Architects Tiziano Vudafieri and ClaudioSaverino are known in fashion circles fordesigning concept stores for brands includingTod’s, Roger Vivier, Moschino, Emilio Pucci andJimmy Choo, but they are now leaving theirmark in Milan with a new restaurant and barcalled Pisacco. Positioned in the city’s artydistrict of Brera, on Via Solferino, the localeearns top marks on the design front, but alsoleverages the fame of Michelin-starred chefAndrea Berton, a partner in the venture, whopreviously headed the Trussardi restaurant inMilan.

There is nothing pretentious about the venue, with its easily accessible decor and linear, essential design. Since its opening this fall,Pisacco has already become a favorite of fashionand design types. The menu is streamlined, witha selection of traditional Italian dishes, fromMilanese risotto and spaghetti with tomato andbasil with buffalo milk mozzarella cream sauce,to the must-have tiramisu. The focus is on freshand seasonal ingredients, with limitedintervention. The added bonus is the value forprice equation — a point Saverino is quick topoint to.

“We are trying to reflect on the historicalmoment: what is in line with the times, what arepeople looking for during a crisis?” asksSaverino. “A nice place, good food, sophisticatedbut totally simple at the same time. Great qualityat the right price. It’s a must now, just as somany other restaurants are closing.”

While the bar and café are at street level, whereone of the main elements is a mural by artistGabriella Ciancimino, the restaurant on thelower ground overlooks a small garden, lit bynatural light that filters through large glasswindows. The restoration respects the originalstructure but has a modern, almost Nordic vibe.Hence the vaulted ceilings and boiseriecontrasting with contemporary artworks thatbelong to the owners; specially created tables inrough iron and cement, and handcraftedfurniture from Discipline, a new designtrademark established by Renato Preti, theformer chief executive officer of private equityfund Opera, which Bulgari formerly controlled.Discipline made its debut at Milan’s furnitureand design show Salone del Mobile in 2012.Light bulbs stem from “bouquets” of electricalwire from the Paris concept store Merci.

“We’ve made coasters with samples ofmaterials,” said Vudafieri, pointing to his and hispartners’ attention to sustainability and “natural, light and simple” guidelines. Every detail iscarefully mapped out by the architects, from thecutlery to the napkins.

Pisacco, which seats 100 guests, is the first venture of food.different, a food and wineconsultancy established by Vudafieri, Berton, hospitality manager Giovanni Fiorin and attorneyand food expert Diego Rigatti. Vudafieri and Saverino are currently working on a new storeconcept for luxury goods firm Delvaux and planning the opening of a wine bar in Milan, inaddition to similar projects in China.
