could be important deductions for 2014. Since ourout-of-pocked medical costs keep rising (and ourincomes are less due to lower interest rates), youshould check your expenses, including:

• Medicare insurance and the drug premium• Insurance premiums - paid by you (after, not

pretax) or deducted from your pension andCobra costs

• Non reimbursed medical and especiallydental costs

• prescription drugs• hearing aids and batteries• medical mileage @ 23.5 cents/mile• long-term care insurance

While medical expenses are only deductible over7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income - now over10% if under age 65 - many taxpayers are itemizingthis year since their medical costs plus real estatetaxes, contributions and sales tax deduction add upto more than their standard deduction.STRAUSS TAX SERVICE can check yourmedical expenses. ADOLESCENT VS. ELDERLYDENTAL PROBLEMS

Q: Do dental issues get better or worse as youget older?A: Every stage of life has its challenges andopportunities. That applies to dental issues aswell. Dental health doesn’t necessarily get worseas you age, particularly if you have been attentiveto your teeth all your life. Adolescents, forinstance, have to deal with gingivitis, the guminflammation that some researchers think is aby-product of hormonal change at puberty orthe result of a typical teenage diet and poor oralhygiene. They may also deal with appliances theirparents opt for to straighten their teeth. The elderly, on the other hand, deal with changeslike receding gums, a condition that leaves thecementum that covers each tooth’s root exposed.Hence the saying, “long in the tooth” for aperson who is aging. The exposed part of thetooth is susceptible to decay and to abrasionfrom brushing. Older adults who have notconsistently practiced optimal oral hygiene couldalso be dealing with the problem of lost teeth. Inaddition, seniors are also prone to a potentiallyserious problem with wrinkling around themouth, a condition that stems from skin thatdoes not contain as much water and fat as ayounger person’s does.Every age presents its challenges when it comes tooral health. The best way to be prepared for thesechallenges is to visit your dentist regularly andpractice good oral hygiene all through your life.

Woodridge reports economic improvements in 2014By TRACY GRUEN

[email protected]

WOODRIDGE – 2014 saw new busi-nesses and fewer industrial and officevacancies in Woodridge, as staff con-tinued efforts to grow economic devel-opment in the village.

In 2014, Art Van Furniture, a68,000-square-foot store at BoughtonRoad and Woodward Avenue, openedits doors to the community, as did Hob-by Lobby at Centerpointe ShoppingCenter where Sports Authority usedto be.

“Woodridge is unique in that we’vebeen promoting that Woodridge is abusiness-friendly community,” Com-munity Development Director MichaelMays said.

Staff has been working on promot-ing outreach and economic develop-ment on the village’s website, saidMays, explaining it’s also important totalk with the businesses in town aboutwhat is working and what isn’t work-ing and make sure they know the vil-lage is a resource for them.

Woodridge had a 4.9-percent vacan-cy rate in industrial space toward theend of 2014, which is down from a 6-per-cent vacancy rate in 2013. The officevacancy rate also decreased from 19.8percent in 2013 to 13 percent in 2014.

However, the retail vacancy rategrew in 2014 to 10 percent from 6.2 per-cent in 2013.

Village Planner Jason Zawila saidthe 2014 rate would have been 5.47 per-cent if Dominick’s had not closed at theend of 2013.

In 2014, 31 businesses opened in Wo-odridge, but 35 also closed.

Zawila said the opening and closingof businesses is just one factor in eval-uating economic development.

“We’ve had some great vacancynumbers,” he said.

Seven of the 31 new businesses thatopened in 2014 are industrial, and therest are retail or service businesses.

On the indus t r i a l s i de , a353,278-square-foot building was builtfor Orbus Exhibit and Design Group, and phase 3 construction started on a256,000-square-foot building where theregional distribution center for Kel-logg’s will be located.

Art Van Furniture store managerBasel Hasan said Woodridge is a townthat is “steadily growing” in terms of

economic development, and being lo-cated in the villagemakes his store eas-ily accessible off of Interstate 355.

“The demographics of the commu-nity seem to fit our products,” Hasansaid.

In addition to new businessesopening, many restaurants, includingClara’s Restaurant, Woodridge Caffeand Wendy’s, also completed remodel-ing projects.

Since 2007, Woodridge saw a netgain of about 68,800 square feet of re-tail, showing significant improvementafter the recession.

Woodridge staff now is promotingthe vacant Dominick’s location to gro-cery users and general retail, accord-ing to a village report.

“Woodridge is working with severalother DuPage communities to promotethe vacant Dominick’s stores,” saidMays. The Woodridge Dominick’s siteis at 63rd Street and I-355.

Another project for 2015 is fillinga 9,000-square-foot retail site at thesouthwest corner of Boughton Roadand Woodward Avenue. A tanning sa-lon is one business planned for thatsite, Mays said.

The village continued its trend of agrowing number of new constructionfor single-family homes in 2014 with 30permits issued, compared to 27 permitsthe previous year. By 2019, the villagepredicts close to 300 additional familyhomes will be built.

“It’s been very encouraging interms of developer interest,” saidMays, referring to housing, industrialand retail opportunities for the village.

Council votes down electronic message board signsBy KELLI MURRAY

[email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – During itsmeeting Feb. 1, the village council opt-ed not to pass a motion to allow elec-tronic message board signs, endingCommunity High School District 99’spursuit of the signs at North and Southhigh schools.

The school district has beenworkingwith the village to begin the applicationprocess to rezone its two school proper-ties from residential to campus-scaleinstitutional and public, or INP-2, butalso sought a text amendment to thezoning ordinance to permit the signs.

The ordinance prohibits electronicmessage board signs in all zoning dis-tricts, including INP-2.

According to village documents, the INP-2 district was designed to ac-commodate development of propertieslarger than 4 acres for public, civic andinstitutional use. The only propertyzoned INP-2 in the village is the Advo-cate Good Samaritan Hospital campus.Village documents indicate other prop-erties that could be eligible for INP-2

zoning include: District 99 properties,Downers Grove Grade School District58 properties, the Midwestern Univer-sity campus and park district, forestpreserve and village properties.

The idea of electronic messageboard signs in the village was causefor concern among many members ofthe council.

“I am not comfortable to openingthis to residents,” said CommissionerGreg Hose, who expressed worry forcommunity members living in prox-imity to properties affected by the pro-posed amendment.

Commissioner Geoff Neustadt alsosaid he didn’t feel the signs were rightfor Downers Grove.

Residents who were unable to at-tend the meeting submitted remarksonline via the village website. Of the11 remarks submitted, the majoritysupported the district’s appeal for elec-tronic signage. Two members of thepublic spoke during the meeting, onein favor of the signs and one against.

“I have concerns about digital signsanywhere in the village, but I am notcompletely closed to this idea,” Com-missioner David Olsen said. “I am go-ing to be supporting this.”

Superintendent Mark McDonald ac-knowledged the school district’s desirefor electronic message board signs isseparate from its pursuit of INP-2 zon-ing, and said before the council’s Feb. 3

meeting, the district believed onlyGoodSamaritan and Midwestern Universi-ty, in addition to North and South highschools, were eligible for INP-2 zoning.

McDonald said the district acknowl-edges the text amendment question isdifferent if applied to each school andparkdistrict building inDownersGrove.

“I also want to note that at the Feb.3 meeting, District 99 showed examplesof digital signage at Naperville Centraland Hinsdale Central high schools,”McDonald said. “Those examples wereintended to be examples of comparablehigh schools, but in no way was our in-tent to offer council a specific sign forapproval, nor did we discuss specificdigital technology available, nor a spe-cific sign for review by the council.”

The intent was to proceed with atext amendment that would provideparameters, he said.

McDonald said while he was disap-pointed with the council’s vote, he re-spected its decision.

“We will continue to go forwardwith INP-2 zoning with the village,” hesaid.

The motion failed 4-3.

“I have concerns about digital signs anywhere in the village, but I am not completely closed to this idea.

I am going to be supporting this.”David OlsenCommissioner

Legislators respond to COD buyout of BreuderBy EVAN SHIELDS

[email protected]

Illinois Senate Democrats an-nounced the formation of a new sub-committee to investigate executivecompensation at publicinstitutions in a news re-lease Feb. 11.

The announcementcomes in the wake of thefallout following the ap-proval of a massive sev-erance package for Col-lege of DuPage PresidentRobert Breuder.

The subcommittee will be part ofthe Senate Higher Education Commit-tee and will steer reform efforts andensure tuition and tax dollars are usedresponsibly.

It will have threemembers: Bill Cun-ningham, D-Chicago; Dan Kotowski,D-Park Ridge; and a Republican whohas yet to be selected, according to JohnPatterson, director of communicationsfor the Illinois Senate Democrats.

“Taxpayers are demanding to knowhow we compensate administrators, why we are compensating them andwhat safeguards we can put in place toend the type of abuses we’ve recently

seen,” Cunningham, who will head thesubcommittee, said in the release.

The issue was thrust into the spot-light when the College of DuPageBoard of Trustees voted 6-1 to approvea $762,000 buyout for Breuder, who willretire March 31, 2016 – three years ear-lier than anticipated. The college willalso name its new Homeland SecurityEducation Center after him.

The vote drew outrage from thepublic, as 400 people attended a boardmeeting in January about the sever-ance package.

Board Chairwoman Erin Birt saidat the meeting the board quantified 1.5years of Breuder’s salary and benefitswhen coming to the agreement.

“This money could be better spent

on providing an affordable, world-class-college education for students. It couldbe used to offer much needed tuitionrelief for families,” said Kotowski inthe release. “Taxpayers cannot affordto pay for six-figure golden parachutes, shooting club memberships and otherlavish perks for public servants.”

Several local representatives arelooking at legislation regarding Breud-er’s buyout and others want to preventsimilar severance packages in the fu-ture.

Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, filedtwo resolutions related to the buyout. The first is a request for the IllinoisAuditor General to perform an auditof the college’s state funding from thepast three fiscal years. After Ives’ re-

quest, the college asked the auditorgeneral to move forward with the auditprior to receiving legislative approval.

Ives also is sponsoring a resolutionurging trustees to reconsider the buy-out and the building naming. At theJanuary meeting, several membersof the public expressed an interest innaming the building after Staff Sgt.Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton nativeawarded the Medal of Honor after dy-ing in combat in Afghanistan.

Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, an-nounced earlier this month he wouldintroduce legislation known as theBreuder Rule, which would ban exces-sive severance packages at public in-stitutions.

At a House Republicans news con-ference after the buyout was approved,Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, announced he would pursue legisla-tion banning the use of state money insuch severance packages.

At the news conference, legislatorsalso announced other possible laws in-cluding cuts in state funding for thecollege and reductions in the length ofboard trustees’ terms, which are cur-rently six years.

When reached for comment, collegespokesman Joe Moore declined.

“This money could be better spent on providing an affordable,world-class-college education for students. It could be used tooffer much needed tuition relief for families. Taxpayers cannotafford to pay for six-figure golden parachutes, shooting clubmemberships and other lavish perks for public servants.”

Sanguinetti, Cronin to lead consolidation task forceBy NATHAN LURZ

[email protected]

Government consolidation, Du-Page style, may be coming to countiesacross the state.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Execu-tive Order 15-15 to form the new LocalGovernment Consolidation and Un-funded Mandate Task Force headed byWheaton resident and Lt. Gov. EvelynSanguinetti during a press conferenceFriday at the DuPage Water Commis-sion in Elmhurst.

Rauner called it an “exciting steptowards turning our state around.”

“We need to encourage the stream-lining of local governments and ofschool districts to reduce costs and begood stewards of taxpayer dollars,” hesaid. “The [task force] will get the con-versation started on how to streamline[and] end duplicative services and im-prove efficiency.”

Rauner previously has praised con-solidation efforts in DuPage, most no-tably in his State of the State addressFeb. 4.

DuPage County Board ChairmanDan Cronin, who said he will play aleadership role in the task force, spoke

at the press conference, calling Du-Page a laboratory for consolidation. The county projects more than $100mil-lion in savings from its Accountability,Consolidation and Transparency Initia-tive, which Cronin started in 2010.

While Cronin said the county’s ap-proach to consolidation isn’t one-size-fits-all, he believes its principles couldbe transferred statewide.

“Imagine the savings if we couldrepeat that success story in 100 othercounties throughout Illinois,” Croninsaid.

Rauner said the government con-traction would have to come withoutcompromising the important serviceslocal districts provide.

The governor’s order comes justdays before he will present his bud-get proposal to the General Assem-bly in the face of massive debt and

revenue problems. He said cutting spending would

only play a part in his efforts to reformIllinois.

“As I’ve said, we need to grow ourway out of our problems,” he said. “Wecan’t just cut our way out of our prob-lems. Purely cutting alone withoutstructural, pro-growth reform won’tget us there.”

Sanguinetti said the governorwould appoint 15 representatives fromacross the state to the task force inthe next month. The group will lead astudy to determine which agencies andunfunded mandates to recommend thegovernor examine.

The task force wil be required tosubmit its findings to the governor andthe General Assembly by Dec. 31, atwhich time it will be dissolved, accord-ing to a news release from the gover-nor’s office.

Illinois averages nearly 54 units oflocal government per 100,000 residents,Sanguinetti said.

She said too many layers of lo-cal government aids corruption andheightens taxes.

Consolidation efforts will be a bigpart of the future of Illinois, accordingto Sanguinetti.

“Every dollar we save is a dollarthat goes back into the pocketbooks ofour taxpayers,” she said.

Board considersdissolvingDuPageFair & ExpositionAuthority

By NATHAN [email protected]

The latest DuPage County con-solidation effort may funnel somemuch-needed cash into the hands of theCounty Fairgrounds.

County Board Chairman Dan Cro-nin confirmed the county was lookingat dissolving the DuPage Fair and Ex-position Authority.

The organization is charged withreceiving and distributing annual pay-ments from the Illinois Department ofAgriculture to the DuPage Fair Asso-ciation to put on the five-day summercounty fair.

Cronin said the authority was anunnecessary layer of government.

“I always was prepared to dissolvethe authority, but we wanted to makesure there was a clearer picture aboutthe condition of the buildings and whatthe future of the fair might be,” he said.

The Fair Association’s lease for thegrounds is up in 2020, which has ledcounty officials to look into what theyshould do with the property and fair. The county recently received a reportdetailing suggestions for the future ofthe fairgrounds as well as more than300 building code violations on itsgrounds.

Many of the violations have alreadybeen addressed, DuPage County FairAssociation Treasurer Jim McGuiresaid in January, but work remained.

Should the authority be dissolved, the Fair Association would likely re-ceive the about $240,000 the authori-ty had in reserves as well as be the$204,000 the authority receives fromthe Department of Agriculture eachyear.

County Board member Jim Zay pub-licly brought up the idea during a Feb.10 County Board meeting after speak-ing to Cronin about it, Zay said.

“We’re the only county in the statethat has a fair authority and a fair as-sociation, every other county has a fairassociation,” he said. “So why do weneed that extra layer? We don’t.”

Mike Formento, chairman of theauthority, said he supported shuttingdown the body.

Originally, the authority was set upin the 1980s to be a watchdog of sortsover the money, eventually take overthe fair and also eventually accumu-late dollars for future real estate devel-opment.

Standardized testing is changing dramatically in Illinois.Out are the old, familiar tests; they are replaced with the newPARCC tests – which stands for Partnership for Assessment ofReadiness for College and Careers. PARCC will measure howwell students meet the state’s new, more demanding standardsknown as Common CoreState Standards.

By state and federalmandate, District 99 mustissue the test to students thisspring.

Not everyone is excitedabout the PARCC tests. Forexample, administering the test poses a variety of challeng-es. The assessments will be computer-based, which createssome logistical hurdles for us – and a departure from thepencil-and-paper tests that students are accustomed to taking. Also, assessments will be given over nine days, for two hourseach day. That’s a lot of time, and we’re adjusting schedules totry to minimize the disruption and stress to students.

Despite the obstacles, we believe that the PARCC tests bet-ter reflects our curriculum than previous tests ever could. Forexample, for English questions, students must read multiplepassages carefully, pull out key ideas and evidence and thenwrite persuasive arguments. For math problems, studentsmust show their work and write their reasoning. Studentsmust synthesize information, which is a more complex taskthan anything we’ve asked students to do before on a standard-ized test. But it’s what teachers ask them to do all the time inclass, and so we know there is value in it.

We anticipate the results of the PARCC tests will help ourteachers to make better informed decisions about their instruc-tion. By analyzing where our students succeed (and where theyfall short), we will be able to adapt lesson plans, increase stu-dent understanding and create new measures of accountabilityfor ourselves.

District 99 has been at the forefront of adapting our curricu-lum to align with the more rigorous standards, and we’ve seenthe positive impact on student learning. Raising our expecta-tions of what students are capable of achieving isn’t easy, butwe know that it is good for students.

Gina Ziccardi is the assistant superintendent for studentlearning at District 99, including North High and South HighSchools in Downers Grove.

Raising expectationswith PARCC tests isgood for students

Comcast complaintThis has to do with Downers Grove

Comcast. I pay over $80 a month forthe digital starter package and all theextra fees that they tag on with it. Andyet, there is no on-screen guide to theirprograms. Now, they used to have sucha guide on a certain channel where youcould see what’s on, but now they took itaway, and when you call them, they haveno explanation. This is ridiculous. Howare you supposed to know what’s on?Just one more bad thing about Comcast.

Accordingto the police department, he has this rightto do this because the dogs are on his prop-erty.My question is, where do his rights endandmine begin? This is a public sidewalk, and people need to feel safewhen they’rewalking past. The owner should bemade toput up a secure, 6-foot fence, so that youdon’t feel your life is in imminent danger. ... Iwould really like to see an ordinance by theDowners Grove Township to not allow thisto be going on, especially when the fence isright on top of a public sidewalk.

through once. I know peoplewho live on the south side oftown and whose streets werenot plowed for a couple of days.Don’t give Westmont that muchcredit unless you only drivethrough downtown Westmonton Cass Avenue.

Start COD building namepetition

I just read the article from theperson who suggested that theHomeland Security EducationCenter at [College of DuPage] benamed after Sgt. Robert Miller, who was a Medal of Honor recipi-ent, instead of the outgoing pres-ident. I wish that person wouldinitiate a petition and get publicityon that. He or she should call backin and tell people where to go tosign this petition. It’s a worthyreason to change the name.

Adults let down childrenof Jackie Robinson West

What happened to the childrenof Jackie Robinson West isshameful. Those children playedtheir best. They did everythingthey were supposed to do. Theadults let them down! I hopethose coaches are banned fromever coaching again. To them,it was more important to winthan show the boys that honestyand integrity are what counts.Imagine the hurt the coacheshave caused these boys. I justhope the boys can see this forwhat it is and not let it destroytheir hopes and dreams.

U.S. needs to take actionagainst terrorists groups

The murder of Americanhostages by Muslim extremistsis terrible. How does the U.S.A.stop this? First, imagine how aPresident Roosevelt, Eisenhoweror Reagan might have respond-ed to such murders. Immediatecarpet bombing of manufac-turing centers and terroristenclaves is a good guess. Withtoday’s technology, enhancedsecurity and pin-point retaliato-ry capability, a terrorist groupwould be certain of self-destruc-tion, ordered by presidents whocared more about the safety of

American citizens than politicalcorrectness.

Too much focus on pollsOur political campaigns have

become too expensive and muchtoo long. There is some valuefor the voter in the televiseddebates. At least we can learnwhat positions the candidateshave on certain issues. But theTV media does focus too muchon polls and pollsters. It canalways find a poll somewherethat will support its agenda, andthen it becomes the news. Iseveryone watching?

Where is thereligious tolerance?

Why do people feel compelledto denigrate other religionsand then wonder why there areconsequences to their actions?Freedom of speech meansyou “can,” but does it meanyou “should”? Where is thehumor in mocking any religion, whether it be through politicalcartoons comparing Moham-med to a dog, “Saturday NightLive”-type programs making funof Muslims and Christians, so-called “artistic” displays placingChrist immersed in urine, protesters making a mockeryof religious rites for fallenservicemen at cemeteries, etc.?Wouldn’t the world be a betterplace if all of us recognized howsacred each individual religionis to the followers of thatreligion?

Bag initiative not new ideaThis is not a new issue.

Developing countries, such asMongolia, have attached smallfees to plastic bag usage forquite a while. Very progressive.Of course, European nations haveencouraged reusable bag use fora long time. It has even inspired awhole new fashion in tote bags. Our village should find creativeways to discourage disposableplastic bag usage [and] find solu-tions to many other environmen-tal issues that can contribute toour community’s well-being.

Thank you to Glen EllynGood Samaritans

Many thanks to the familythat lives on Abbotsford Courtin Glen Ellyn. While walking the

dog, I slipped and fell on ice byMay and Grandview. The momand son stopped and offered todrive me home or for medicalhelp if needed. Later, the momcame back to see if I neededanything. Your kindness wastruly appreciated. Thank you.

Clarifying Glen Ellynofficial’s comments

In a previous Sound Offcolumn, board President GaryMayo was accused of “dispar-aging taxpayers” and of sayingthat the Glen Ellyn Park Districtshould “not lower taxes.”

Those statements are simplynot true. What he actually saidat the Dec. 16 board meetingis that the Park District should“reduce taxes when and if wecan,” and that the current taxlevy is already among the low-est of park districts in DuPageCounty (due to reductions inheadcount and expenses thathave already been made). Thefull text of his actual commentscan be found on the park dis-trict website. The current boardhas made fiscal responsibilitya cornerstone of its leadership, has balanced the operating bud-get and should be commendedfor its efforts.

Don’t support Rauner asElmhurst’s grand marshal

Oh, isn’t that wonderful.[Bruce] Rauner, who has beenin office a little more than amonth, is trying to bust theunions, and Elmhurst is proud tohave him as their grand marshalin their parade, and they areexpecting a big turnout. Please,if you work for a living, don’tgo. That would be the best wayto prove you are against thisunion-busting governor. Oh, andlet’s not let unions contributeto politicians. Let’s just let richbusiness owners contribute. This guy is a real joke.

Pick different parkingspot for snow in Elmhurst

This is the second winter in arow that when the lots betweenthe Walgreens on Palmer Driveand Chase Bank were plowed, they, in some infinite wisdom, decided that the one parkingspot that they would take outwith the extraneous snow – and

I do understand you have toput snow somewhere – is thehandicap spot between thosetwo businesses. I am thinkingnow, you’re putting people onsnow and ice, having to walk adistance with a handicap. I’veseen elderly people almost fall.Second winter in a row, there’sa million spots that they canuse to put the snow, but theypick the one handicap spot inthat whole area, and that’s justa grave concern to me.

Elmhurst parking tipDid you know that Elmhurst

has seven “municipal parkingholidays” that include NewYear’s Day, Memorial Day, July4, Labor Day, ThanksgivingDay, the day after Thanksgivingand Christmas? Martin LutherKing Jr. Day, which is a federalholiday, is not included in thislist. I found this out when Ireceived a parking ticket thatMonday. Thought I’d pass thisinformation on.

Resident-only parkingneeded in Lemont

I live on Singer Avenue inLemont. Could the village pleaseput up a sign on the corner ofSinger and Peiffer, the 900 blockof Singer, stating, “No overnightparking. Parking for residentsonly,” so that we the peoplewho live on Singer can park infront of our own houses? Whycan’t the people from the apart-ment house park on both sidesof Peiffer Street, and why don’tthey have village stickers?

Check speeders onFrontage Road in Lemont

This is a response to a Feb.6 Sound Off about “Don’t usechurch for speed trap.” I say goodfor Lemont police for possiblypreventing an accident. If that’swhere they have to sit and catchthe speeders, good for them, and if the person didn’t like it, it’sprobably because they’re speed-ing through there. I wish some-body would sit on the FrontageRoad. They use the Frontage Roadfrom Lemont Road to Woodwardas an alternate 355. They speedthrough here; they drop garbage.I’m paying taxes, but there’s noone ever sitting and checking thespeeders here.

Comments must be postmarkedby midnight March 20, 2015. If suicient interest is expressed in the permit, a hearing or otherinformational meeting may be held. Requests for information, comments and questions should bedirected to Brad Frost, Division of Air Pollution Control, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency,PO. A FESOP permit allows a source that is potentiallymajor to take operational limits in the permit so that it is a non-major source. he permit willcontain federally enforceable limitations that restrict the facility’s emissions to non-major levels.he permit will be enforceable by the USEPA, as well as the Illinois EPA.

developed, the association remains incontrol of the fair and Formento saidhe believed the association could serveas its own check and balance.

“We served our purpose,” he said.“We have very, very limited funds onhand which should be used now to as-sist inmakingwhatever improvementsneed to be done at the fairgroundsthemselves.”

The seven members of the fair au-thority are unpaid.

Cronin said the issue had been aconcern for years, and it was time for aserious look. He said he believed a 2013state law giving the board the ability toeliminate 13 local government entitiesextended to the authority. The countyhad previously dissolved a fire protec-

tion district in spring 2014.“We’ve been concerned about the

buildings and the economic viability ofthe fair as it currently exists for sometime now – it all seems to be comingtogether,” he said.

He believed the board could take ac-tion as soon as August after ensuringthe county or association could still re-ceive the state funds.

While he hoped the fair could con-tinue, Formento said he wasn’t sure ifthe Department of Agriculture wouldcontinue its funding due to the state’seconomic problems.

Should that dry up, the fact the as-sociation’s lease was up soon may notmatter as it would be hard to continuethe fair in its current form.

“It would be regrettable to see thefair go away, but like all things thatmay end up being the alternative thatmay be available,” he said.

Trojans trounce Plainfield Central in playoff openerBy ALEX SOULIER

[email protected]

BOLINGBROOK – DownersGrove North’s girls basketballteam notched a fourth-quartershutout during a dominantdefensive performance in theregional quarterfinals gameagainst Plainfield Central.

The Trojans held Plain-field Central to 11 points orless in every quarter, keepingthe opposing offense off thescoreboard for the final eightminutes of a 54-22 victory inthe first round of the Class 4Aplayoffs.

“We rely on our defense tomake other team’s uncomfort-able and set the tone for ouroffense,” said DGN guard Lau-ren Porcelli. “We got a couplestops early in the fourth quar-ter, and I think that gave us aboost on offense and helped usgo on a run.”

Ahead 34-22 going into thefinal frame, Trojans guardBrigid Miller nailed back-to-back 3-pointers from theright wing. On an ensuing of-fensive set, Porcelli then splitthe Plainfield Central defense, drawing a foul before sinkinga right-handed layup. She fin-ished off the three-point playand extended the lead to 43-22.

The Trojan’s fourth-quarterstarting lineup scored anothernine unanswered points be-fore head coach Stephan Boltunloaded the bench with aboutthree minutes left in the game.

“The Plainfield Centralzone defense was giving ussome trouble early, but wewere then able to work theball inside and kick it out tothe Millers, who hit some big3-pointers,” Bolt said.

Sophomore twins Brigidand Colleen Miller combinedfor five 3-pointers, while Pey-

ton Winters recorded her thirddouble-double in four gameswith 11 points, 11 reboundsand five blocks.

Although the Trojanswere again without leadingscorer Jaida Green, who willlikely miss the remainder ofthe season with a stress frac-ture in her left leg, DownersGrove North received con-tributions from up and downthe lineup Monday, enablingthe team to run away withthe victory.

“Anytime you are missing18 points per game from yourleading scorer, your offense isgoing to take a hit and it tookus a few games to adjust,” Boltsaid. “But it gives other kidsa chance to step up and makesome plays.

“We just have to share theball; our team mentality is tofind teammates shots. Makeit easy on the team and knowwhen to pass up OK shots forgreat shots. We need to takegreat shots every single timedown the floor.”

Porcelli led all scorers with15 points while Colleen Millerfinished with 12 points.

Downers Grove North ad-vanced to a regional semifinalmatchup against Bolingbrookon Tuesday. The winner willplay Oswego East or PlainfieldNorth on Thursday for the re-gional title.

S24 Kedrowski excels with newDownersGroveNorth team

By ALEX [email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – Jor-don Kedrowski has takenhis game to another level inhis only season on DownersGrove North boys basketballteam.

The senior, who trans-ferred from Neuqua Valley toDGN at the start of the schoolyear, quickly established him-self as the Trojans’ most con-sistent scorer, and through19 games he leads the teamin points per game (12.4) and3-pointers (109).

Additionally, the 6-foot-2guard is the team’s primaryball handler and has maturedinto an offensive catalyst, leading area teams with a 5.7assist-per-game average.

“The transition has gonepretty smooth, and it’s helpedthat the coaches implementeda new offense this season, sothe rest of the team was learn-ing a new system as well,”Kedrowski said. “We came inand had a lot great practicesto start the season. I credit myteammates for that, they werea huge help.”

Kedrowski also attributeshis success to the DownersGrove North coaching staff,

especially head coach JimThomas, whose tough loveapproach has helped him ma-ture as a player and a person.

“He’s hard on me, he getson me a lot in practice,”Kedrowski said. “But I thinkit’s because he sees poten-tial in me; he knows I wantto play at the next level andhe just wants me at my beston every single play. He’s afantastic coach, I’ve learnedso much from him that goesbeyond basketball.”

Thomas ’ t u t e l a g e o fKedrowski goes back fartherthan this basketball season. The coach first took Kedrows-ki under his wing when theguard joined his MercuryElite AAU team this pastspring.

“We had some really niceplayers on that team, andKedrowski was the pointguard that set up the offenseand distributed the basket-ball,” Thomas said. “So he’sreally taken on a new rolewith this team [DownersGrove North]. He’s still agreat passer, but he’s shownthat he’s an effective scorer, too.”

Like Thomas, who playedguard for Augustana College,Kedrowski hopes to contin-

ue his basketball career afterhigh school. He is currentlytalking to coaches at the Divi-sion-I, DII and DIII level, butwill not make a decision if andwhere he will play college bas-ketball until after the season.

“I don’t want to make itabout me, it’s about the teamat this point,” Kedrowski said.“We are focused on getting asfar as we can in the playoffsthis year, then after I will fig-ure it out.”

The Trojans could not beatYork for a second time thisseason, falling to the Dukes63-49 on Thursday. Kedrows-ki led the way with 15 pointswhile Colin Kramper chippedin 11.

DGN goes on the road toface Oak Park River Forest at7:30 p.m. Friday before squar-ing off against Nazareth Acad-emy at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Lisle girls basketball team’s season ends in regional semifinalsBy ALEX SOULIER

AURORA – The Lisle girlsbasketball season ended in theregional semifinals Thursdayagainst Westmont.

Facing their rival in Class2A Aurora regional semifinals, the Lions fought back from a23-18 halftime deficit to take athird quarter lead, but couldnot hang on in the waningmin-utes of the game, as Westmontprevailed 43-40.

In the first half, Westmontout-hustled Lisle, winningbattles for loose balls and re-bounds. But the second-seededLions began the second halfwith four-straight points onbaskets fromKate Twaddle andSarahMogensen.

WhenLisle took its first leadof the game on a four-point playby freshmanNatalieTakahashiwith less than three minutesto play in the third quarter, it

looked as if the girls might runaway with the victory.

But the Sentinels didn’t goaway, hitting timely three’sand chasing down secondchance opportunities.

“The two constants that

we’ve preached since day oneare defense and rebounding, and we didn’t do those twothings very well tonight,” Lislehead coach Nick Balaban said.“They took it tous on theboardstonight, and that was the dif-

ference. They were getting re-bounds off ofmissed free throwsand they were getting secondand third opportunities.”

Westmont’s Mara Caspersunk a three with 20 secondsleft in the game to give the un-derdogs a 43-40 lead. Lisle hadchances to tie on two ensuingpossessions, but could notmus-ter another comeback.

“We’ve got six seniors whoaren’t feeling good right nowand I told them I was proud ofthem and I loved them,” Lislehead coach Balaban said.

“We went through a lot thisyear to get to this point. I’msure we would have liked to ad-

vance and had an opportunityto play in the regional champi-onship, but tonight they werethe better team and they wonthe game.”

After an up-and-down startto the season, Lisle ended theyearwith a 19-10 overall record, going 10-1 in the InterstateEight and earning a share ofthe conference championship.

The team will say goodbyeto its six seniors, Sarah Mo-gensen, Monifah Davis, KateTwaddle, Kelsey Kretman,Leah Reeves and CourtneyO’Connell.

Freshman point guard Na-talie Takahashi had a breakoutseason for the Lions, averaging7.4 points per game and nearlythree rebounds per game, andwill return to the team nextseason. Sophomore TyAnnLeGrand-Melton (8.1 pointsper game) and juniors SammiMaas and Melissa Ericson arealso expected to be back.

DGNorth gymnasticsduo prepares for state run

By MATT LE [email protected]

HINSDALE – Downers GroveNorth gymnast Ellia Leger had towait a long time to perform her un-even bars routine Feb. 11 at the Hins-dale Central sectional.

But the patience paid off as Legerended an even longer wait – herschool’s 10-year drought betweenstate qualifiers.

The senior was the last competi-tor on bars and she rocked her set fora 9.35 score, good enough for fourthplace and an automatic berth at thestate meet at Palatine High School.

Leger’s bars routine completed hersectional meet and also allowed herto advance to state in the all-aroundcompetition. Her 36.775 was good forfifth place.

“I’m just really excited that all myhard work that I’ve [put] in the pastyear has paid off,” Leger said. “I wasactually really, really anxious beforeI was going [on bars] because I knewwhat I had to get and what I had todo. I just really wanted to go out thereand do the best routine that I could.”

Leger, who also qualified on bal-ance beam with a fourth-place scoreof 9.15, is the first Downers Northgymnast to qualify for state sinceKathy Zeles and Maggie Bronny wentin 2005. Leger is North’s first all-around qualifier since Krista Lewis

and Casey Panko in 2003.“I was hoping for bars and I wasn’t

really expecting tomake beamand all-around,” Leger said. “I just couldn’tbe more excited and happy.”

Downers Grove South sophomoreKayla Carlson was in a similar moodafter qualifying for the first time. Shestuck her Yurchenko vault for a ca-reer-high 9.45, good enough for fifthand the final automatic bid.

“I’m really excited to go and neverthought I’d be able to do it,” Carlsonsaid. “But I listened to my coaches. They’ve been telling me I could do itall year.”

Carlson achieved tremendousheight on the Yurchenko, the tough-est vault being done at the high schoollevel, and knew right away she wasgoing to stick it.

“I’ve seen videos [of it] and stillcan’t believe it,” said Carlson, whoearned an at-large state berth in theall-around, where she finished eighthwith 36.25, and beam. “I could feel itwhile I was doing it I knew it was agood one and I was just happy withthat.”

Downers Grove North, which wasmaking its first sectional appearancesince 2005, finished fifth in the teamstandings with 138.075 points, whileDowners Grove South brought up therear of the six-team field with 136.95.
