WRVS tailors support to your individual requirements. We’ll visit you on the ward to discuss your needs and tell you how we can support your safe return home. Services we offer include:

•preparing your home for your return from hospital, for example putting the heating on and providing a welcome home pack

•welcoming you when you come home from a hospital stay

•assisting you with visits to outpatients’ appointments, shopping, collecting prescriptions and social activities

•helping to write and post letters or birthday cards

•telephone befriending service

We’ll even visit for just a cup of tea and a chat, if that’s all you’d like us to do!

WRVS volunteers cannot do any work that is done by any other organisations or services such as personal care or dealing with financial matters.

WRVS offers the kind of friendly, informal help which enables you to return home with confidence. Having someone to lend a hand with shopping, collect prescriptions or just be there when you begin to do things for yourself can help you regain your independence.

All our volunteers have been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau and they all carry identification so you can be sure that they’re genuine. If you’ve got any worries you can call us for a security check, either on the main WRVS number during office hours, Monday to Friday, or on the service number. Both numbers are listed on the back of this leaflet.

Getting help from WRVS is as easy as one, two, three!

One You will be referred to the scheme by Adult Health and Social Care. If you are over 50 you can call us direct and self refer.

Two A WRVS member of staff will visit you to discuss the type of support you need. Complete a registration form and pay an annual registration fee of £5.

Three You’ll be matched with a volunteer from your local area who will work with you to give you the support you need. We charge 45p per mile for any journey you make with one of our volunteers, for example to doctors or hospital appointments, shopping or social clubs.

WRVS can provide you with support for a period of four to six weeks. The number of visits you will receive during that time will be agreed with the Home from Hospital manager and your volunteer.

Returning home from a stay in hospital can be overwhelming, but knowing that there’s some extra support waiting for you at home can be just what you need, helping you to leave hospital sooner.

“Volunteering is flexible and fits easily around my other commitments. And it feels good to put something back.”
