NETWORK LIFE

As we kick off 2014 …

Stephane Faggianelli is promoted to take on the broader role of regional president in our Europe/Middle East & Africa (EMEA) region.

Warm welcome to Martin Conneen who joins us as regional president for Wunderman APAC.

New regional leadership “As 2014 begins, I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt greetings for the season and appreciate you all for our accomplishments and achievements in the last few years. We have grown exponentially in terms of our size and structure, with 2013 witnessing a global change in the way we position ourselves. As we continue to invest in success, we aim to further solidify our offering to a new generation of marketers and their need for real-time consumer conversations. The emphasis has and should continue to be on our clients in order to show the Wunderman difference in digital, data & CRM. The recent changes in the regional team are steps towards strengthening our organization while not losing focus on growth and ambition. Nimesh Desai, Michel Mommejat and Krishnan Menon have been given new mandates to support us in making this happen. Bryce Whitwam in Shanghai has also been given an extended role to ensure we pool our capabilities together to bring world-class, creative ideas to completion. Remember the network is paramount. We may be best in our respective markets but we are better together. And that drive is what will take us to the top. As I pass the baton on to Martin Conneen and the regional team, I would like to thank one and all for your support and dedication to achieve what we have today. Here’s to an even better and bigger 2014!

- Stephane Faggianelli

CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT

Meet January’s Creative of the Month: Raymond Murphy

“From no age at all I could pick up a pencil and draw, but a special thanks goes to a Belfast upbringing for instilling an awareness of identity, association and community. I worked in illustration and graphic design in various jobs, but it wasn’t until I eventually left Ireland altogether and experienced a non-English-speaking environment in Japan, that the significance of language, and its expression, revealed itself. The fact that both the visual and the spoken, together, give form to culture and strengthens community has huge emotional resonance with me and has continued to be a cornerstone element in my creative approach ever since.

Ray’s Pick of the Month

Wunderman Indonesia has it for me in spades this month. They are taking advantage of great local character to capitalize on global assets to build rich experiences that have authentic appeal and foster real engagement. First place goes to the work for Nokia Lumia 1020. Getting the product endorsed by domestic talent in a way that is approachable and in the hands of the target is something that can normally prove difficult. However, here it’s easy to get in and play with the celebrities’ photos to your heart’s content, and then get that all important share. All the while it extolls the virtues of the product, with a ream of videos and photography, all of which are of the same authentic, no mess, universal tone and manner.

My name is Raymond Murphy and I’m an art director at

Wunderman International Tokyo. Right – let’s get to the

work!”

CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT

Work on Ford’s all-new Ecosport Discovery also stands out thanks to its youthful art and copy. Everything is driven from the verb and does well to project the concept of action. Getting to know your own city is a great way to celebrate local character, and touches a nerve with those who want to express something about where they’re from. Let’s face it, who doesn’t? I particularly like the graphics and typography thanks to their simplicity and consistency.

Definitely a worthy mention for the work behind Microsoft Office 365. It’s fairly normal to see promotional work geared toward students, however it makes all the difference that Microsoft are offering an internship. This real offering screams authenticity to the target audience, and by leveraging the social media fan-base to create conversation around 365 invests in the long-term, for the product and for the appeal of the company in general – well done!

Wunderman in China developed a little souvenir for our clients - Rattle-drum. The hand-shaped strings will pat the drum which looks like a horse’s ass. It’s a play on a Chinese phrase to “kick ass” - slap the horse. Great idea, Team China!

KNOWLEDGE & INTELLIGENCE

10 Trends that will Shape our World in 2014 and Beyond They are: IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES: Entertainment, narratives and brand experiences will become more immersive and altogether more enveloping in a bid to capture consumers’ imagination and attention. DO YOU SPEAK VISUAL?: We’re shifting to a visual vocabulary that relies on photos, emojis, video snippets and other imagery, largely supplanting the need for text. “Visual” is a new lingo that needs to be mastered. THE AGE OF IMPATIENCE: With the mainstreaming of the on-demand economy and our always-on culture, consumer expectations for speed and ease are rising exponentially. As businesses respond in kind, making the availability of their products and services more instant, impatience and impulsiveness will only continue to increase. MOBILE AS A GATEWAY TO OPPORTUNITY: In emerging markets, the mobile device is coming to represent a gateway to opportunity – helping people change their lives by giving them access to financial systems, new business tools, better health care, education and more. TELEPATHIC TECHNOLOGY: Thanks to the rise of brain-computer interfaces and emotion recognition technology, brands are getting more adept at understanding consumers’ minds and moods, and reacting accordingly in a very personalized way. THE END OF ANONYMITY: Thanks to an array of new technologies and a growing drive to collect personal data, it’s becoming nearly impossible to remain unobserved and untracked by corporations and governments. As anonymity becomes more elusive, expect pushback from consumers and a growing paranoia around technologies and services that affect privacy.

In their ninth annual forecast, JWTIntelligence shares 10 key trends that will drive consumer mind-set and behavior for 2014 and beyond. These trends examine how consumers are both welcoming and resisting technology’s growing omnipresence and a result of quantitative and desk research conducted throughout the year.

Page 17: Wunderman APAC Newsletter - Issue 32

KNOWLEDGE & INTELLIGENCE

RAGING AGAINST THE MACHINE: As we move further into the digital age, we’re starting to both fear and resent technology, fretting about what’s been lost in our embrace of unprecedented change. We’ll put a higher value on all things that feel essentially human and seriously question (while not entirely resisting) technology’s siren call. REMIXING TRADITION: With social norms quickly changing and a new anything-goes attitude, people are mashing up cherished traditions with decidedly new ideas, creating their own recipes for what feels right. PROUDLY IMPERFECT: Imperfection and even outright ugliness – the quirky, the messy and the clearly flawed – are taking on new appeal in a world that’s become all too polished or mass-produced. The imperfect is coming to feel more authentic, and also more comforting and meaningful. MINDFUL LIVING: Consumers are developing a quasi-Zen desire to experience everything in a more present, conscious way. Once the domain of the spiritual set, mindful living is filtering into the mainstream, with more people drawn to the idea of shutting out distractions and focusing on the moment. Watch the video or the condensed report on slideshare. The full report can be purchased and download “10 Trends for 2014 and Beyond”.
