Sustainability Commitments

The Hilton Vancouver Washington is the host hotel of the WSRA 34th Annual Conference & Trade Show. The Hilton opened in 2005 and is the first hotel in the world to achieve both LEED and Green Seal Certification. Below are the Hilton Vancouver Washington’s Sustainability Commitments. Recycling, Composting & Waste Management• Bale all cardboard and recycle all cooking oil for the use of bio-diesel• Composting of all applicable waste• Recycling containers in all guest rooms• Recycling receptacles in “hear of the house” areas• Used amenity and bottles donated to local shelters• Copy machines defaulted to black and white, double-sides copies

Sustainable Meetings• Leftover food is composted or donated to local charities• Local and organic menus• Sustainability specialist on staff• Recycling containers throughout the convention center• Tools for meeting planners to view and create online, reducing paper

waste

Energy Efficiency• Complete Energy Management System Installed, CO2 sensors in meeting

rooms• CFC Reduction in HVAC&R equipment• Fluorescent lighting in all areas including guest rooms, occupancy

sensors to automatically turn off lights when meeting rooms are not occupied

• Elimination of HCFC’s & Halons, which are harmful to the Ozone

Waster Conservation• Stormwater Management, up to 25% decrease - using under building

drainage system not city drainage• Linen and towel reuse program• Landscape & Exterior Design to reduce heat islands - white roof for

reflection of heat• Landscaping utilizes plants and trees indigenous to the region requiring

less water, fertilizer and pest management• Low-flow showerheads and toilets; timers on irrigation system to

Just Eat It - Where is Your Food Going?

Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin, Peg Leg Films

Grant Baldwin and Jen Rustemeyer are the duo behind The Clean Bin Project, a multiple award-winning documentary film and blog about a year long competition to live zero waste. Grant is a film director, editor, composer, and photographer who started his career in audio engineering while Jen is a writer and film producer by night and an analyst for Light House (a green building non-profit) by day. Between them they have bicycled across the country, written songs for hit movies like Limitless, taught veggie education in schools, and made toothpaste from scratch. They are dedicated recyclers and zero wasters and recently spent 6 months living off discarded/rescued food as part of their forthcoming documentary on food waste called Just Eat It. Session moderated by Terra Heilman, Terra Linda Consulting.

Composting Infrastructure and MaterialsSpeakers: Patrick Belzberg, ABM; Keefe Harrison, Resource Recycling System; Mary Harrington, WA Dept. of Ecology; Moderator: Jeff West, New Day Recycling

From janitorial programs in support of zero waste programs to a review of materials collected and what it takes to collect and process them, we will review some of the opportunities and challenges faced in collecting and composting commercial food waste.

Strategies to Improve Recycling CollectionSpeakers: Abby Christensen, Republic Services; Gerty Coville, King County Solid Waste Division; Luis Carlos Hillon-Mendoza and Steve Hamai, Seattle Public Utilities; Moderator: David Stitzhal, Full Circle Environmental

Can recycling collection logistics efforts promote “more” and “better quality” recycling? Learn about: King County’s cart tagging project which increased recycling and reduced contamination in unincorporated areas. And, the City of Seattle’s “One Less Truck” pilot which resulted in mixed outcomes in different neighborhoods, and determined that city-wide implementation may result in inequitable impacts on some communities and residents.

Carpet Recycling: National Perspective, Local OpportunitiesSpeakers: Shirli Axelrod, Seattle Public Utilities; Eric Nelson, Interface Americas; Bob Peoples, Carpet American Recovery Effort; Ronald Greitzer, Los Angeles Fiber and Reliance Carpet Cushion; Moderator: Shirli Axelrod

This session will include information about the latest technologies and capacity for carpet recycling, both in WA and throughout North America; successes and challenges with products made with recycled content in carpet; and policy partnerships examples of both market development and product stewardship.
