A teenage girl had just been given family car driving privileges. It was Friday night. She wanted to go out with her friends. Her father gave her permission to use the family car, providing she be back home before eleven o’clock. Well, she returned home late, real late. She missed the deadline. The next morning her father went out to the driveway to get the newspaper. He came back a bit disturbed. No newspaper! At 10:30 in the morning the girl sleepily walked into the kitchen. Her father immediately asked her, “What time did you get in last night?” “Oh, it wasn’t too late, dad!” With a stern look into the eyes of his daughter, he said, “Then I’II have to ask the paperboy why he put the newspaper under the front tire of my car!” Sometimes the hard lessons we have to learn in life come with a steep learning curve. Today’s Responsorial Psalm reminds us that we need to learn the ways of God. When you pray these words, think about what you want the Lord to teach you. What is it that God is trying to teach me in the year of 2018? It is a new beginning…live for today alone…tomorrow’s problems are its own.

This Week’s Schedule

THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. In the scriptures today we hear of Jonah and the first disciples responding to the call of the Lord. Each, to accept his commission to follow the Lord, needed to turn away from worldly desires and act as the Lord directed. Jonah, as we know, was resistant to God’s instructions to announce the imminent destruction of the city of Nineveh and tried to run away from God. Through the mis-fortune of a terrible storm at sea Jonah ended up in the belly of a whale for three days. Jonah asks for God’s deliverance from his

predicament vowing to do whatever God asks. When he comes forth from the whale, Jo-nah meets his obligation to God and goes to Nineveh. He forecasts the future of Nineveh unless they atone for their wickedness. Jonah’s admonition has such an impact on the city that the king and its citizens are repentant and God saves them from destruction. Even after being rescued from drowning, surviving being in a whale for three days, and observ-ing the conversion of Nineveh, Jonah, instead of recognizing the glory of God, continues to be resistant to God’s plan.

In the Gospel today, Andrew and Simon-Peter walk away from their fishing boat and James and John, who leave their father without looking back, also follow Jesus. It is the words and presence of Jesus that caused the disciples to give up their possessions and family. They didn’t ask for time to beach their boats or wash and hang their nets. Jesus called, and they responded to become different fishers; evangelizers to announce a new relationship with God, as God fulfills His promise of salvation. Without these men, the message that Jesus brought to the world would have never spread to all the distant lands of the earth. The decision to step forward changed them forever, for the disciples of Jesus would soon be persecuted, and some die a martyr’s death. However, through their self-sacrifice, the knowledge of salvation from our sins became possible.

Jonah stubbornly believes that his priorities are more important than God. We can be like Jonah, not accepting that God has a plan for each of us to intervene with those who have lost their faith and become the agents of change enabling their conversion. In what ways do we resist the plans of God? Are there particular persons or groups of people we wish God would just destroy rather than ask us to go to them as messengers of his mercy? Do we ever hesitate to share Christ with people that are very different from us or whom we perceive to be our enemies? Do we automatically assume people will reject our offer, so we never bother to share the Good News?

Or we can liken ourselves to those disciples who step forward at the beckoning of Jesus, inspired to do great things for the Lord even though they did not know what their future would hold. We need to give up the notion that the internal satisfaction we seek to complete our lives is not found in the expectations of this world. The closest that we will ever achieve to understanding God’s plan is when we express charity to one anoth-er, give the virtue of hope to those who are in despair and share our faith with those who need the find salvation of Jesus. As the Body of Christ, we are called to resist the attitude of Jonah, and instead turn our attention to the Ninevites of our world. May we do that with great passion and compassion so that one day the Lord can say to us “Well done good and faithful servant. Come, enter the Kingdom and be with Me forever.”

Treasures from our Tradition

One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, “Ons Lieve Heer op Solder.” What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and “de-Catholicized” them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed “Old Church” by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work “hiding” St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It’s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there’s no need for any of them to hide in the attic. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Gospel: Mark 1:14-20

On the Way to Mass: What do you need to be able to catch fish? the Way Home From Mass: How has God called you to be a fisher of people? What equipment do you still need? Living the Word: Jesus had so many tools for attracting followers that everywhere he went people listened and left behind all that they knew and loved to follow him. With yarn or strings, the family can create a net of care to attract “fish.” Each strand can represent something that would attract people to God. Ask the family members to think of reasons that they practice their faith. Encourage them to discuss what people found and still find attractive about Jesus. As you build your net, feel free to add on to it. Hang it by the door or the ceiling of the entryway to remind you to always be ”fishing.”

Coming to St. Agnes in June 2018

Junior/High School-(Grades 7-12)

June 10th- 14th- 7-9 p.m.

Grade School - (Grades 1-6) June 11th - 15th - 9 am -2:30 pm The Totus Tuus Curriculum The Sacred Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church provide the foundation of the catechetical instruction of the Totus Tuus summer catechetical program. One of the unique features of Totus Tuus is the two independent cycles of catechetical materials. The six core topics of catechesis (which come by dividing the four pillars of the Catechism into six major elements) and the four mysteries of the Rosary make certain that every summer has an original presentation of material for the students. Because the two cycles have two different combinations, this enables diversity to the topics but unity in theme. This ensures a fresh but consistent Catholic summer program. Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to vocations in the young people we serve as well as among the teachers. This is accomplished by placing special emphasis on the importance and necessity of prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and Marian devotion in addition to catechetical instruction and formation in the Catholic faith. If your are interested in hosting the female or the male team of leaders please contact Terri in the RE Office for more information.

Hot Lunch Menu for January 21st-26th

110 Pre-K-5th grade students enjoyed a day of adventure on January 12th as they celebrated reaching their 1st semester reading incentive goal. Amandi Filipi from the Wildcat Hills Nature Center did a 30 minute presentation for each class in the morning teaching them about animal habitats. Students enjoyed drawing and look-ing for signs of animals in the winter. In the afternoon, students enjoyed fun day-camp activities including: a craft, making s’mores on a stick, playing camp bingo and a marshmallow toss. A great time was had by all. Congrats to those students who met their reading goals!!

The annual Penny Carnival is fast approaching and preparations are underway. The event will be held on Sunday, March 4 from 11:30-3:30. Parents should have received a sign-up sheet for working a shift. As per your tuition contract, all families are ex-pected to help with the carnival by working a 2 hour shift and providing 2 cakes. Please return your work preference ASAP. The bingo committee is looking for prizes. A box will be located near the front door for collection. The kitchen committee is also seeking donations of enchi-ladas, brownies or financial donations. Students will receive their raffle ticket envelopes on Friday, Jan 26th. This is a great way for the children to work for a cause they love and believe in. This event has been a part of St. Agnes School since its inception and is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our wonderful school. Please mark your calendar now and plan to help in making this event a huge success.

School News...

St. Agnes welcomes a new face to our building beginning the 2nd semester. Gabby Aguilar will be assisting in After 3.

What's happening in music you ask? Many things! Now that all the holidays are done, we are back to our music curriculum! In pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, we are exploring opposites in music. We have learned about soft and loud music, high and low pitch, and fast and slow tempos! The little ones are al-ways so eager to learn new things. Ask your child about fairies and giants. It's a huge hit in music! For 1st and 2nd graders, we are learning about musical symbols and what they represent. So far, we have learned (and reviewed) about dynamics, tempo, and pitch. These students are now learning the ba-sics of reading music! They have started learning about music notes and how many beats they repre-sent, quarter and half notes in particular! They have so much fun with these new subjects! In grades 3-5, these students are truly learning how to be young musicians! They are learning a new language; the language of music! They have learned about quarter, half, dotted half, whole, and even eighth notes. They also know about quarter, half, and whole rests! We are beginning to place these on the grand staff, along with note names and time signatures! (Which is NOT easy!) They have been working very hard these past couple weeks getting back into the gear of school! It's been a great kick off to 2018 in music!

My name is Gabriela Aguilar. I was born here in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. I’m 16 years old and i’m a sophomore at Scottsbluff High School. I’m Secretary of Educa-tors Rising at Scottsbluff High School. Some of my hobbies are shopping, traveling, and cooking.

Mrs. Lori Svitak--2nd Grade The second grade class has had another busy month. I am happy to say the children came back from vacation ready and eager to learn. In Social Studies, we are exploring the continent of Antarctica. We will learn about the weather, po-lar animals, life in that region, and landforms found there. One animal in particular we will focus on is the penguin. Story writing and art projects abound with this subject. We will be reading about the polar regions with our 4th grade book buddies. In Math, we have dived into trading in addition. We started this lesson trading pennies (ones) for dimes (tens). This makes a great way to learn this concept. In Phonics, our focus has been on blends and digraphs. We will continue to make words using these letter combinations. In Science, we are talking about plant and animal environment and their dependence on each other to live and continue the life cycle. Our class is getting ready for our 2nd Sacrament : Reconciliation. This will happen on Saturday, Janu-ary 20th. Please keep the students in your prayers. Happy January Birthday goes to Cami Linz, Quentin Gould, Cooper Dudden, Elena Blanco, Isaac Blanco, and Henry Blanco.
