Last Month’s weekend Open House was very successful. We contacted local schools, papers and radio stations to advertise our annual event that allows families not able to get away during the week a chance to take a look at who we are and what we do. Family is important to the TCS culture and I am hesitant to take family time for school events, but there are times such as Homecoming, conferences and weekend Open Houses that cannot be avoided. It helps that we enjoy being together, as well. Thanks to all the teaching and counseling staff that attended and guided our guests. Special thanks to our ambassadors, one for Middle School and six for High School, who gave up their free time to represent the school. High school students, Marquis Victor, Emory Shulse, Rebecca Custer, Patrick Thompson, Jake Daunt and Chris Taura and Middle School student, Dillon Hall, are outstanding examples of the best of TCS. Chris did double duty by helping Dillon with Middle School families. Naturally, our visitors were impressed! This is the time of year when we are not only re-enrolling current students but actively interviewing for new students for 2014-15. I love it when an interviewing student sits up and takes notice as I begin to describe the simulated work format. I love the way the dads always respond to the aspects of our program that emphasizes accountability and self-reliance. Moms always respond to the encouragement and attention to a student’s strengths that our program offers. However, I was the one who sat up and took notice a few weeks ago when listening to the 60 Minutes broadcast focusing on the Year Up program for young adults in New York City. The topic was a corporate (Wall Street) sponsored program that selects young adults, usually from low income background, for an intensive program that emphasizes accountability, work based expectations, collaboration and job success. The goal is to give the participants an opportunity to achieve more than their previous environments have allowed. The program emphasizes the importance of appropriate work skills such as being on time, effective communication and organization. If a participant is late, his/her pay is docked. Once they reach seven infractions, they are dropped from the program. The participants practice conflict resolution. They learn time management skills. They practice setting goals and assessing their progress. They learn to accept constructive supervision and to provide professional feedback to their peers. Sound familiar? Upon graduation, each is assigned an internship in a local corporation in New York. One of the quotes I loved was that a company “hires for skills and fires for behavior.” How many times do we talk with our TCS students about that truth! I watched these young adults knowing that our students already have the skills that were being taught. Every TCS student may not be able to dismantle and reassemble a computer (one of the team tasks) but they certainly have practice working as a team. Our students learn to rely on their own ambition and strengths to tackle difficult assignments. They learn to determine which tasks they can easily handle and the tasks for which they may have to seek assistance. Right now I am trying to figure out how I can contact CBS or other media sites to focus on our innovative program and exceptional students. How cool would that be!

2014 AAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES @ TCS:

NEW DATES 2/15, 2/18, 2/20

Teams defeated on 2/15/14 are eliminated from Tournament. Teams defeated on 2/18/14 will

still play on 2/20/14 for the third place trophy.

On Saturday (2/15), #4 seed (AASD) girls will open tournament vs. #5 seed (MSA) at 1:00

P.M. The #4 (Howard) vs. #5 (MSA) seed boys will follow at 2:30. At 4:00 the #3 seed

(BHall) girls will play the #6 (TCS) seed capped off with the #3 (TCS) vs. #6 (AO) seed

boys game at 5:30 P.M.

On Tuesday (2/18), #1 seed (AO) girls will play winner of #4 vs. #5 seed at 3:00 P.M. #1

seed (BHall) boys will play winner of #4 vs. #5 seed at 4:30 P.M. #2 seed (Howard) girls

will play winner of #3 vs. #6 seed at 6:00 P.M. #2 seed (AASD) boys will play winner of #3

vs. #6 seed at 7:30 P.M.

On Thursday (2/20), the consolation games will begin at 3:00 P.M., starting with the girls;

boys will follow at 4:30 P.M. The championship games will begin with the girls at 6:00

P.M. and the boys will follow at 7:30 P.M.

All schools should arrive at The Cougar Center 30 minutes prior to their start time and all

games will start at the scheduled time unless a game runs longer than expected.

If a game runs late the 15 minute forfeit time will begin immediately following that game.

TCS will provide playoff labeled basketballs for warm up. Please place back on rack.

Parking is provided on the TCS campus in designated parking lots. Remind fans not to park

on driveway or lawn at gym entrance.

Buses need to be parked in the spots provided past the gym, on left alongside silver fence.

Admission is $3.00 for children and $5.00 for adults. Concessions will be available

throughout tournament. Hot dogs, popcorn, snacks, and drinks sold.

AAC 25th

Anniversary Playoff Mugs will be on sale for $10.00. Free refills on coffee and

Gatorade after first purchase.

There will be a designated hospitality room provided for all coaches and officials only.

There is no need for teams to bring water coolers. Each bench will be provided a water

cooler. Bottles are recommended.

Teams will have classroom space labeled. Top seed wears white. Coaches, please keep your

players supervised; wandering the campus is not an option. A Roswell police officer will be

on duty.

**TCS Deadline must be met if applying for accommodations

to receive extended time and testing over multiple days.

** The ACT is a college entrance achievement test accepted by

all 4-year colleges.

**All Juniors are strongly encouraged to take the ACT so that

there is adequate time to improve scores.

Roswell Woman’s Club

Scholarship 2014 Every year several of our students are awarded these scholarships

The purpose of the Roswell Woman’s Club Scholarship is to recognize and reward outstanding graduating seniors

and to assist them in pursuing their educational objectives.

The scholarship award amount varies depending on the proceeds of our fund raiser. In 2010 the Scholarship was

$1700, 2011 it was $1875, and in 2013 it was $1225.

Eligibility Criteria Applicant must:

• Either reside in, or go to school in, Fulton County north of the Chattahoochee River.

• Be a US citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident.

• Be a graduating senior in a public or private secondary school or a senior who is being home schooled.

• Be preparing to attend college, university, vocational, or technical school full time in the year of the

submitted application.

• Submit application and supporting documents by the publicized deadline.

• Not be a child or grandchild of a RWC member.

• Be chosen irrespective of sex, race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin. The scholarship is open to both

boys and girls.

• Not be a recipient of another scholarship offering full financial support, i.e.: an appointment to a Service

Academy/Presidential Scholar

• Participate as a volunteer in a RWC project. Applicants are asked to serve at least one shift at the Roswell

Woman’s Club Showcase Home Tour which will take place in late April. You may learn more about signing

up for this project at www.roswellwomansclub.org. You will be able to sign up for a shift beginning March

1. Click on the volunteer tab and follow the directions. If, for some reason, you are unable to cover the shift

you originally signed up for call the Staffing Coordinator to be assigned a new shift. Questions may be
