During recent years, specifications have been prepared to cover many types of precast concrete pipe. The mostgenerally used are issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials, commonly known as ASTM. A

number of governmental agencies also have specifications which are similar to the ASTM designations.

The user of concrete pipe is assured of a uniform and reliable product when he designates that the product shallbe made to the requirements of a nationally accepted specification. Cretex pipe is made in accordance with

applicable specifications or the Cretex engineering department can design pipe to meet most special conditions.

ASTM Specifications are designated by two sets of numbers, the first which identifies the products and thesecond which indicates the year of publication. Thus the full number for the first specification listed below mightbe ASTM C76-85 which would indicate that the latest revision was made in 1985.

The following ASTM specifications are published. Comparable American Association of State Highway andTransportation Officials (AASHTO) Specifications numbers are also listed.

ASTM C76 (AASHTO M170 )Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe

This specification covers circular reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes and storm water and for the construction of culverts.

The standard strength classes (D-Load requirements) per ASTM C76 specification are as follows:

Although the standard sizes and classes of pipe will be satisfactory for the majority of installations, some jobs willrequire pipe that has larger diameter, a higher strength or both than is covered by ASTM C76 tables. Pipe of allsizes with strengths of more than twice those shown in ASTM C76 tables have been designed, manufactured, tested, and successfully installed.

There may be occasions when for economical or other reasons an intermediate class, alternate reinforcing, orotherwise different circular pipe than shown in ASTM C76 may be desired. Such pipe can be specified underASTM C655.

ASTM C361Reinforced Concrete Low-Head Pressure Pipe

This specification covers circular reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the construction of pressurepipelines with low internal hydrostatic heads generally not exceeding 125 feet.
