Who Am I
1. I was born on 22nd November, 1914 in
Rangoon, Burma. My father was a Lieutenant Colonel, whose family originated in Devon, and the sons either went into the church or the armed forces. From 1928 to 1932, I was educated at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, and then at an all-boys independent school.
2. In 1933, I joined the RAF, and trained at RAF
Cranwell. I was commissioned as a pilot officer in July 1935, and joined No 1 Squadron RAF at RAF Tangmere. A year later, I was posted to No 36 Squadron RAF n Singapore. After promotion to Flying Officer in January 1937, I returned to Tangmere as a member of No 43 Squadron RAF, and was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in January 1939.
3. During the war, I was promoted to the
temporary rank of Wing Commander in December 1941, and 5 months later, became the commanding officer of RAF Drem in Scotland commanding No611 Squadron RAF (A Spitfire unit), During this time, I married my first wife – the marriage produced 2 sons and, and lasted until 1952 when we divorced. In January 1943, I became CO of RAF West Malling in Kent. During the war, my record was 9 aircraft claimed destroyed, 2 shared, 2 probable and 4 damaged. In 1944, I was appointed temporary equerry to King George VI, the appointment was made permanent later that year and I served until 1953 when I became Extra Equerry, an honorary office I held until my death. I retired from the RAF in 1956.
4. After my divorce, I formed a relationship with
the King’s youngest daughter, but when the news hit the press, I was posted as Air Attache to the British Embassy in Brussels. On October 31st 1955, Princess Margaret issued a statement ending our relationship. IN 1959, I married again, this marriage produced 1 daughter. I was one of several military advisors for the film “Battle of Britain” in 1969.
5. I wrote a number of non-fiction books, short
articles, and contributed to other books. I died on 19th June, 1995 in France as a result of Stomach Cancer at the age of 80. In 2002, a sculpture of me was erected in a new development built on the Old RAF West Malling Airfield.

This Month’s Joke
'Antiques Roadshow'
Paddy took 2 stuffed dogs to the 'Antiques Roadshow'. "Ooh!" said the presenter, "This is a very rare set, produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers taxidermists who operated in London at the turn of last century. Do you have any idea what they would fetch if they were in good condition?" "...Sticks?" Paddy replied.
Another Short Joke
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlour and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, 'Crushed nuts?' 'No,' he replied, 'Arthritis.'
