Vision Statement
The Wylie East High School Choral Department would like to establish a rich tradition of musical
excellence based on high musical standards. Our commitment for the 2017-18 school year is to
become a visible choral music department, actively involving over 150 choral students in
consistent corporate and individual musical excellence.
Mission Statement
The WISD Choral Music Department will provide opportunities for each student to develop artistic
expression, individual responsibility, personal integrity, and a sense of community through the
teaching of lifetime musical skills. Students will have the opportunity to improve individual vocal
technique, music theory and sight-reading skills. Students will also learn challenging choral
literature in a variety of musical styles. Through an understanding of teamwork, each student
will learn the value of cooperative work to accomplish artistic objectives. Each individual choir
member is valuable to the WISD Choral program, and emphasis will be placed on continuing to
help them develop positive traits to enhance interpersonal skills.
Choir Objectives
• To provide aesthetic expression and outlets for creativity through music as a
performance ART.
• To develop an APPRECIATION of and exposure to different styles of music.
• To instill in each member the desire to SUCCEED in his/her endeavors.
• To develop the social and CHARACTER qualities of self-discipline, respect,
responsibility, honesty, integrity and accountability.
• To educate each member as to the importance of TEAMWORK and cooperation
in all facets of life.
• To REPRESENT WISD in school, community, and regional events.
• To be all that you can be, and be the BEST that you can be!
This handbook is designed to introduce you to the WISD Choral tradition of excellence and to
provide you with valuable information regarding policies, eligibility, uniforms, fees, fundraising,
trips and calendars. Throughout the school year, any additions or changes will be provided to the
student.
Please read this handbook carefully, sign the appropriate pages and return these to the choir
office by Friday, September 1, 2017.

Choir Rehearsals and Guidelines
All students are required to attend rehearsals and concerts. All rehearsals count as daily grade,
while concerts count as a major test grade. (See Grading Policy)
Students will NOT be excused from rehearsal, with the following exceptions:
• Doctor’s appointment with a doctor’s note for the director.
• Excused absence from school on the day of the rehearsal.
• School conflict (athletics, drill team, etc.) with prior written
notification (minimum 36 hours) to the director.
Students who miss rehearsal (for reasons other than those stated above) will receive the grade of
zero (0) for the rehearsal. This includes work, Driver’s Ed, and babysitting.
Students will NOT be excused from concerts, with the following exceptions:
• Excused absence from school on the day of the performance.
• School conflict (athletics, drill team, etc.) with prior written notification
(minimum 36 hours) to the director.
If a student misses a concert (for any reason) he/she must complete a make-up assignment. It is
the responsibility of the student to schedule the make-up assignment with the director, and it
must be completed within one week of the concert. Excused student absences can receive full
credit, while unexcused absences can only receive a maximum grade of 70. Failure to complete
the make-up assignment within the week of the event will result in a zero for a major grade.
Attendance and Eligibility
You must make every effort to be at school when you are supposed to be at school. You are
expected to attend class, extra rehearsals, and concerts. Success in choral music is contingent
upon the ability to rehearse with all members of the group. Please take ownership of your
contribution to your group. Everyone is vital to the success of the group they are assigned.
Wylie ISD will be following a nine-week grading period. During the first nine-week period
only, students can lose eligibility at six weeks and then again at nine weeks. Failing students
lose eligibility the following Friday after the one week grace period has been served. Students
may regain eligibility at the three-week or the six-week progress reporting times by passing ALL
classes with a 70 or above. The same one week grace period applies before a student’s
eligibility can be regained. If the student continues failing one or more classes, the ineligibility
continues until the end of the nine-week period. This rule DOES NOT prohibit the student from
participating in regularly scheduled rehearsals and concerts held on the WEHS campus.
Rehearsals and concerts ARE NOT extra-curricular; they are considered curricular and a vital
part of the choir curriculum. Any performance, where admission is charged or that is
competitive in design is considered extra-curricular.
5
Classroom Expectations and Behavior Management
The WISD Discipline Management plan will be utilized for all behavioral issues. Students will
observe the following classroom expectations at all times.
• NO GUM, FOOD, CANDY, OR DRINKS IN THE CHOIR ROOM!
• Come to class on time. Students are expected to be in their seats with
materials for class when the bell rings. Not being in your seat may result in
loss of daily points.
• Sit in your assigned seat at all times, unless asked to move.
• No personal items are allowed on the risers or at the student’s seat.
• Have your materials (music, folder, pencil) at each class/rehearsal.
• Check the board for important announcements, and keep up with the choir
calendar.
• Do not talk while others are singing. Study your own music instead!
• Put all materials away after each rehearsal or points will be deducted from
your daily grade.
• Respect yourself and all others in the classroom at all times.
• Do not enter the choir office or handle choir equipment without permission.
• Students will follow the WISD Student Code of Conduct.
No electronic devices will be allowed during class, rehearsals, or concerts. You are
to put them away in your backpacks/purses and turned off as you enter the
classroom/concert hall.
Concert Behavior
• Be on time with the necessary materials. Students not in their designated area at
the appointed time will be considered tardy and lose 20 grade points.
• Be in concert attire. Uniforms should be wrinkle free and clean for each
performance. A wrinkled or dirty uniform may keep you from performing.
If not properly attired, a student will not be allowed to perform and will
receive a zero for a major performance grade.
• Ladies – have hair and make-up fixed BEFORE you arrive. (Limit
hairspray).
• Have a professional attitude towards each performance – PRIDE!
• Each choir member is required to stay for the duration of the concert.
You may not leave after your choir is finished performing. If you leave a
concert early, points will be deducted from your major grade.
• You will sit with your choir during each concert. You may not sit with
friends or family, unless otherwise directed.
• Use the restroom before the concert – you will not be allowed to leave
your seat once the program has begun.
• There will be no whistling, yelling, etc. before, during, or after any choir
performance. This simply will not be tolerated. This is not a sporting
event or rock concert, so performance expectations are reserved to
enthusiastic applause. Your grade will be based in part on your
observance of appropriate concert etiquette.
6
WISD Choir Uniform Policy
A concert begins with appearance. Choir uniforms are to be worn with pride as they represent
the work done in the choir program. They are not intended to reflect personal style, rather
uniformity.
Each student issued a uniform is required to return the entire uniform at the end of the school
year for inventory and dry cleaning. The uniform maintenance cost is included in the yearly
choir fee. For repair, replacement fines, or unreturned uniform, a hold will be placed on all
academic records. A replacement cost for damaged or lost uniforms will be assessed for the
cost of the item. Any garment that requires additional cleaning throughout the year should be
done by a professional dry cleaner. This cost of dry cleaning is the responsibility of the student.
DRESSES:
Ladies in all choirs will wear school-owned concert attire. These dresses can be maintained
easily. Students are to take full responsibility for their uniform during the school year. Any
obvious abuse or damage to the dress will result in a fine to repair or replace the garment. Each
dress has a number identifying the garment checked out to the student by their signature.
Failure to return the same dress will result in a replacement fine for the item. If there is need for
a dress change, it must be dealt with through the choir director or Choir Uniform Parent.
• Hem length – Students are responsible for having their dress professionally hemmed.
The dress should just touch the top of the students’ feet. Please do not repair any hem
length with sewing tape, masking tape or staples as it will damage the uniform. Also,
please do not cut the fabric.
• Shoes – Should be black, comfortable, and yet dressy enough for eveningwear. No flip-
flops, sandals, boots or sneakers will be allowed for any performance. Heals should not
be more than 2” since this adds risk to a student tripping or becoming too tired due to the
pressure placed on the feet. If shoes are not appropriate for concert, the student will not
be allowed to perform on stage.
• Hair/Jewelry – No jewelry may be worn inside the dress neckline. Very small earrings
may be worn. Hair is to be worn up or down so long as it is back behind the shoulders,
providing a visible shoulder line. We want to see your expressive face to its fullest. Do
not use perfume or heavy hair spray while styling hair, as this causes respiratory
problems for some people.
TUXEDO SHIRT/VEST/PANTS:
All men will be issued a tux according to uniform style of the campus. These uniforms are to be
worn for choir events only. Proper care of these garments is expected. Any damage or obvious
abuse of the garment will result in a fine to repair or replace. Make certain the uniform is hung
up to “air out” after each performance so moisture does not create a problem. The uniforms are
numbered, so, the uniform checked out to the student, by their signature, is the one to be
returned. Any changes in uniform must go through your director. We will make every effort to
fit students with the available outfits. However, it may be necessary for the student to have
professional alterations made to the outfit, which will be at the expense of the student.
7
Grading Policy
Daily grades – 40%
Choir is a participation/performance-based class. If all expectations are met during the
class period (participation, cooperation, materials), the student will receive a 100 for the
daily grade. Factors that may contribute to a lower grade include (but not limited to)
lack of participation, inappropriate singing posture or failure to use hand signs, disruptive
behavior, forgetting to bring folder/music/pencil, and talking while other sections are
rehearsing. Usually, one daily grade will be taken each week. However, multiple
grades may be taken during a week. Mandatory before/after school rehearsals are also
counted as daily grades as they are curricular based and an extension of the classroom.
Test grades – 60%
Tests may include sight-reading, ear-training, and written assessments. Students can
expect at least two major grades per nine weeks, including at least one sight-reading
assessment. Every performance is a major grade. Please keep in mind that a
performance is the culmination of many weeks of preparation and hard work for all choir
members! Missing wardrobe items, tardies and inappropriate behavior during a concert
can negatively impact a performance and a student’s concert grade.
Field Trips
Each choir member will ride to and from all events on his/her assigned bus, when bus travel is
required. Exceptions must be cleared WELL IN ADVANCE with a written note from parents.
All students participating in field trips must have a Field Trip Permission form and Medical
Release Form (found in this packet) on file in the choir office. Choir members will be expected
to adhere to school board policies concerning the riding of buses. School dress code applies to
all field trips!
Financial Requirements for Choir
The following is a list of things that you will need to participate successfully in the High School
Choir program. Make checks or money orders payable to RACBC (Raider Area Choir Booster
Club). On the memo line put student's name and what the money is for. Money should be
placed in an envelope with student name and what the student is paying for clearly marked on
the envelope. Students will sign a money log sheet verifying the amount turned in. If the
money in the envelope does not add up to the signed sheet, the student will be asked about the
discrepancy. The following are student-paid opportunities that will come available during the
year:
• Repertoire and sight-reading music. Any student who loses their music or sight-reading
book/music will be assessed the replacement cost of the item. (Covered by $75 Choir Fee).
• Uniform rental, binder, dry cleaning, choir picture and choir T-Shirt. (Covered by $75 Choir
Fee).
• Special choir picture packages may be available. Student paid at time of event. TBA
• Competing in Region Choir auditions and Solo Competition is optional, but encouraged. Student
paid at time of event.
.
***ALL INITIAL FEES ARE DUE AS OUTLINED BY THE DIRECTOR***

Fundraising
Since funding for the Arts continues to erode, it has become necessary for programs to raise funds
to supplement those provided by the state and local school district. Students are expected to
participate in choir fundraising in order to maintain the highest level of program quality.
Each HS Choral department has a student activity account. This account includes, but is not
limited to, choir uniform fees, choir pictures, special events, trips, or anything else considered
appropriate for student activities. This account is under the direct supervision of the Head Choir
Director and monitored by campus financial secretary, Principal, and policies of Wylie
Independent School District.
Wylie East HS Choir will operate using the Raider Area Choir Booster Club. When a student
participates in a choir-related fundraiser, they are agreeing to place their funds into the RACBC
along with other students. Typically, fundraisers yield students 40-50% profit of the total sales
(each company profit varies).
Though we try to assist students with the funds they have submitted, there should be no
“guaranteed expectation” every dollar they contribute will be available to them. Students may
only use these funds towards choir related expenses should the funds be available.
Recording
The use of recording equipment (audio/video) and photography will be part of the
promotional and instructional process of choir. Unless otherwise notified, all students will
be allowed to be recorded or photographed.
Choir Achievement Awards
In an effort to recognize the outstanding efforts of highly motivated students in the Choir
program, the following award program is being implemented. All members of the Choral
Department have the opportunity to “letter” in choir each year they participate in the program.
A high school student may only receive one jacket during their high school attendance. Please
note the various levels of achievement available to each student. The accumulation of
participation points, tracked by each student, will distinguish them on campus and in the
community. Those who meet the basic requirements, and already have a jacket from another
organization, will receive bars indicating the years they have lettered in choir as vital members of
the Choir. Distinguished point recipients will receive a silver/gold pin for that distinction.
All jacket points are to be submitted by Feb. 20, 2018 in order to receive the award at the choir
banquet and awards ceremony. All other points submitted after Feb. 20, 2018 will be forwarded
to the following school year and awards earned will be given in the spring of 2018.

Choir Individual and Group Pictures
Individual and group choir pictures will be taken, in uniform, during class and after school on the
date announced. Students should bring their uniform to the choir room the morning of the day
they will be photographed. Each student has the option of purchasing picture packages from the
order form distributed in class. You do not have to purchase a package to be in the group
picture.
TMEA All State Choir Auditions
One of the prides of Texas is the TMEA All-State Choir. In order to make this elite choir, you
must first, earn a place in the All-Region Choir. Students who wish to audition for All-Region
Choir must work diligently on the audition music they are given in August. Many students
attend camps during the summer to help them prepare. Students can also purchase the music
and practice CD through his/her director. You will be required to learn certain pieces of music,
and sight-read an 8-measure melody. You will audition before a panel of five judges who do
not see you, and you will not see them. You will be judged not only on knowing the music, but
also on musicality, intonation, diction, breathing, etc. Sight-reading is 20% of your audition and
should be practiced. Learning tracks will be made available. All audition dates must be
cleared for your participation. If you advance, you are EXPECTED to compete at the
next level.
If you plan to audition, you must attend sectional rehearsals with your director. They will be
held outside of class time. There will also be a required “hearing” in order to be entered into the
audition process. Check the choir room for your assigned day and sign up times. Do not come
to sectionals expecting to be taught the music. This time is to be spent perfecting the music.
You are expected to work with your practice CD/mp3 at home, with your voice teacher, and
participate in sectionals. Interested students should talk with their director for additional
information on dates and expectations.
Solo & Ensemble Contest
You may choose to enter a solo or small ensemble for contest on February 10, 2018. Songs are
selected from a UIL Prescribed list. The entry fee for this contest is due by Jan. 26, 2018. Solo
entries are $10.00, and ensemble fee are $3.00 per ensemble member. Once the director
receives the commitment form and the entry fee is paid, you will be given a copy of your music
and a rehearsal CD for home study. Your director will help you polish your music, but will not
teach it to you. You must be eligible to participate in this contest. The entry fee is non-
refundable in the event you do not or cannot participate. The accompanist fee is $25.00, and is
to be paid directly to your accompanist at your first rehearsal. Students may be expected to
“sing-off” their solo and/or ensemble by February 2, 2018 in order to be placed on the contest
roster and allowed to perform at the contest.

WISD Private Voice Program
WISD High School Choir program offers a private voice program on campus during classes.
Students will leave class for a brief lesson, or take after school lessons as times fill. Specific
information regarding price, policies and procedures for the program can be found at the end of
this handbook. All fees and necessary forms will be submitted to the private teacher as per their
instructions. Openings for the program are on a first come basis, so students interested in the
program should sign up early.
WEHS Choir Trip
A trip to Disney World is being planned for both the WEHS Choir and Theatre Departments.
Spots on the trip will be available on a first come, first served basis. The dates of the trip are
Thursday, March 8 through Monday, March 12, 2018. Students and accompanying chaperones
are expected to pay their own trip fees. Students may fundraise to help pay their trip cost, but

regarding random student drug testing.
Because my child participates in effected extracurricular activities, including prom, and/or receives a
parking permit allowing him/her to park his/her vehicle on District property during the school day, I
understand that my child is subject to random drug testing and might be required to provide a urine
sample for drug analysis. I consent to such testing as part of the District’s drug testing policy.
I also understand that while my child cannot be compelled to produce a specimen, providing a specimen
when requested by the District is a condition of my child’s continuing to participate in effected
extracurricular activities, including prom, and/or continuing the privilege of driving/parking on District
property.
I understand that if a test of my child’s specimen reveals an unexplained presence of a drug, the District
may withdraw driving/parking privileges and the privilege of participating in effected extracurricular
activities, including prom. I understand that refusal to submit to a test will have the same consequence
as if my child had tested positive.
I authorize the school administrators, coaches, and extracurricular sponsors of the District to
communicate and share information with each other regarding my child’s drug test results both orally and
in writing. The District may also communicate such results at any administrative proceeding regarding
my child’s drug test. I understand Wylie ISD follows all HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.

Confidentiality Agreement
Wylie ISD Volunteers
As a volunteer in the Wylie Independent School district, an individual may have access to confidential
student information. This information may relate to general items such as address and telephone number
or to medical conditions, behavior issues and academic records. A volunteer may also observe situations
that he/she does not immediately understand. Seizures, aggressive behavior or unacceptable language
are only a few examples. This type of information about specific students cannot be shared with anyone
outside of the school.
Comments, concerns, and opinions regarding individual students and staff members should be discussed
with the principal. Questions about discipline and behavior should also be shared with the principal, but
not with other parents or volunteers. The school district welcomes the dedicated individuals who come
into the schools to volunteer their time and talent to assist the students and staff. However, idle
comments made in the community about a student can be extremely harmful to that child. If the
confidential protection afforded to students and staff members is broken, the volunteer will no longer be
allowed to work at that school for the remainder of the school year (or semester.) The district expects the
same professional concern regarding confidential information from volunteers as it does of its employees.
In order to be in compliance with WISD child protection guidelines, parent volunteers must fill out and
submit the online volunteer application. You can find it under the “Parents & Students” tab, in the
“Resources” section, or just copy and paste the following site:
https://web.wylieisd.net/BackgroundCheck/BkgroudCkForm.aspx
I understand the confidentiality agreement as outlined above and agree to adhere to it as a volunteer with
the Wylie ISD.

Wylie Music Enrichment Program Guidelines for Participation
Supplemental Music Lessons
Supplemental music lessons are offered as enrichment to classroom instruction and are designed to utilize
the broad scope of characteristic literature available for every instrument or voice. Rather than stress the
singular goal of competition preparation, the emphasis instead is on nurturing the independent thinking
and individual performance skills critical to the development of the maturing musician. The focus is on
acquiring refined levels of sight-reading and technical proficiency in tandem with the attainment of an
advanced sense of musical instinct and interpretation.
Participation
Although optional, participation in the supplemental lesson program is encouraged and available to all
students. Those who elect not to participate in supplemental lessons will not be penalized in grading,
chair placement, or band/choir assignment.
Enrollment
Enrollment in the supplemental music lesson program is on a voluntary basis.
Termination of lessons by the student, supplemental music teacher, or band/choir director will be
accomplished by written notice to the student or teacher and the band/choir director.
Supplemental music teachers are assigned as requested by the student, if possible. In some
cases, individual schedules will not allow the requested teacher.
Questions concerning assignment of supplemental music teachers should be directed to your
student’s band/choir director.
Questions concerning lesson dates and times, or number of lessons taught, should be directed to
your student’s supplemental music teacher.
Student’s Responsibility to the Private Teacher
Prepare each lesson fully
Follow attendance rules
Provide documentation and exhibit evidence of practice
Supply materials required by instructor
Participate in all activities required as a condition of study
Private Teacher’s Responsibility to the Student
Provide each student a quality private lesson which will contribute positively to the development
and continual improvement of the student as a musician and performer.
Instill an appreciation for each instrument(s)/vocal solo repertoire.
Cultivate the desire within each student to make music a lifelong activity.
Exhibit professional characteristics and demeanor in attitude, appearance, behavior and
responsibility in every activity germane to private lesson instruction.
21
Lesson Location and Scheduling
Lessons during the day will be taught in the school the student attends.
The band/choir director of each school, in cooperation with the private instructor, will
schedule lessons for the students who desire to participate.
It is recommended that the student receive a lesson each week.
The cost of each lesson for the 2017-2018 school year is $20.00.
The Director of Fine Arts determines the amount charged for lessons annually.
Lessons may be scheduled during the student’s band/choir period and before or after school.
No lessons will be scheduled during non-music classes.
It will be the responsibility of the student to notify his/her supplemental music instructor at
least twenty-four hours in advance if a lesson is to be canceled unless a serious emergency
arises. This courtesy is also the responsibility of the supplemental music instructor if he/she
must cancel a lesson.
The band/choir director will aid the student in advising the supplemental music teacher of
concerts, programs, holidays, etc., which would result in any interruption of the regular
lesson schedule.
Financial Considerations
Payment will be made directly from the student to the private lesson teacher at the beginning of every
month so as to pay one month in advance. Checks should be made payable to the individual private
lesson teacher.
