Wheaton Center for History hopes tolook forward in 2015, despite eviction

WHEATON – After morethan three decades, a Wheatoninstitution is hoping this yearproves better than the last.
The Wheaton Center forHistory was evicted from itsdowntown Front Street loca-tion in fall 2014 after gettingbehind in rent.
The nonprofit has morethan 47,000 items, PresidentAlberta Adamson said, andnow must hope the communi-ty that donated those piecescares enough to keep the cen-ter afloat.
“People in the communi-ty wanted a museum to pre-serve their history,” she said.“We did it for the community– we’ve always done it for thecommunity.”
Now, many of those itemsare in storage at the center’s re-maining building at 606 N. MainSt. or in the homes of donors.
Center members said the fi-nancial troubles began in 2009when the city cut its about$225,000 annual contributionto the nonprofit.
“I don’t think we were ex-pecting a total cutoff, maybe acut back ... but they whackedit off completely,” center Vice
Chairwoman Laurie Warfelsaid. “And I don’t think there’sanybody on that council whowould support bringing usback.”
City Manager Don Rose saidthe cut was mainly a financialdecision and part of about $3million in expenditures thecity eliminated that year.
Rose said the city also calledfor the center to evaluate otherfunding sources to stabilize itsrevenue stream – something itasked of Wheaton’s municipalband, library and more recent-ly the downtown association.The center never presented abusiness plan reflecting thatrequest, he said.
“They always had a largevision but were not attuned to
the reality of the money avail-able from the city and theycertainly weren’t successfulin getting a large following oroutside sources,” he said.
Adamson said the city’scontribution was about 30 to40 percent of the center’s annu-al budget at the time but thatit provided a degree of credi-bility. Once that backing wasgone, grants began to dry upand major donors pulled out.
Mayor Mike Gresk said heand other council memberswanted to see more auditedfinancial documents from thecenter, but Adamson said thenonprofit presented monthlyreports, an outside annual au-dit and other documentation.
Gresk didn’t rule out a fu-ture partnership, saying heknew Wheaton’s Park District,library and historic commis-sion offered to house parts ofthe center’s collection.
“In 12, 15, 20 years from now,nobody is going to rememberthis in terms of personalities– they are going to say, ‘Whereis the history?’” he said. “I seeit as a huge puzzle with lots ofmoving parts, and quite hon-estly, the ball is in the court ofthe Center for History.”
Adamson said she hopesthe center’s longstanding rep-
utation for quality will help itstay afloat as it looks for a newspace.
She said the center plansto overhaul its Board of Di-rectors with new membersto rebuild the organization’sinfrastructure. Historical in-terpreters and those versed insocial media are high on thepriority list as well. The centeralso is seeking partners to do-nate space and items for fund-raisers.
But the nonprofit can’tafford to fix the roof on itsMain Street building. Adam-son is the only full-time staffmember and hasn’t been paidin years. So far, the hunt fora Wheaton location has beenfruitless – Adamson said sheworries the organization willhave to take its collection else-where, despite its commitmentto Wheaton.
“We need to get people in-terested and enthusiastic inour community again,” shesaid. “These archives belongin Wheaton.”
Adamson also said shedoesn’t believe the city will re-turn its support to the centerin the near future.
“But will the communitysupport us? I don’t know,” she
said.

Improv studio bringing laughs, lessonsBy NATHAN LURZ
WHEATON – Next timeyou’re in downtown Wheatonlate on a Friday or Saturdaynight, don’t be surprised if youhear the sounds of laughter onFront Street.
Those chuckles are thework of the Westside ImprovStudio.
Created by longtime im-provisers Jeff Ash of Glen El-lyn and Brendon Culhane ofWheaton, the new studio ina small, underground roomat 123 W. Front St. is offeringtwice-weekly improv shows,as well as classes.
Both have proven to be a hitsince starting in December.
“It happened so organicallyand so quickly, I can’t even tellyou how amazed I’ve been,”Ash said.
When Ash moved to Du-Page County in late 2013 afterseveral years in Los Angeles,he thought his dream of start-ing an improv theater was allbut dead.
Then, six months ago hewas introduced to Culhane,who facilitates an improvgroup at Wheaton College.
T h e t w o b e c a m e f a s tfriends, and one day last fall,Ash said, he found the FrontStreet space and fell in love

later, the duo’s about 70-seatstudio was born.
Their mission is two-fold,Ash said.
“We both love to teach, andwe knew that was going to bekey in anything we did,” hesaid. “But we also want thisplace to be performance-driv-en and give opportunities forpeople to get stage time.”
The two offer a free sessionfor beginners Tuesday nightsand two different advancedclasses throughout the week.
“What we can teach you ishow to be a good improviser ...and take you where you’re atand sharpen your skills,” hesaid. “There are a lot of folkswho have been taught at a lotof the bigger theaters who arehere now working with us andreally enjoying it.”
One beginner student whostarted at one of the free class-es has already been slottedto be in a player’s workshopshow Jan. 17, Ash said.
To supplement their houseplayers, Westside has focusedon incorporating area improvgroups.
Ash said great content forlow prices will help them builda brand the community cantrust.
“I want them to get their $5worth,” he said. “I want thequality to be such that ... peo-ple [will] never be afraid to in-vest in our product.”
So far, this approach hasbeen successful – classes arefull and expanding fast, andboth of last weekend’s showswere at capacity. Ash also saidhe appreciates being in anenvironment like Wheaton,where family-friendly enter-tainment is encouraged.
“I looked at it as sort of anopportunity for us to promotea smart brand of comedy thatdoes not need to be dirty,” hesaid.
Downtown Wheaton As-sociation Executive DirectorPaula Barrington said live the-ater can have a broad appealand could draw people fromaround the area.
“It’s different, fun, sponta-neous and their ticket priceis very fair, so it’s somethingyou can work into an eveningout after having dinner down-
town,” she said.

When the sense of hearing isafected, it keenly afects the person.It is known that the potentialpsychological problems that arisefrom not hearing well are: Stress,
anxiety, anger, frustration, loweredself-esteem, distrust, paranoia,social withdrawal, insecurity, denial,inappropriate social behavior orresponses.
If a person is not hearing well andthey lack conidence to engagesocially, what is the solution? Correctthe hearing. “Hiding” the hearingproblem doesn’t fool anybody.Interpersonal relationships aresigniicantly afected when hearingdecreases. Here are some of the mostcommon statements patients makewhen their hearing is evaluated andasked what concerns them abouttheir hearing:
- I only have trouble hearing wherethere is noise.
- Certain people mumble so I can’tunderstand them.
- I hear ine when people face mewhen they are talking. It’s when theyturn away I can’t hear.
- My (signiicant other) has a sotvoice.

Sanguinetti formally re-signed Dec. 15, 2014, from herpost as a member of the Whea-ton City Council. The councilis in the process of selectinga temporary replacementfor her position, which willbe filled for the long term inabout three months after theApril election.
Rauner also will host aninaugural concert at 8:30 p.m.Monday night at the conven-tion center featuring countrysinger Toby Keith and bluesmusician Buddy Guy. Open-ing the show will be legis-lative band The Boat DrinkCaucus, featuring state Reps.Chad Hays, R-Catlin, andMike Tryon, R-Crystal Lake,and state Sen. Don Harmon,D-Oak Park. WHEATON – Local coffeeroaster and cafe River CityRoasters is hoping for somehelp living up to its motto of“Coffee, connection, commu-nity” during its Africa Partyfundraiser Friday.
Tickets are being sold tooffset costs for a February tripto Kenya and Uganda, whensome of the roaster’s ownersand operators intend to begina direct trade relationshipwith coffee farmers.
Co-owner Erich Goepel saidthe transition to direct trade,where the buyer pays thegrower the full price of the cof-fee, was something the roasterhas wanted to do since beforeopening its Wheaton locationmore than a year ago.
“It’s about getting highquality coffee and connectingpeople in Wheaton with thefarmers in Kenya and Uganda... and forming that communi-ty,” he said. “We can impactthis whole community overthere and have that connec-
tion through coffee and roast-ing.”
Direct trade practices gen-
erally give farmers more fortheir product than they re-ceive when selling through a
middle man to a large coffeebuyer, Goepel said.
If River City Roasters paid
$5 per pound for a certain typeof coffee, even the most so-cially responsible distributorwould take $1 or $2 for import-ing and compensation, saidManager Beth Fivecoat.

New Year’s Eve attic blaze

WHEATON – The WheatonFire Department responded toan attic fire late New Year’sEve, according to a news re-lease from the city.
Firefighters were dis-patched about 10:10 p.m. Dec.31, 2014, to a single-family resi-dence at 203 Secretariat Court,the release stated.
Crews brought the blaze un-der control within 20 minutes,
according to the release. Thehome was unoccupied at thetime of the fire and the inci-dent did not result in any in-juries. The Wheaton Building
Department did, however, de-clare the house uninhabitable.
A fire department inves-tigation is ongoing, WheatonFire Chief Bill Schultz said.The cause of the incident isundetermined and damage es-timates are not yet available.

SPRINGFIELD – Many years ago, I was a minimum-wageworker making $3.35 an hour writing obituaries for the Gales-burg Register-Mail. More than a few times during that collegesummer break I had an editor holler at me, “There is no ‘a’ incemetery!” But I learned how to meet deadlines, deal with thepublic and spell a bit better.
Most people I know havehad similar first-job expe-riences. They didn’t earn awhole lot, but they learnedenough to help them get abetter job down the road.
We could spend a lot oftime bemoaning the loss of low-paying positions to innovationor we can simply accept that businesses will seek the mostcost-effective solutions. That’s why talk of raising the state’sminimum wage is troubling.
While it will result in pay raises for some lucky individuals,it will result in fewer jobs for the state’s low-skill workers. Asthe cost of labor goes up, the demand will go down.
When I mentioned this economic principle to a friend, heasked, “Then, who will do the work if positions are eliminat-ed?” Look no further than McDonald’s for the answer.
According to a recent Malcolm Berko column, the fast-foodchain anticipates adding touch screens in 2,000 of its 15,000restaurants in 2015. Customers, rather than employees, will bethe ones pecking away at the touch screens and sending theirorders directly to the kitchen. According to the Berko analysis,this will result in the elimination of four to six employees perlocation, reducing labor costs by $110,000 per location.
Many of these fast food workers who would see their jobseliminated earn the minimum wage. Raising the minimumwage will accelerate the loss of these and other jobs.
Most folks earning minimum wage are either younger than 25or working part time, a 2012 study conducted by the Cato Institutefound. This runs contrary to the narrative of Gov. Pat Quinn andothers.
In November 2014, Quinn said, “Our minimum wage is $8.25.It is not enough for a mom, a dad or anyone to raise a family on.”
He’ll get no argument from me on that. But the Cato studyfound less than 5 percent of those earning minimum wage areheads of households. So raising the minimum wage will dolittle to help those trying to raise families and will do much tohurt young people trying to enter the workforce.
And, in this economy, that’s the last thing we want to do.

Starting today, more than160 comedy troupes will per-form 188 shows across eightdays as part of the ChicagoSketch Comedy Festival.
One of those groupsfeatures former Wheaton resi-dent Mike Movido, who, alongwith six other comedians,is putting on a video game-themed show, “The Book ofGenesis.”
Movido recently spokeabout his comedy, the showand his inspiration withWheaton Suburban Life re-porter Nathan Lurz.
Lurz: What brought you into
comedy?
Movido: Growing up, Ithink comedy has just alwaysbeen something that I loved.For most of my school years– elementary school untilhigh school, really – I wasactually always very shyand reserved. But when I gotto high school, I had a lot of
friends who were involvedwith theater and the speechteam and wanted to hang outwith my friends and decidedto audition. ...
I didn’t know that I wasthat funny, but I ended upgetting placed with one ofthe comedy events for speech
team, humorous duet acting,where you get a partner andare given an eight-minute cutof a comedic play or scriptand have to perform withoutany props except a table andtwo chairs. I competed withthat every weekend and I fellin love with it.
Lurz: What can you tell me about
‘The Book of Genesis?’
Movido: It’s a sketch reviewthat revolves around gaminghumor. I got involved withit during its first iterationover this past summer – afriend of mine ... put out somefeelers about finding a castfor a show he and his friendswanted to put together aboutvideo games with a lot ofnerd humor, which soundedlike it would be a lot of funand something I would reallyenjoy.
Now I think they’re excitedto have me come back and bea part of the process again.We’ve developed some newermaterial to merge with someof the older material from theprevious show.
Lurz: When doing lots of ref-
erential comedy, it can be hard to
keep the attention of an audience
member who isn’t familiar with the
material engaged. Is that something
you guys considered when crafting
the material?
Movido: Something I’m real-ly excited about is that we asa cast agreed to also tackle thetouchy issues in an approach-able way to the audience. ...Things like gender and raceissues.
One of the big topics we areaddressing in this iterationis Gamergate. We’re reallytrying to show all the sides ofthat and why it is such an im-portant issue and that it’s notreally about ethics in gamingjournalism, it’s really about

western suburbs could reach
their destination a little faster
in 2015.
And, for the first time, if a
boater along the Cal-Sag Chan-
nel or Fox River operates un-
der the influence, the boat can
be impounded.
Likewise, if underage kids
are caught drinking inside cars,
motor homes, campers and pri-
vate planes, their parents now
can be charged with a crime.
As Illinois residents begin
a new year, they face 220 new
laws that took effect Jan. 1, ap-
proved by lawmakers and Gov.
Pat Quinn. The highlights cov-
er various issues, from trans-
portation to wild animals.
TransportationAfter lawmakers raised the
speed limit to 70 mph on down-
state interstates in 2014, they
decided to do the same in 2015
for Chicago-area interstates
under the Illinois Tollway Au-
thority’s control.
However, it could be a
while before 70 mph speed lim-
it signs start popping up along
Interstates 88, 294 or 355. The
tollway authority still needs
to conduct traffic studies to
determine if a speed limit in-
crease is warranted. Then it
would require approval from
the tollway’s board of direc-
tors, the Illinois Departmentof Transportation and theJoint Commission on Admin-istrative Rules before takingeffect.
Another bill now prohibitspolice from taking a person’sdriver’s license as bond afterpulling them over for minor traf-fic violations such as speeding.
Illinois was one of six statesthat allowed police to confis-cate licenses for minor trafficviolations, according to Illi-nois Senate Republicans.
BoatingLegislation sponsored by
state Sen. Julie Morrison,D-Deerfield, requires boaterstowing a person to displayan orange flag. The bill wasinspired by Morrison’s neph-ew, Tony Borcia, a 10-year-oldfrom Libertyville who died af-ter a crash along the Chain O’Lakes in 2012.
Borcia fell off an inner tubebeing pulled by a boat on Pe-tite Lake and died after beingstruck by another boat. Theflag is meant to alert nearbyboaters that a person is beingtowed.
Another law sponsored byMorrison allows police to seizethe crafts of intoxicated boat-ers in certain cases.
Children and healthKids younger than 18 who
suffer from seizures now canqualify for the state’s medical
marijuana pilot program with
a parent’s consent.
Another law requires re-
tailers to sell e-cigarettes ei-
ther behind the counter, in an
age-restricted area or a sealed
display case.
Lawmakers also expanded
schools’ jurisdiction with cy-
berbullying in 2015. Schools
can discipline students who
bully others through personal
phones and computers, along
with school-owned devices.
Another measure allows
parents to be charged with a
crime if their child is caught
drinking alcohol inside cars,
private planes, motor homes,
campers and boats.
It expands an existing law
that made it illegal for parents
to allow underage drinking at
their home. The new law ex-
tends the prohibition to prop-
erty owned by parents outside
of their homes.
Animal protectionBlack bears, cougars and
gray wolves are now protected
species in Illinois.
Although still rare, the wild
animals in recent years have
been spotted around the state,
including a black bear seen
last summer in a field between
Marengo and Belvidere, near
Interstate 90.
The new designation allows
conservation officials to better
protect the animals, as they
make appearances in Illinois.

Another Strong Year for Freddie Mac Multifamily SecuritiesMCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Jan 6, 2015) - Freddie
Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) Multifamily further reduced
taxpayer risk in 2014 by selling the overwhelming ma-
jority of credit risk on the mortgages it purchased to
private capital investors through its Multifamily K-Deal
securitization program. There were 21 Multifamily
securities offerings in 2014 for a total transactions
volume of $22.4 billion which, in addition to K-Deals,
included a small volume of other securities, including
the company’s Q- and M-Deals.
2014 Highlights:
Continued to support affordable rental housing
through securitization. Approximately 90 percent of
the apartment units Freddie Mac finances are afford-
able to households earning up to the area median
income, and most of those loans are securitized.
Issued $21.3 billion in K-Deals in 2014 and securi-
tized almost $93 billion in multifamily loans since the
program started in 2009, backing approximately $79
billion in guaranteed certificates and $13.5 billion in
unguaranteed certificates.
Introduced and issued $189 million in Q Certificates
that are backed by $215 million in multifamily loans
not underwritten by Freddie Mac at the time of orig-
ination but that meet the company’s current under-
writing standards. Q Certificates were introduced this
fall.
Issued $683 million in M Certificates backed by
$747 million in multifamily loans. M Certificates are
fully guaranteed tax-exempt and taxable securities
supported by pools of unenhanced tax-exempt and
taxable multifamily housing collateral.
Grew the private investor base to more than 140
domestic and international investors. Typical investors
are life insurance companies, banks, pension funds,
money managers and hedge funds, some of whom
assume first loss positions, reducing taxpayer risk.
Inclusion of K-Deals in the Barclays U.S. Aggregate
and Global Aggregate bond indices in June.

Wheaton North, South grads play in FCS title gameSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
The Football Champion-ship Subdivision champion-ship game between IllinoisState and three-time defendingchamp North Dakota State onSaturday will have a local fla-vor to it.
The Redbirds’ roster in-cludes senior offensive line-man Rocco Ammons (Whea-ton Warrenvil le South) ,sophomore offensive linemanKyle Avaloy (Glenbard South)and freshman wide receiv-er Matt Biegalski (WheatonNorth).
Ammons has been a main-stay on the field throughout hiscollegiate career. He played inseven games as a freshman be-fore starting 13 and 11 games,respectively, during his nexttwo years. A mainstay againston the Redbirds’ offensiveline this season, Saturday willmark Ammons’ final collegegame.
Avaloy is the starting leftguard for the Redbirds thisseason after seeing action infour games in 2013.
The contest will be playedat 12:05 p.m. Saturday in Fris-co, Texas.
The Redbirds went 10-1during the regular season be-fore knocking off NorthernIowa, Eastern Washington andNew Hampshire in the play-offs.
Wisconsin-Whitewaterwins another national title
For the sixth time in thepast eight seasons, the Wiscon-sin-Whitewater football teamcaptured the Division III na-tional championship after de-feating Mount Union 43-34 onDec. 19, 2014, in the 2014 StaggBowl XLII.
Wheaton North gradu-ate Lake Bachar tied a StaggBowl record for field goals inone game with three, includ-ing two in the fourth quarterfrom 31 and 34 yards, respec-tively.
The sophomore also servedas the team’s punter through-out the season, averaging 38.4
yards on 54 kicks.Other local players on the
Wisconsin-Whitewater rosterinclude junior wide receiv-
er Coleton Hrgich (WheatonNorth), freshman runningback Dom Garza (WheatonNorth) and freshman line-

Hrgich caught two passeson the season, including one

Davis closed out his careerin stellar fashion, making his-
tory by becoming the first wide-out in the NCAA to ever scoreeight or more touchdowns infour separate seasons.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounderended this year by hauling insix catches for 139 yards andfour touchdowns in the Chip-pewas 49-48 loss to WesternKentucky in the BahamasBowl.
For the season, Davis had60 catches for 980 yards and 13scores in 10 games.

Santaromita: How do youthink the team played againstYork in the tournament finale?
Jordan: I think it was a goodteam win after coming backfrom DePaul Prep and St.Pat’s. We did good this tourna-ment playing team basketball.
Santaromita: Do you think itwas a good tournament for youguys overall?
Jordan: Yeah, it’s hardto lose a one-point game toDePaul Prep in overtime, butgoing 3-1 in this tough tourna-
ment is good for us. We werehoping to go as far as we can,but 3-1 in this type of tourna-ment is really good.
Santaromita: What’s it likeplaying four games in five days?
Jordan: It brings me back tomy middle schools days andAAU type stuff. It’s hard onthe body, but it’s fun to play alot of basketball and just playgames.
Santaromita: Does that bringanything out of the team, beingaround each other more often?
Jordan: Yeah, it definitelyhelps morale. We all have tostick together through all this.Four games, who knows whatcan happen.
Santaromita: Heading intothe new year, what are you guyshoping to do the rest of the way?
Jordan: We have the restof our conference [schedule]left. We’re hoping to keepgoing with that and just keepimproving as a team and keepplaying our basketball.

ELMHURST – If respond-ing to adversity is a test of agood team, Wheaton Northpassed.
The Falcons suffered a one-point overtime loss to DePaulCollege Prep on Dec. 27, 2014,in the second round of York’sJack Tosh Holiday Tourna-ment.
After a day off Dec. 28,North responded with two con-solation wins against teamswith winning records in St.Patrick and the host Dukes.
“ W e h a d s o r t o f agut-wrenching loss Saturdayand it was great to beat avery good St. Pat’s and a verygood York team and feel goodabout ourselves going into acouple days off,” coach DaveBrackmann said. “It wasgreat to see because that wascertainly a very tough loss[Dec. 27, 2014,] and we easilycould have felt sorry for our-selves and we didn’t, whichis good.”
After beating WaubonsieValley 41-24 in the tourna-ment’s first game, the Falconstook DePaul Prep down to thewire. Nick Traversa hit a 3in the final minute of regula-tion to tie the game. In over-time, Traversa had a potentialgame-winning shot at the buzz-er fall short in the 41-40 lossafter the opposition made twofree throws with 12.8 secondsleft.
The Falcons (8-3) then beatSt. Patrick 74-64 and York 65-46in consolation play.
“We certainly would haveloved to win on [Dec. 27, 2014]and get a chance to keep goingin that winners column, but allin all we took strides this weekand I think we can learn fromthat loss for sure,” Brackmannsaid. “We take a lot of positivesout of this week.”
Nick Jordan scored indouble figures in all fourtournament games, averag-ing 15.5 points per game, andwas selected to the all-tour-nament team. Traversa alsoaveraged double figures at 12per game. Five Falcons, Jor-dan, Traversa, Luke Antho-ny, Jake Heggeland and Row-an McGowen, had 11 or moreagainst York.
“We are a balanced team,”Brackmann said. “That’s agreat luxury to have, not re-lying on one or two guys. It’sdifficult for defenses to focuson just one or two. We got dif-ferent guys step up on differ-ent days. The last couple dayswe got everybody sort of click-ing.”
The Falcons next play Fri-day at St. Francis on and re-turn to DuPage Valley Confer-ence play a week later againstNaperville North.
