THE FACTS
In 2018 there were 33 deaths on the roads in Wiltshire
• 1 on the motorway
• 9 in Swindon
• 23 across the rest of the county
• 17 were vulnerable (pedestrians, motorcyclists, cyclists and children)
2019 stats until July are at 9 (confirmed)
Our goal
• DWFRS make up part of the Swindon and Wiltshire Road Safety Partnership – together we are committed to reducing RTCs
• Our 2018-22 Community Safety Plan targets us to reduce deaths and serious injuries in road traffic collisions by 40% by 2020
• UN SDG 3:
By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents
What we already do
• SDSA
• Offered to every school and college in Wilts free of charge
? young people (17-24 yrs) make up 7% of licence holders - represent over 20% of drivers killed or seriously injured (Brake)
• Survive the Drive
• Delivered to MoD
? vehicle-related collisions are the second largest cause of non-operational fatalities and injuries across the Ministry of Defence
• Biker Down
• 3 hour workshop
? Bikers make up 1% of total traffic & 18% of road deaths (RoSPA)
What else can we do
At least 1 in 3 road fatalities are work related
(Highways England)
Figures are expected to be higher - capturing this information is not mandatory
