Spotlight on EducationMonday, September 12—Thursday, September 15
This special week of primetime programming features reports from today’s classrooms, examining how creativity and dedication to teaching all children, even the most challenging or at-risk students, makes a real difference in communities. It also underscores public media’s dedication to learning and the critical importance of convening a dialogue around education.
POV: All the DifferenceMonday, September 12, 9 p.m.
Accompany two African-Amer-ican teens from the South Side of Chicago on their journey to achieve their dream of graduat-ing from college.
FRONTLINE: A Subprime Education / The Education of OmarinaTuesday, September 13, 8 p.m.
FRONTLINE presents two films that build on its education reporting: “A Subprime Education,” a fresh look at the troubled for-profit college industry, examines reports of predatory behavior and fraud and the implosion of the education chain, Corinthian Colleges. “The Education of Omarina” shows how an innovative program to stem the high school drop-out crisis has affected one girl’s journey, from a public middle school in the Bronx to an elite New England private school, and now on to college.
TED TALKS: Education RevolutionTuesday, September 13, 9 p.m.
Explore innovative approaches to education with hosts Baratunde Thurston and Sara Ramirez. Speakers, including Anna Deavere Smith and Sal Khan, discuss the school-to-prison pipeline, the impact of micromanaging kids and transform-ing struggling students into scholars.
NOVA: School of the FutureWednesday, September 14, 8 p.m.
In a new age of information, rapid innovation and globalization, how can we prepare our children to compete? Discover how the new science of learning can help us reimagine the future of education for all children.
AT ISSUE – EDUCATIONThursday, Sept. 15, 8 p.m.
Host H Wayne Wilson is joined by Ben Schwarm, Deputy Executive Director, Illinois Association of School Boards; Dr. Mike Jacoby, Executive Director/CEO, Illinois Association of School Business Officials; and, Dr. Brent Clark, Executive Director, Illinois Association of School Administrators, for a discus-sion of K-12 education during this one-hour special.
PBS explores the unseen elements that structure our world in FORCES OF NATURE A four-part PBS & BBC co-production premieres September 14 at 7:00 p.m.
The forces that have kept the Earth on the move since it was formed billions of years ago are explored in FORCES OF NATURE. In each of the four episodes, the series illustrates how we experience Earth’s natural forces, in-cluding shape, elements, color and motion. Although we can’t immediately feel the motion of Earth’s fundamental forces, we witness the consequences, such as tidal bores surging through the Amazon rainforest or the intense and ruinous power of hurricanes.

PBS Kids “Measure Up!” App Encourages Kids and Parents to Play and Learn TogetherFree App Includes a Companion App for Parents and Caregivers to Support Learning
Parents, have you seen this app yet? It’s a winner! It was introduced by PBS in June, and it’s designed to help 3- to 5-year-olds build math skills and to help you support their learning. PBS KIDS Measure Up! focuses on building kids’ measure-ment skills through a combination of games, videos and activities from popular PBS KIDS’ series. The app also connects to a companion app with tools for parents and caregivers to track progress and find ideas for activities away from the screen.
“Given the overwhelming number of apps available, it’s often difficult for parents to find great educational content for their kids,” said Sara DeWitt, Vice President, PBS KIDS Digital. “PBS KIDS Measure Up! not only helps build math skills in a fun learning environment, it also lets parents track the skills in which their kids excel, and the skills where they may need more practice.”
In PBS KIDS Measure Up!, children can visit a world with characters from PBS KIDS’ series DINOSAUR TRAIN, PEG + CAT and SID THE SCIENCE KID. There, they explore concepts of length, width, capacity and weight while collecting rewards through a combination of games, videos and activities.
PBS KIDS Measure Up! is now available for free on iPad, as well as Android tablets in the Amazon App-store, and is coming soon to Google Play. PBS KIDS Super Vision is now available for free on iPhone and iPod touch, and Android mobile devices on Google Play.

Notes from the President & CEO
Moss Bresnahan, President and CEOTwitter: @MossILMedia
One of the most interesting aspects of public television is how it takes a subject and explores it from many different angles, providing a more global perspective of the topic. That thoughtful approach is on display this month as WTVP and PBS take a deep dive into educational issues.During the week of Sept. 12, both local and national primetime programming focuses on the importance of educational initia-tives. A complete list of the programs, their content and air times appears on page 3. The subject matter ranges from students strug-gling to make it through school to the troubled world of for-profit colleges to the success stories brought about by teachers who care enough to fight for better opportunities and brighter futures for their students.
Being well educated isn’t just important for our young people, it’s important for us all. The first step in the process is for us to explore stories like the ones featured during this week of programming, and be well informed. That’s why public television exists—to provide stories of significance and create a greater awareness of the world around us.

PBS schedules the perfect end to summer with a Labor Day Weekend “Downton Abbey” Marathon
Complete Downton Abbey schedule available on page 22
For those suffering from “Downton Abbey” withdrawal, missing their weekly dose of the joys and travails of the Crawley family and their servants, despair no longer. PBS has scheduled a binge-worthy Labor Day weekend marathon of all six seasons of the top PBS drama of all time, the most popular series in MASTERPIECE’s 45-year his-tory and one of the most-watched dramas on American television. Kicking off on Friday evening, September 2 and concluding on Monday, September 5, this round-the-clock celebration features every enthralling moment of the unforget-table series. Plump the cushions, pour the sherry and settle back into the world of the witty Dowager Countess and her “frenemy” Isobel, the Crawley sisters and their below stairs counterparts, for all the romance, intrigue, heartbreak and happiness “Downton” provides.
A runaway hit when it debuted on PBS in 2011, “Downton Abbey” — a Carnival/MASTERPIECE co-production — is widely credited with reigniting American viewers’ passion for British drama. Beloved cast members include Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Joanne Froggatt and more. With 59 Emmy® nominations, more than any other British show in Emmy® history, “Downton Abbey” is one of the most-honored series on television. It has won 12 Emmys®, three Golden Globes®, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Producers Guild Award and four BAFTAs.

The heat is on in British India. Indian Summers, Season 2 Julie Walters and a remarkable cast return for a second action-packed and passionate season Sundays, September 11 - October 2 & Oc-tober 16 - November 20 at 9pm on MASTERPIECE. (Preempted Oct. 9, Presidential Debate)
As a nation of 300 million vies for independence, India’s colonial rulers soldier on. MASTERPIECE continues its story of love, death, and unbridled ambition, set in British India’s exotic summer capital in the 1930s. Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a terrific melodrama with brains,” Indian Summers returns with Season 2, airing in ten enthrall-ing new episodes.
Viewers will recall that last season ends with colonial official Ralph Whelan (Lloyd-Hughes) deftly play-ing his hand to be the next Viceroy of India and engaged to American socialite Madeline Mathers (Olivia Grant). Learning that Madeline is penniless, he decides to marry her anyway since she impresses all the right people. However, Madeline doesn’t know that Ralph has a mixed-race son, Adam, by his former lover Jaya or that Ralph was complicit in hanging an innocent man for Jaya’s murder.
Enriching the new season is the dilemma faced by Aafrin’s sister Sooni (Aysha Kala), who wants to use her law degree to benefit the people but faces family pressure to submit to an arranged marriage. Fate intervenes to give her the choice of three very different suitors.
Of course, the big story is the inexorable push toward Indian inde-pendence, which is being promoted peacefully by Gandhi and less tem-perately by someone who promises “to blow them all up until it is raining hands and bloody feet!”

No one can resist Ross Poldark!Poldark, Season 2 on MASTERPIECEAidan Turner (The Hobbit) returns to WTVP as the ex-officer, class war-rior, lover, and mining entrepreneur, called by The New York Times “the noblest, hottest, most down-to-earth hero.” Poldark, Season 2 airs on MASTERPIECE in nine gripping new episodes, premiering Sunday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
Also back is co-star Eleanor Tomlin-son (Death Comes to Pemberley), playing Demelza, the miner’s daugh-ter who is Ross’ equal in passion, wit, and daring—which is, of course, why they marry.
New this season—or thrust into prominence from last—are Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love) as Caroline Penvenen, a flirtatious young heiress under the watchful eye of her rich uncle, Ray, played by John Nettles (Midsomer Murders); Luke Norris (Titanic) as earnest young doctor Dwight Enys, who only has time for his patients—and for Caroline; and Henry Garrett (Zero Dark Thirty) as Captain McNeil, Ross’ old comrade from the war, now hunting smugglers and an opportunity to woo a certain married lady.
Viewers of the first season will recall that Ross shocks his relatives and neighbors when he shows up from America, since all had presumed him dead. He then sets about upending everyone’s lives, becoming ensnared in a romantic web, but ultimately marrying Demelza. At the start of Season 2, Ross stands accused of murder and wrecking a ship, and it appears he is headed for the gallows. It’s just the first in a string of sus-penseful episodes every bit as precipi-tous as the steep cliffs of Cornwall.
