Bump in the Road for B.O.B. the Bookmobile

B.O.B., our Library’s Bookmobile, will be off the road this fall. We hope to resume service early 2019. The retirement and resignation of two full librarians make it difficult to staff the bookmobile in addition to the Children’s and Information Desks. This is just a “bump in the road” for the Bookmobile. We are committed to getting it back in service as soon as possible. In fact, from information gathered through a number of recent focus groups and an online survey, our plans for the future include finding ways to increase bookmobile service. We were hoping to start working on that goal this year, but the timing of the resignations and the push for reduced spending will delay it for now. Library staff will work with our regular “customers” to provide substitute services needed during this period. The Library appreciates everyone’s patience as we make short and long term adjust-ments to this service. We know that many will miss seeing B.O.B on a monthly basis but we will keep engines in running order, and ready for its return.

Attorney Dyke Spear will discuss UFOs on Wednesday, September 5 at 7:00 pm. As a spokesperson and field investigator for the CT Chapter of MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) Attorney Dyke Spear is highly qualified to give an insightful analysis of the UFO phenomenon.

For the last 35 years Attorney Spear has inter-acted, researched, and conferenced with the lead-ing UFO researchers in the world. Much of the information he has learned is unknown to the general public and in-volves such astronauts as Gordon Cooper & Wally Schirra, abductee Travis Walton, and show business diva Eartha Kitt.

Medical Practices in the Civil War

Hamish Lutris will discuss the Medical Practices in the Civil War on Thursday, September 13 at 6:30 pm in the Griffin Room. Perhaps the most tragic aspect of the Civil War was the lack of medical knowledge of the time. Thousand died while advances were being made or were about to be discov-ered that would save soldiers only a few years after the war ended. This program sheds light on the medical practices of the war, helping to explain why so many soldiers would prefer to have gone

to battle through dysentery, wounds and sickness, rather than have to spend time on a regimental sick list. Hamish Lutris is an Associate Professor of History at Capital Communi-ty College in Hartford, Connecticut. He has worked in some of America’s premier natural and historical sites, leading hiking and historical programs. He has also lectured exten-sively in the United States, Europe, and Canada, presenting programs on wide-ranging historical topics, including Native

American history, the Civil War, Scientific His-tory, Social and Cul-tural history, World War I, World War II, and the American West. All are welcome to this free program cospon-sored by the Meriden Historical Society. Con-tact the Community Ser-vices Department at (203) 630-6349 or visit www.meridenlibrary.org and click on Events if you would like to re-serve a seat.

Local residents, public servants, business and civic leaders, and educa-tors are invited to come to the first of a series of free peace-making workshops, on the morning of Saturday, September 29th, in the Cook Room at the Meriden Public Library, starting at 9AM.

Registration is available at the library, and at smtrinity.org. The work-shop is being organized by South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church's Pastor John Blossom.

The morning workshop will cover breakthrough in-sights into how people of all kinds, in all situations,

can learn to "wage peace" - even in the middle of our "wars!" The workshop is based on non-religious materials that have helped thousands of people around the world to take a new perspective on how they view and manage potentially hurtful conflicts. After the morning work-shop, the workshop leader will be available in the Cook Room to help work-shop attendees practice peace-making skill for their real-life situations The core of the workshop is based on the book The Anatomy of Peace, by the Arbinger Institute, a non-religious research and training company that helps people to live more

productive and peaceful lives. The key concept of the book is that if we have "hearts at war," often our peacemaking efforts will fail - and our "wars" will continue. If we learn to have hearts that are peace, then we can learn to have good relationships - and, perhaps, even love - even with people who we treat as our enemies.

Coffee and light refresh-ments will be available. For more information, please contact Pastor John Blossom of South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church at [email protected] or 203.293.8511 tel/txt.

Be the Peace!
