ENTRY CRITERIA

We offer a variety of courses at different levels:

1. AS/A Level courses (level 3)2. BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 courses3. OCR Nationals (Level 3)4. VRQ Level 2 and 3 courses5. GCSE resits in Mathematics and English (Level 2)

Level 3 courses are the traditional route to university. At A Level, each subject is split into AS Level (Year 12) and A2 Level (Year 13). Most universities base their offers to students on passes in three Level 3 courses and we therefore encourage students to complete three courses over the 2 year period.

BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 courses are assessed through coursework assignments throughout the course and have no examination at present. This may be subject to alteration as government changes are made to the curriculum.

The OCR Nationals are two year courses which are assessed throughout the duration.

The VRQ Level 2 and 3 courses are mainly assessed through coursework but some units are online tests. They are one or two year courses.

For entry onto Level 3 courses, we look for students to achieve a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language and Mathematics. Each subject may also ask for additional entry requirements (check individual course pull out for details).

However, there may be exceptions for those student who are near to this or have demonstrated high levels of commitment.

SIXTH FORM ENTRY CRITERIA

It is expected that all students embarking upon Level 3 courses will have achieved at least a minimum entry criteria of 5 grades C or above at GCSE. Previous experience makes it clear that this is the minimum requirement for success at AS and A2 Levels. In addition, individual subjects may have additional requirements as listed below. Analysis of individual subjects shows that the subject entry criteria are an essential element in guiding students to the most appropriate courses for their ability. It is the expectation that where students have studied a subject at GCSE they will have obtained at least a grade C to study further.

What does the course involve?Students will develop a broad knowledge of Art and Design through the exploration of contextual studies, materials and techniques. Media explored include drawing, painting, collage, digital photography, ceramics, print making, conceptual and sculpture. All students will exhibit their work at the end of year show.

How will I be assessed?

Weekly progress checks with feedback and individually set targets.

Course Information – BEAUTY

IntroductionLevel 2/3 Diploma with City and Guilds

Entry requirementsA good level of literacy is ideal to be able to complete the coursework involved in this subject, together with a desire to do well and remain motivated. Good attendance and the ability to work with external clients are essential. Places are limited and therefore assessments will be carried out to judge the student’s ability.

What does the course involve?This is direct training for a career in Beauty Therapy. Training is undertaken in the school’s newly designed commercial beauty salon. The provision ranges from Level 2 to Level 3.

Level 2 gives you a range of skills in order to provide Beauty Therapy treatments.Level 3 modules are tailored to your career aspirations and provide the skills needed for advanced Beauty Therapy treatments.

How will I be assessed?Students will be assessed on a continuous basis within the school’s commercial salon and will develop a portfolio of evidence which supports their learning, assessment and progression. In addition to this, students will have written assignments to complete.

What qualification will I get?C&G Level 2 - Beauty Therapy and Level 3 Diploma in Body and Spa therapy.

IntroductionAQA A Level Chemistry 2420

Entry requirementsMinimum of grade A/B in Science GCSE and Additional Science GCSE or minimum of grade A/B in Chemistry GCSE. At least a grade C in Maths GCSE will also be needed.

What does the course involve?For the AS assessment, students explore the fundamental principles that form the basis of chemistry such as atomic structure, bonding, periodicity and an introduction to organic chemistry. Students also look at the applications of these principles.

Entry requirementsGrade C in GCSE English Language

What does the course involve?All students wanting to study this qualification will need to be enthusiastic and committed to working with children.Students will study the following mandatory units: Child Development, Play and Learning and Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills. They will also complete one optional unit and will have to carry out 50 hours of mandatory work placement in a child care setting.

How will I be assessed?At least 2 units will be covered in Year 12, one of which leads to an externally assessed examination whilst the other is coursework based.

Alongside another coursework unit in Year 13 there is also a Controlled Assessment unit where students will have an allocated amount of time to complete the work which will be marked externally.

What qualification will I get?For all units, Pass, Merit or Distinction grades can be achieved. A Distinction*

grade is possible through successful completion of all units up to Distinction level.

If you achieve a Pass in all three units, this is equivalent to an E grade at AS and A Level. If you achieve a Merit overall, this is equivalent to a C grade at AS and A Level and is therefore required by most university courses. If you achieve a Distinction grade overall, this is equivalent to a grade A at AS and A Level.

Course Information – DANCE

IntroductionBTEC Level 3 Certificate and Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance)

Entry requirementsGrade C in English Language. If students have not completed a relevant GCSE or BTEC course in Dance or Performing Arts but express a strong interest and commitment and/or have taken part in productions in or out of school, this could be sufficient experience.

What does the course involve?The course is entirely coursework based and pupils must complete the required amount of units over two years depending on the level of qualification they aim to do.

The mandatory units are Dance Performance and Performing to an Audience, which involve students producing a full scale performance to a professional standard.

How will I be assessed?

To achieve the certificate, students must complete three units and six units for the subsidiary diploma. You are assessed completely through coursework which is externally verified.

What qualification will I get?On completion of the three units taught in Year 12, students gain the certificate, which is equivalent to an AS qualification. Three further units are taught in Year 13 which make the subsidiary diploma and which is equivalent to an A level.

What can the course lead on to?This course provides opportunities to visit performance venues to see productions, to do workshops with professionals and to perform in professional venues using professional equipment. You will be working on the skills you need for a career in the industry, be it performance or teaching in the public or private sector. Course Information - ENGINEERING

IntroductionThe course will extend the specialist work-related focus of the BTEC Level 2 Certificate and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. It offers greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units. It is equivalent to one GCE A Level.

Entry requirementsA grade A/B in GCSE DT, GCSE or Level 2 Engineering or Core and Additional Science.A grade B in GCSE Mathematics.

What does the course involve?The engineering sector continues to suffer from a skills gap and needs to keep up with rapidly developing technologies. These qualifications in Engineering have been designed to give new entrants to the engineering sector the knowledge and skills needed to meet the needs of modern mechanical engineering industries.In year 12 students are likely to study the following units:Health and Safety in the WorkplaceElectrical and Electronic PrinciplesComputer Aided Design

How will I be assessed?

All units are assessed internally through coursework. Some criteria will involve taking written tests under exam conditions.

What qualification will I get?Level 3 Certificate in Engineering if you complete Year 12 successfully.By continuing into Year 13 you can achieve a Level 3 Diploma broadly equivalent to one A level.

This means it is a highly respected route for those who wish to move into employment in the sector, either directly or following further study. UCAS has reviewed the qualification to assess its value for access to higher education, and has allocated UCAS points. In addition, a number of

universities have confirmed that this diploma fulfils their entry requirements when achieved alongside other qualifications.

What does the course involve?The aims of this course are to foster the enjoyment and discussion of English Literature along with the increased understanding of what literature involves. The emphasis is on getting to know a wide range of texts in depth by close reading and at the same time students are encouraged to think about the contexts in which these texts can be read.

Course Information – EXTENDED PROJECT

IntroductionLevel 3 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Entry requirementsA good level of literacy is required to be able to complete the coursework involved in this subject as well as a willingness to learn and good attendance. Grade C in GCSE English is preferred but not essential.

What does the course involve?Extended Project is a stand-alone qualification. It gives students the opportunity to expand their learning in a current field of study, or they can explore their own personal interests and aspirations. It allows students to investigate something that interests them and go on to produce a single piece of work that presents their findings. At level 3, this can take the

form of a dissertation, an investigation, a performance or an artefact. The Project encourages students to develop a broad spectrum of skills, such as independent learning; initiative; project management; planning; research; problem-solving and presentation skills. These skills will be used over and over again in the worlds of work and higher education. In the world of higher education, having a Project qualification differentiates students from their peers and demonstrates motivation for their intended course of study.

How will I be assessed?There are no exams; the course is 100% internally assessed and externally moderated.

Course Information - FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION

IntroductionWJEC Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition(1 year course)

Entry requirementsStudents should have at least a grade C in GCSE Catering and at least a grade C or equivalent in Science. You will need to be an independent learner and be prepared to work outside of lesson time to meet deadlines. You need to demonstrate an aptitude, confidence and independence in the kitchen.This course is all about developing life skills, whether you are cooking for yourself or adapting a diet plan for someone with specific nutritional demands.

What does the course involve?The present course covers things that will help you to achieve a wealth of knowledge about food science and nutrition. You will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food, as well as practical skills about cooking and preparing food. The content may alter subject to government changes.

The course is one year long and you will complete one unit in year 12 to be awarded a BTEC Certificate at Level 3.

What does the course involve?The BTEC Nationals in Public Services have been developed in the Public Services sector to give education and training to: allow students to achieve a nationally

recognised Level 3 vocationally specific qualification;

give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the public services sector, eg. police, army, fire service etc;

to facilitate continued learning at degree level at university.

How will I be assessed?

100% coursework using a modular structure. All internally assessed – no examination. Your teacher will set assignments throughout your course for you to complete. These may take the form of projects where you research, plan, prepare, make and evaluate a piece of work or activity, case studies or presentation. Each assignment will have

assessment and grading criteria to show what you must do in order to achieve a pass, merit or distinction grade.

What qualification will I get?If you achieve a pass in all three units, this is equivalent to an E grade at AS Level. If you achieve a merit overall, this is equivalent to a C grade at AS Level and, therefore, is required by most university courses. If you achieve a distinction grade overall, this is equivalent to a grade A at AS Level. For the Subsidiary Diploma, which will consist of six units of work, a pass is equivalent to an E grade at A Level, a merit at C and a Distinction is equivalent to an A grade at A Level.

IntroductionBTEC National Extended Certificate.Students learn through application, and a range of assessment including examinations, coursework and a controlled assessment. Entry requirementsStudents must achieve a grade C in English Language and GCSE science or a Merit at BTEC Applied Science Level 2.

What does the course involve?

This is a vocational or work-related qualification, so students will have the opportunity to gain specific knowledge, understanding and skills. The entire course covers the fundamentals of science and practical scientific techniques as well as specialist units. What qualification will I get?A Pass in all units of the subsidiary diploma is equivalent to an E grade at A level, in terms of UCAS points. IntroductionBTEC Level 3 Art and Design, Fashion and Clothing Subsidiary Diploma

Entry requirementsStudents need to have previously studied GCSE textiles or BTEC Art and Design and have a natural flair for fashion. The course involves learning through experimentation and evaluation so pupils need to be organised, confident and self-motivated, showing an ability to work in their own style to complete set tasks.

What does the course involve?This is a purely practical course where pupils work on a variety of units over the course of two years giving them a wide range of skills presented in a portfolio form. Six units take you through a range of designing and making techniques, creating a clear pathway to degree level fashion, fashion media, marketing, styling and technology.

The course comprises four mandatory units which cover all the basic Art and Design skills and two further fashion based units. At the end of every year students take part in the annual fashion showcase which also counts

towards their coursework portfolio.
