  • Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses…. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” It sounds simple, and easier said than done. It is so, because we are not used to doing it. However, this is the model of correcting one another that Jesus has bequeathed to us. To make it work with greater value is to do it with love. It is love that will provide us the gentle approach in doing our painful but graceful obligation to correct a brother, a sister, or even a friend. When we go and tell our brother/sister their faults, we don’t go as an enemy but rather: ~we go with RESPECT and HUMILITY which make them believe in our good intentions; ~we go with GENTLENESS and PATIENCE to help us reach out to their hearts; ~ and we go with COMPASSION and LOVE to preserve the others’ good name, and let them know that our primary goal is reconciliation. To correct each other we need DIALOGUE and PRAYER; and these are not easy tasks. But they are necessary in bridging our hearts to God, to our families, to our friends and to our neighbors. Prayer softens and attracts God’s attention. Dialogue holds the pains of others through understanding and compassion. Dialogue and prayer are arts of peace-making, of creating unity, of building one body, and of healing a broken body of humanity. Today, be at home with the loving God by making prayer our key to enter God’s heart. And be at home with our brothers and sisters, our parents and friends, and our neighbors by making dialogue our key to enter their hearts.

    An Invitation to Journey

    The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which people become members of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is concerned with the total formation of the person into:

    • Believing with the Church community (doctrinal formation)

    • Living with the Church community (practical formation)

    • Praying with the Church community (liturgical formation)

    • Serving with the Church community (apostolic formation)

    The RCIA is intended to serve:

    • The unbaptized who would like to learn more about the Catholic religion

    • Those baptized in another religion who think they might like to become Catholic

    • Those baptized Catholic who have not completed the Initiation Sacraments or

    who have not been raised in the Faith.

    The process will begin on Tuesday, October 6th at 7 p.m. in the Garden Room of the Church. The registration form can be found on the parish website.     Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20

    On the Way to Mass: Is there a misunderstanding or argument with someone that is weighing heavily on your heart? On the Way Home From Mass: How can you listen to someone even if that person wronged you? Living the Word: With your children, compile a list of qualities that are needed to listen to someone (for example, patience, empathy, eye contact, focus, and so on). Practice listening to one another through the week. Each night, recall and identify which qualities were used to listen well. Discuss whether it is easier to listen when you are friendly or angry. Model arguments in which each child can practice being the wronged party by confronting the one who has hurt them. Talk about how they can use this to initiate moments of reconciliation.

    Make family time a priority Quarantine, lock-down, working from home, our local pandemic response may force us into being at home with our families for longer periods of time. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we are actually spending time together. Experts agree, however, that children’s comfort and security come from loving parents who spend time with them. The best way to make family time a priority is to be deliberate about it. Once a week: Dedicate one night each week to your family. Do something fun like playing board games, running races outside, making popcorn and watching a movie from the library. Protect it on the calendar and let nothing interfere. Several times a week: Come together at mealtimes whether for microwaved or home-cooked dinners. Sharing meals helps families to bond over everyday activities. Once a month: At the beginning of each month, gather to check in and discuss concerns. Children absorb adults’ stress and tensions. A regular check-in of their states of mind enables parents to respond to concerns. Let each person have a chance to bring up topics or suggest solutions. Once in a while: Introduce a learning opportunity. Discover a new saint, share a devotion, or introduce a life skill you want your children to learn. Mastering a new experience can help us forget our troubles and adopt a new perspective.

    Stewardship Opportunity Over 150 children and young people, k-12 grades will sign up this fall to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist. We are currently looking for grade school catechists on Sunday mornings, and middle school catechists on Wednesday evening.     Fostering Leaders St. Agnes students will be working on their leadership skills as we continue our work with the program The Leader in Me. Each month one of the 7 habits will be worked on encouraging students to first learn self-

    management skills and then move to becoming leaders of others. To foster leadership, various grades have been assigned important responsibilities within the

    school. 4th grade students raise the flag each morning while 5th grade students lead the pledge each day. 5th

    grade also provides assistance with clean up in the cafeteria daily. Younger students will have the

    opportunity for fostering leadership through classroom jobs and being part of the school trash team, which

    cleans up our grounds. We are very proud of our budding young leaders.

    Spirit Rally Excitement and energy filled the air as St. Agnes

    students gathered on the playground for a spirit rally held on Friday, August 28th. Donning their St. Agnes spirit-ware or the school colors, students and staff cheered, danced and shared their school spirit as a

    reminder that we are all in this together. We will not let the pandemic break our spirit or our bond. While cohorting is keeping us apart, we are bonded by our love for our amazing school community and nothing can break that. St. Agnes spirit is ALIVE and WELL!!

    MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) is a computer-adaptive skills assessment that provides parents and

    teachers with metrics to measure a student’s growth and progress. The MAP test is adaptive meaning that the

    computer allows for test questions to adapt to an individual’s skill level. The test covers reading, language

    and mathematics and helps teachers determine what skills need to be taught and how to best group children in the

    classroom. It also helps students set goals for improvement.

    St. Agnes 1st -5th grade students will be taking MAP tests beginning September 14th – September 22. We ask that you

    not schedule appointments during your child’s scheduled testing time. If you have a need for your child to be gone,

    please contact the classroom teacher to attain their individual test schedule and work to avoid these times.

  • Classroom News………... Kindergarten Class By Teri Ramirez

    Our first couple of weeks in kindergarten were a success! The boys and girls have done a great job at adjusting to our daily routine and to all the new rules. We have been working on getting to know the rules, learning about our new friends, and all the people who work in the building. In the coming weeks, we will be working on learning sight words, learning to write our names correctly and learning about different manipulatives in math. In religion, we are learning how to make the sign of the cross, and about all the wonderful gifts that God has given us. In science, we will be learning about our fives senses and push and pull. Teaching kindergarten is very rewarding for me, and I love every minute of it! The students make me smile, and every day brings something new and exciting. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to teach here at St. Agnes, and I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!

    Welcome to Third Grade!

    The past month has been fun-filled, but busy! We have been actively getting to know the routines and procedures of being upstairs with the big kids here at St. Agnes! We had so much fun on our first day of school. It can be scary heading upstairs, but we are doing just fine now!

    Academically we are learning about communities in social studies, and how we can contribute back to the community we live in. In math, we are reviewing how to read charts, calendars, and how we solve problems using lists, and logic. We are getting started with learning the much-loved cursive handwriting. The kids are excited to really take off and learn

    how to fully read and write in cursive this year!

    We are just about fully adapted to the big changes this school year has brought on. We have come to realize that wearing masks really is not all that bad, but we do love our mask breaks at recess and lunch! It never ceases to amaze me how resilient children are! I am so excited for this school year. This is a great group of kids, and I can’t wait to see them change and mature as third graders!
