We owe it to the designers that have created some of the most beautiful garments that have graced our catwalks, giving us mere mortals inspiration on how to express ourselves through the fashion we choose to wear.
Fashion weeks around the globe are followed religiously by many, with some of the most innovative trends and designs to be noted down in fashion history. For those emerging designers entering the clique, the pressure is high on delivering something fresh and inspiring to the world that is Fashion.
Upcoming designers such as Aminaka Wilmont and Lamija Suljevic are a breath of fresh air to the industry. With Aminaka Wilmont’s sharp androgynous tailoring, utilising fabrics that refl ect a contrast of both beauty and brutality for the modern day woman.
Whereas designer Lamija Suljevic allows her childhood to inspire her creativity, projecting this through the delicate fabrics she uses for her unique doll like designs. Her clothes are infused with elegance and playfulness, with a hint of avant-garde details. The new designer is sure to appeal to the feminine side of all women regurgitating happy memories, with a contrast of sophistication and beauty. Lamija’s work is already pushing the boundaries between art and luxurious fashion.
Jewellery designers Yunus and Eliza have all the characteristics that place them at the top of their fi elds, both conceptually and in terms of quality. Their collection is inspired by fairytale and will most likely appeal to those with an individual style.
Planning to show their collection at London Fashion Week for the fi rst time this year, the Welsh Collective have been collated to show the highest quality of Welsh fashion talent.
With these emerging designers in the mix, the variety of fashion this year means there is something for everyone.

Excitingly, this year will be no different with the launch of the Welsh Designer Collective. Supported by The Welsh Assembly Government and headed by CEO Judie Thomas, the show aims to unearth and champion four of the fi nest in Welsh fashion talent.
Among the fashion pack is Elinor Franklin, recently graduated from the West Wales School of the Arts. Passionate about British style, the young designer aspires to create clothing that empowers the female form. Uniting an unorthodox mix of leather, silk and natural fabrics, Franklin crafts elegant eveningwear that is both progressive and inspirational.
Second of the design collective is Emma Griffi ths. Motivated by a fusion of amour, the 80’s and Roman Catholic Churches, Griffi ths is producing alluring garments that create beautiful silhouettes. Based in London Griffi ths has worked with, and been inspired by the talents of both Alexander McQueen and Boudicca. With sewing embedded in her blood, the unique style of Emma Griffi ths has caught the attention of Topshop,
with a collection developed specifi cally for the brand.
The third of the Welsh clique is collaboration between Melin Tregwynt and Josie Beckett. With her ‘making a statement style’ ethos, Josie Beckett has been causing commotion among fashionistas in Topshop, ASOS and Spittlefi elds. Diverse and original, Beckett has chosen to mix the traditional knits of Melin Tregwynt with her own quirky style. Tweed just got fabulous.
Completing the fashion quad is Ffl ur Cadwaladr Owen. Currently working in-house for Karen Millen, the inspiring designer has already caused an optimistic stir among the fashion elite. Merging creativity with craftsmanship, the creations embody the young designers rustic background in rural Wales. With designs that bring narrative to life, Ffl ur uses elaborate and contradicting embellishments of Ram skulls and Swarovski crystals.
The Welsh Designer Collective will take place at 11.30am in the historic Bloomsbury Ballrooms in the heart of London, on Sunday 21st February 2010.
It’s routine for the fashion industry to select the ‘next big thing’. Those with exquisite taste handpick the next set of designers set for critical acclaim.

Fanatical about shape and silhouette, Aminaka Wilmont designs, colours, prints and styles representing a truly unique sense of serenity, purity and naturalness.
The design duo Maki Aminaka Lofvander and Marcus Wilmont met working for eccentric designer Robert Cary-Williams. They studied at Royal College of Art, Central Saint Martins and The University of Boras. Their shared attraction to everything Avante Garde lay the foundation of the label.
Androgynous, sharp and innovative shapes emphasize the hard tailoring, juxtaposed by the soft draping and effortless complexity of the luxurious silk and washed leathers in which the label exemplifi es.
The Aminaka Wilmont woman is strong and progressive, forward thinking yet appreciative of traditional craftsmanship. Self-confi dent, serene and sensual, with pure unconventional beauty.
This season the designers were inspired by Cormac McCarthy’s novel ‘The Road’ to create the innovative new collection ‘Strife’. Visions and images of inner confl ict also inspired the collection, with the aesthetics
of the Assemblage Art Movement and especially the early work of Robert Rauschenberg.
Aminaka Wilmont draws inspiration from compassionate sources, and incorporates their love of texture in the pieces they skillfully craft. Strife, Autumn/Winter 2010 illustrates the concept of debris and fl otsam of life. Fringe existence, quiet violence and refugees. They present sumptuous fabrics lined with digital prints and teamed with Crepe de Chine; which are natural dyes, complimented with a bleak colour palette. To help visualize and quantify the inspiration Aminaka Wilmont mixed soft silks with merino wool knit, combining the draping and digital prints with cutting edge techniques.
Experimental pattern cutting helped to execute leather jackets incorporating textural detail. Completing the ethereal look is Justin Smith Esquire’s extrovert Millinery, crafted beautifully in a collaborative effort perfectly suited to Aminaka Wilmont’s signature svelte style, and in keeping with the brand ethos.

The delicately sculpted collection whispers stories of secrets and passions, myth, the beauty of nature and the dark abyss of reality.
Yunus Ascott and Eliza Higginbottom united in 2007, working in one of the last remaining foundries in London casting metals. Both having a passion for art and sculpture they collaborated on a mutual interest in the creation of jewellery art pieces. Drawing on a foundation of fi ne art, classic sculpture and restoration, the process of creation begins with simplistic drawings, models and stories which are brought to life through the hand sculpture of each piece, employing ancient lost wax processes and centrifugal casting methods, sometimes using reworked and restored ancient sculptures. The immaculate attention to detail is owed to the use of such traditional methods, combined with contemporary techniques.
The Sculpture To Be Worn, Spring/Summer 2010 collection encompasses metamorphosis and myth, with the beauty of nature, handmade from start to fi nish, no two pieces are the same. Telling tales, leading to an enchanted world of chaos, decadence, magic and splendour with specially sculpted rings and pendants of ancient and mythical fi gures including Aphrodite and Daphne, both symbols of love in Greek mythology, as well as an ancient Egyptian scarab. History is a at the heart of the collection, and each one is a miniature work of art, which can be displayed on made to order marble based plinths or stands when not being worn: ‘We believe sculptures should be worn, and not left on the shelf’.
Sculpture To Be Worn can be viewed at www.yunus-eliza.co.uk. Let the new collection take you by the hand through openings, cracks and windows, to those who listen, whisper you its story.
An exquisite labour of love, Yunus and Eliza’s bespoke Sculpture To Be Worn Spring/Summer 2010 collection is enchanting.
