years. I have been at American Tower Corporation as the Manager of Customer Accounting after working for almost every radio station in Boston in their business departments. I also keep busy volunteering for the sorority I joined in college. I have served Alpha Epsilon Phi in many roles and I just started my third year as National President of the organization. There are a few AEPhis who work at CYJ so my different worlds have definitely collided! Between work and sorority, I have not had time to settle down and get married. I do have a special man in my life who puts up with my crazy hours and endless travel, so that is all that I can ask for.So great to hear how everyone is doing…keep the updates coming!

Sandra Harrisburg Serbin It so great to hear from everyone again! I am married and am living in Scarborough, Maine with my husband Drew and two girls, Ava(6 1/2) and Lexi (4 1/2). I own a boutique(women's clothing) in Portland's old port section. I've been doing this for about 16 years now and love what I do.My girls are too young for YJ but could be a possibility for the future. My eldest (Ava) just started Hebrew school this year and is really enjoying that. I hope everyone has a happy new year and if anyone's ever in Portland

please stop by to say hi. Julie Kahan Simone I Love reading everyone's updates and seeing how everyone is doing! The summers spent at YJ were the best summers growing up. I am married with 2 boys - Zachary is 11 and in 6th grade (yes he is in Jr. High) and Tyler is 10 and in 4th. My boys are 14months apart, but not planned that way - should have been 16 months, but my younger one couldn't wait to meet the family. I am living in Hampton, NH. We spend our summers following my oldest around to baseball games (his team has done fantastic) and going to the beach. Haven't sent my kids to camp. They love spending their summer at home and going to the beach. Paul - we drove by TelNoar on our way to a Tournament in Hampstead. My husband, who is Catholic, and didn't go to camp, looked over and said look at all those kids. Then I saw the sign and told him about how we used to go their for sports and how I had friends who went to that camp. Did drive by YJ when I was in college and got the same feeling I used to when I went for the first day - butterflies in my stomach but so excited! I work from home as a consultant for the company I worked for before having the boys and also sub in their schools. Would love to get together with anyone that is local to NH!!

Justin Hoffman Congratulations to everyone on their families. I've never been married and absolutely love what I do for a living. I play records for the sweet, god fearing, mitzvah loving people of Las Vegas. I work for some of the hotels and get to travel the world. I’m incredibly lucky and grateful. Best summers of my life. Would be fun to reconnect so please let me know if you find yourself in SF!

She has been to so many fabulous countries and has done so many great things, but “it would be nice to finally settle down soon.”

Susan (Bornstein)Abraham recently moved to Needham, MA with her husband (Andrew) and their two

children. Their daughter Barrie is 6 and their son Brayden will be 2 this fall. She works in Boston at Fidelity Investments. They are in the Cape most weekends in the summer and welcome visitors.

Jodi Silverman now lives in Florida with her 8 year old son Evan. She is an IT Project Manager and a Program Leader at Landmark Education. She spends most of her time training and developing leaders and empowering people to live extraordinary lives. She is trying to get her son into the second session of CYJ this year! “I would be so thrilled to have him go there.”

Jodi (Cohen) Daniels & Ross Daniels represent Daled '86 in the camp couples category. They’ll be married 16 years this summer and they have two boys, Michael (12) and Andrew (10). They moved to Holliston, MA 4 years ago and live in a great family neighborhood that feels a lot like camp, which probably has something to do with living on the same street as her brother Craig Cohen D’88 and his wife Rachel (their kids are at YJ for the first time this summer) as well as Marni (Wiadro)D’88 and Jason Israel D’89, along with a bunch of other neighborhood friends who

seem to have a YJ or other Jewish geography connection. Ross has been working at Cisco Systems for the past 14 years doing technology marketing, and Jodi left the high-tech marketing world a long time ago and is home with the boys. Both boys are attending their second summer at Camp JORI in Rhode Island (where they actually bumped into the Jaffee family last year and where YJ's Rachel (Mersky) Woda D’88 is now the assistant director), and they are thrilled for them to have a Jewish overnight camp experience.

Joy Goldberg Jenner lives in Coral Springs, FL. She is married with 2 kids. Her son is 12 and her daughter is 9. She met her husband in Boston and they have lived in sunny FL for 14 yrs. She does not miss the cold at all! Joy is married to a non Jew, so he does not "get" the whole YJ thing, but at some point she would love to get her daughter there. Her son plays baseball all summer so for him it is out. She works for a telecommunications company and has been in that industry since getting out of college. It's stressful but she really enjoy it. She writes, “It's great to hear how everyone is doing! My best childhood memories are of YJ and all of you!”

Barbara Platt D’66 (after receiving an e-mail this summer from the Alumni Association, writes me the following e-mail)

The timing of this email is so ironic! I was in my car with my husband yesterday, on a long drive and Ira Glass, from This American Life, was doing a radio show on NPR about camp people v non-camp people and how non-camp people will NEVER get the kind of experience camp people have. There do not seem to be words, in our vernacular, that can actually replicate the true nature of the experience. The understatement of this century and the last. Exciting? (Ha! During Macabiah, I would venture to say, I experienced more of a pure adrenalin rush then with any other experience in my life with the POSSIBLE exception of childbirth. Note, I said POSSIBLE!) Emotional? (Ha! Waiting for Barbie Bass' bus to arrive the first day of camp, from Long Island, and suddenly hearing somebody in Hadar Ohel yell - with the first sighting - IT'S HERE! - well, my wedding was pretty emotional but....in the same category as Barbie Bass' bus? I'm not goin' there.) Life-changing? (Ha! Some counselor who had gone to the same camp for 12 years was asked how camp was life-changing - in what way he a different person then he would have been had he not gone to camp. Now this was a very well-educated, articulate man, who had no trouble answering previous questions with great expression and enthusiasm. But, try as he might, words utterly failed him. He stammered. He stuttered. He cleared his throat. And finally, he said, with as much feeling as he could muster: I dunno. It just did.)

At the end of the program, at a girl's camp somewhere, they just let the recording instrument run and record a ceremony that took place during this camps' color wars . It was some ceremony letting the girls know who was selected team captains.

I was driving our car at the time and my husband was in the passenger seat. Every time he opened up his mouth to say a word.....I screamed SHHHHHHH!!! During the ceremony at this camp, you could hear the voices of the head counselors making the announcements but then all you heard was HYSTERICAL CRYING. Happy crying from the girls who were selected. Miserable, gut-wrenching, suicidal crying from the girls who weren't. This sobbing must have gone on for - fully - five, six, seven minutes of air time, and I kept thinking...anybody who is a NON-camper must have turned their dial a LONG time ago. For them, it would have been absolutely revoltingly obnoxious.

For me? I was delirious. Screaming with laughter, tears rolling down my cheeks. Pointing, hysterically, at the radio. Holding my sides. It was probably not a good idea that I was behind the steering wheel. That hysterical, out-of-control, blindingly painful, happy, miserable, over- the-top crying, brought back the best memories of my life.

We Remember the fun times...

Really  great  job  on  the  newsletter  and  all  the  other  alumni  stuff.    I  can  spend  hours  going  through  photos  and  yearbooks.  Thanks.    Jeffrey  Worob  D’84

I  was  Daled  '91.    I  recall  our  slogan  was  'we  are  awesome,  we  are  fun,  Daled  Daled  91!'.    All  of  the  girls  got  t-‐shirts  with  the  slogan  at  one  of  the  kiosks  in  the  old  Natick  Mall  before  we  went  to  camp  that  summer.    My  good  friend,  Jamie  Koplan,  told  me  about  the  reunion.    We  are  still  friends  after  all  these  years!    Deborah  Goodman  D’91

Just  a  quick  note  to  say  thank  you  for  organizing  the  event  last  night  (Boston  Alumni  Event  at  the  WinterGarden).  There  were  some  really  nice  touches  (cake,  M&Ms,  etc),  the  space  was  beautiful,  food  delicious  and  most  of  all  it  was  so,  so  good  to  see  everyone  after  so  many  years.  Reconnected  with  one  good  friend  of  the  past  in  particular  after  20  years  which  is  pretty  amazing….  It  was  much  appreciated  by  all.    Lara  King  Friedman  D’92

It  was  a  really  fun  night  (Daled  ’93  Alumni  Shabbat)  and  a  great  way  to  build  up  alumni  spirit.    I  think  that  holding  during  the  the  Friday  night  activities  was  a  fantastic  idea  as  we    were  able  to  sample  all  the  things  we  remembered  -‐  services,  dinner,  songs,  dancing,  etc.    The  tour  of  camp  was  really  fun  too  because  even  though  it  is  mostly  the  same,  it  certainly  looks  different  from  an  adult  perspective.    Thanks  for  organizing  this  fun  event  and  I  hope  it  continues  for  future  Daleds  to  enjoy!Laura  Glazer  Gebhardt  D’93
