A Prayer Worth 100

Have you ever backed yourself into a corner?

Where there is no retreat possible?

There is not a means of negotiating.

The doors and windows are closed?

When you risk, when you step out in prayer with faith, it may feel like this but in reality

your corner has God in it. And that is the good news for today.

When I lost my job, I was in a corner, couldn’t figure out the next steps, trying to dance out to the left

and then the right, maybe duck some and “sting like a bumblebee” but still in the corner. But God was

there and I made it out.

When I graduated from college, I was in a corner. Job interviews, fear of the unknown, what to do and is

this the best option? In the corner, trying to dance out to the left and then to the right, maybe duck some

and “sting like a bumblebee” but still in the corner. But God was there and I made it out.

I could go on and on about times I felt in the corner and a decision that would change my life was there.

You as well? I’m sure. But as believers we know that God is there.

So I’m asking you to step into the corner with me for Westwood United Methodist Church. In the ring of

ministry, in the ring of spiritual warfare through prayer, in the day to day grind of obedience to the call

God has given us to be faithful and in love with Him and loving our neighbors. It is to pray boldly.

Pray about what?

Father, your call on Westwood is to be your hands and

feet, voice and heart for the people who seek you. Draw

100 into Westwood through our service in your name.

Amen.

To pray for your hands and feet, voice and heart to reach new people for Jesus.

To pray for the church of Westwood UMC together to be God’s hands and feet, voice and heart this year

as we live as missionaries.

To ask God for 100 people to start attending worship with us by the end of 2018.

This is our year! This is God’s year! This is a year of new beginnings in prayer and faith!

How’s that for a corner?

Can you believe with me?

Can you pray this and expect God to do it though you and me in 2018?

In 10 months?

Let’s welcome Chris McBride and his family

Chris was born and raised in Cincinnati. After graduating from Roger Bacon High School he joined the Marines, served four years, and was honorably discharged.

While serving in the Marines he accepted Christ into his heart and dedicated his life to Him. He and his wife Laurie, met at a church in Georgia where he was the worship minister. Together they have three great children: Rebeka (age 19), Elijah (age 17), and Ceana (age 5).

If you ask Chris what guiding scripture he tries to live by it would be Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Chris studied church music and voice at Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary now Cincinnati Christian University where he graduated in 2000 with a Bachelors of Music. In 2001,he was accepted as a graduate student in vocal performance at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 2001 where he graduated in 2003 with a masters of music. From there he accepted a position as Professor of Worship at Manhattan Christian College building a very successful worship program that still goes on today. While teaching, he enrolled at the University of Kansas part-time in the doctoral program later going to KU full time to finish his degree. Go Jayhawks!

Chris took the long way around to getting his doctorate by first taking a worship position at a church in Georgia, as mentioned before, where he met Laurie, and enrolled at the University of Georgia for a year in their doctoral program. Missing KU he returned and finished his doctorial program in 2010.

Returning to Cincinnati shortly after graduation in 2010 to take care of his elderly father, Chris worked for Spectrum as a cable technician and part-time as a worship minister in several churches around Cincinnati.

Chris has a background in performance having performed on a number of stages and in various genres. Singing in opera lead roles and chorus, oratorio, classical recitals, and concerts. He specializes in the Negro Spirituals and the gospel songs of Larnelle Harris who was the subject of his doctoral dissertation.

Chris says, “I often pray that the Lord helps me to keep my focus on Him (the Problem Solver) and to not give power to the problem. Each day this world’s need for Jesus becomes more apparent to me. The walls that Christ broke down through His once and for all time sacrifice, the enemy is incessantly trying to build back up. I believe in the work God is doing here at Westwood United Methodist Church and I am grateful that He has placed me here with you at this time to do His will.”

Chris McBride joins our staff and the Westwood family as the Worship and Technology Team Leader.

Be Prepared and Take Action

Severe weather in the United States causes numerous deaths and injuries and billions of dollars of damage. In a typical year, more than 1,200 tornadoes occur throughout the United States and nearly 12,000 reports of wind and hail are received from local law enforcement and the public. National Weather Service forecasters are the first line of defense in predicting severe weather. While the greatest number of tornadoes occurs in April, May, and June, tornadoes can occur at any time of the year, day or night. Fortunately everybody has the chance to survive a tornado. If you and your family are prepared ahead of time, you’ll be able to take the necessary action steps to survive a tornado and its aftermath. Here are some tips and resources to help prepare you and your family for a tornado and keep you all safe. While we rely heavily on technology and weather alerts today, there are some signs that Mother Nature provides before a tornado. They are: green sky/clouds, hail, flying debris, low-lying cloud with a rotation, stillness and quiet, the sound of a freight train coming toward your neighborhood.

Tornado safety tips before the storm 1. Be prepared – Tornadoes can strike at any time, 365 days a year, with or without warning. Make sure your family knows your plan of action if a tornado warning is issued for your community. Some things to consider include discussing the best place to take shelter in your home, the difference between watches and warnings, the county you reside in, steps you will take during and after the storm, and creating a safety kit. 2. Practice, practice, practice – Being prepared for a tornado is just the first step in keeping your family safe. If you don’t practice the steps you put in place, panic and injury could occur. Also, ask your family questions about your plan and different aspects of a tornado, such as the signs of severe weather and where to take shelter. 3. Protect important information – Consider storing important information in your safe, storm shelter, safety deposit box at your local bank, or electronically. Important information could include your insurance policy, loan/mortgage papers, medical information (i.e., allergies, regular medications, or a brief medical history), important telephone numbers, a personal home inventory, birth certificates, and social security cards.

Tornado safety tips during the storm

If your home has a basement, seek shelter there immediately. If there’s a sturdy object in your basement, like a workbench or pool table, crawl under it to protect yourself from falling objects. If your basement has windows, consider a place away from the windows.

If your home doesn’t have a basement, seek shelter immediately in an interior room like a closet or bathroom.

If you live in a mobile home or are camping in a camper, consider finding a designated safety shelter.

If you’re driving, seek shelter immediately or drive away from the tornado at a right 90-degree angle because tornadoes usually travel from west to east. Also, parking under an overpass will not protect you from a tornado. We’ve all seen pictures and TV footage where vehicles, including semi-trucks, are thrown around like toys. Find a ditch, culvert, or other low-lying area and cover your head. Be cautious of water flow if lying in a ditch or culvert.

If you’re watching your children performing at a concert in a school auditorium or watching them participate in their favorite sport in a school gym, be aware of your surroundings and identify a safe area where you could seek shelter. As we saw in the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, buildings with large roofs are dangerous and can be destroyed easily.

If you live in a dormitory or apartment building, find safety at the lowest place you have access and the most interior part of the building. Use stairwells to get there and, like fires, avoid using the elevator.

Tornado safety tips after the storm 1. If you’re away from your home at the time of the tornado, try to return safely. Listen to news reports to see if you can get up-to- date information about your neighborhood. Watch for fallen debris and power lines, and heed the advice of local authorities. 2. If your home has been damaged, consider turning off your main utilities, including your natural gas, electricity, and water main. If you smell natural gas, do not enter your home and call 911. 3. Only consume food or water that was not damaged by the storm. 4. If your home has minimal water damage, consider cleaning the area with bleach. Make sure you wear rubber boats, gloves, and eye protection. The area should be properly ventilated so open windows and use fans. 5. If you lost power, protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning by using generators, grills, and other fuel-burning devices in a well-ventilated area. 6. If your home was not damaged, contact your friends, family, and neighbors to make sure they’re safe. Ask them if they need a safe place to stay. 7. If possible, review your insurance policy and follow the necessary steps to contact them and file a claim.

The keys to survival are preparedness and action !

My Neighbor’s Place Prayer

Our My Neighbor’s Place Breakthrough Prayer representatives agreed to faithfully prayer for My Neighbor’s Place for 30 days, asking for God to guide us in the areas to grow at MNP. Then we gathered together to share what ideas and visions were laid on our hearts as we were praying specifically for My Neighbor’s Place. We discussed how to provide more small steps to welcome folks in, to be intentional about praying for neighbor’s without a church home would get connected to a worshipping community, we celebrated how the Holy Spirit was working through the Thursday morning prayer walking and prayer driving ministry, we want to provide more opportunities for neighbors to share their testimonies, we are praying for Jesus to continue to transformed lives as we grow together, and continue to pray for safety as well as healing (both physical and spiritual). One area we pondered was how to expand the ministries by partnering with other groups. Almost immediately after this discussion, five separate potential partnerships emerged which feels like God is opening new and unexpected doors. We want to invite our neighbors to join us in prayer for My Neighbor’s Place each day, by handing out prayer card reminders to each person. If you feel so led, would you be willing add My Neighbor’s Place to your daily prayer list? Can you circle our neighbors in prayer? If so, please email [email protected], that way we keep you updated if there are specific prayer concerns. Who knows what doors will be opened and how lives will continue be transformed as we continue on this prayer adventure.

ECKEL HALL PRAYER WALL Welcome to the WUMC prayer corner of Eckel Hall. Come, sit a moment and commune with God. Write your thoughts in prayer on the BROWN tags. When you receive an answer to your prayer, please return to the Prayer Wall and share your answer on a WHITE tag. The Prayer Administration Team monitors this wall. Each Wednesday afternoon at 2pm, the prayers are recorded

and prayed over by the Prayer Administration Team. Prayers remain on the wall until the following Wednesday

when they are removed, prayed over weekly, monthly, and saved for one year, to be prayed over once more.

We welcome prayers until they are answered, then please, record answers to your prayers on the white tags. Answered prayers will be praised each week and processed in the same manner, also being kept for one year. We ask all who pass by the wall, to ponder and pray for all visible prayers and answers. May they be an encouragement for others to share their God thoughts.

During the Breakthrough Prayer retreat that was held last month, one of the

suggestions/examples that Sue Nilson Kibbey shared from other churches

was neighborhood prayer walks. Those of us attending were excited to be

able to say “we’re already doing that!” This month, I’d like to focus on the

Neighborhood Prayer Walk/Drive that several people in our church have

been a part of and some “new things” that we’ve been doing.

The Prayer Administrative team launched a “Neighborhood Prayer Walk”

during I Love Westwood in October 2016 that has been going strong ever

since—groups of us walking or driving around Westwood, Cheviot and

recently expanding into Price Hill. In addition to praying, last May, we began

blessing 3-4 businesses, schools, churches, police/fire stations with desserts

and a prayer card. This has been a true “blessing” for the recipients as well as

us who are giving the treats! Here are those places we have been so far:

Businesses: Honda Motorcycles-Western Hills, Tom Bonhaus Auto, US Bank, Walgreen’s, Family Dollar, White Castle,

Subway, Muse Café, Westside Brewery, BP gas station, Tiny Tots Kiddie Care, Regina Bakery, Lenny’s, Bolton &

Lunsford funeral home, Neidhard Minges funeral home, Inner Blessings, Magic Mirror Salon, McDonald’s and Frisch’s

(both in Price Hill)

Schools: Westwood Elementary, Gamble Montessor i, Dater Montessor i HS, Western Hills HS, Covedale School,

Carson School

Churches: Westwood First Presbyter ian, Grace Luther an, St. James Episcopal, St. Cather ine’s Catholic, St. Peter

and Paul UCC, St. Martin’s Catholic, Cheviot UMC

Other: Westwood Fire Station, Westwood Police Station, Westwood Library, Westwood Town Hall, and Cheviot

Fire Station.

We meet at My Neighbor’s Place every 2nd Thursday at 10:00 am. and begin with a theme Scripture and a group prayer (for

God to lead us) before sending groups out to either walk, drive or both. We have had wonderful experiences as we have entered

each one of these locations with sweet treats (the funniest was going into Regina Bakery!), a prayer card and a question—“How

can we be praying for you?” We have seen God work in amazing ways in these various places. We either take their requests

and pray for them once we leave or prayed with them before leaving if have expressed that desire. One time, we were alone

with a salesclerk of a business and she asked if we would pray for them to have more business. After we finished praying with

her on the spot, a customer walked in, followed by another! At one school we went to, when we asked for prayer requests, one

of the secretaries asked us to pray for a family of 3 boys who had just become homeless. We were also able to bless them with

basketballs for Christmas which were extras donated to My Neighbor’s Place.

Pam Chaney, one of our regular prayer walkers/riders has been particularly impressed with how we are received:

“It is sometimes funny when we walk into a business or other places. The people look at us, probably thinking “What

do they want”?! It is so nice to see their reaction when we just say we're there with a love gift, blessing, and prayer.”

She also appreciates this: “At most of the places we visit, the common prayer request is for children. They ask that we

pray for their safety and well being.”

In between our stops we pray for those businesses or residential areas we are passing. Carol Colwell, another one of our

regulars, had this answer to prayer to share: “We prayed for my apartment building about 5 months ago—there was a lot of

drug trade going on behind the building. Ever since then, there has been no more drug trading! God really answered our

prayer.”

God’s awesome power is continuing to breakthrough in our immediate neighborhood. We have also been in prayer partnership

with Thomas Hargis, UM pastor who owns Jubilee Market (Harrison & McHenry corner) who attended a press conference last

June during which it was announced there to be a significant drop in criminal activity-- 83% drop in East Westwood and 49%

drop in Westwood. It’s been exciting to see God work in amazing ways during and after our prayer walks. We’d love to have

even more of you join us! Feel free to contact me for more information ([email protected]).

Ephesians 3:20-21 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all we ask

or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ

Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

IT’S J.A.M. TIME AGAIN

During the month of March we will be collecting packets of vegetable seeds for the Jackson Area Ministries Garden Project. Place your seed packets in containers marked JAM SEEDS located in various spots around the church. Jackson Area Ministries (JAM), Jackson Ohio, located in the southeast corner of the state, helps the needy in the area and several other nearby counties. Last year the ministry distributed seed potatoes to farms and in October these were returned as cooking potatoes, actually 12,000 pounds of these, to 6 area food pantries.
