Indiana. Their oldest eon, James Woody, was born about 1803. He and his first wife, Rebecca Cole, were the parents of nine children: Sarah {Woody) Pender, Ezra, John, Franklin, Jere· miah, Joseph Henry, James, Nancy {Woody) Kindred, and Samuel. Following the death of Rebecca, James was married to Asenith McGlemery on December 17, 1840 in Lawrence County, lndian.a. She was born in 1819. Their children were: Robert, William Hayden, Thom· as, Lucinda fY{oody) Cox, Ruth fY{oody) Jen· kina, Elizabeth fY{oody) McBride, Felicia A. (Woody) Foglesong, Eli, Levi, and Morgan. James died in 1877 at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 10 days. Asenith died February 16, 1899, aged 80 years, 7 months and 15 days. They are buried at Gifford Cemetery.

Joseph Henry Woody and Louisa Wright were married November 8, 1855 in Jasper County, Iowa. She waa the daughter of Newton and Cynthia (Fouta) Wright. Louisa's family was also from Indiana. She was born March 8, 1840 in LaPorte County, Indiana. She came to Jasper County with her parents in about 1848.

Joseph and Louisa were the parents of ten children: Willis, Lucy Ann, Walter, Mary E ., Marcella, J erome, Sarah J., Henry, HlllT)', and Cyntha. All their children were born in Jasper County.

1. Willis was born November 12, 1857. He didn't live to be two years old, passing away on September 10, 1859. He is buried at the Seay Cemetery at the north edge of Monroe, Iowa.

2. Lucy Ann Woody was 'born in 1862. She was married March 22, 1884 in Jasper County to William Alloway. Their children were: Leon· ard, Nellie (Alloway) Painter, Lulu (Alloway) En yard, Edna (Alloway) McKinney, Iva (Allow· ay) Hevlin, Ivan, Floyd, Leo, Lee, Vera and Alvin.

3. Walter Woody was born in 1864. He married Kathryne Heckler. They had seven children: Mary E. fY{oody) Mather, Alvin, Rob· ert Earl, Carl, Paul, Clara fY{oody) Hansen, and Ollie fY{oody) Ballinger.

4. Mary E. Woody was born in 1866. She married Charles Valentine. They had three sons: Ray, Mark and Louis.

5. Marcella Woody was born in 1867. She married Albert Wilson. They had seven chil· dren: Everett, Ethel CHilson) Mick, Olive (Wil· son) Jones, Harold, Harley, Clyde, and Esther.

6. Jerome Woody was born in 1870. He married May Freidenberg. Their children were: Harvey, Ralph, and Dorothy fY{oody) Burns.

7. Sarah J. Woody was born in 1872. She married Harvey Nolin. Their children were: Ida (Nolin) Wall ace, Grace (Nolin) Meeks Har· ter, Cora (Nolin) De Hoedt Haft and La Verne.

8. Henry J. Woody was born in 1875. He married Ella Broderson. Their children were: Blanche fY{oody) Burbridge, Avery, Zola fY{oody) Wino, Agnes fY{oody) Lust, Hoyt, and Hor ace.

9. HlllT)' Woody was born in 1877. He married Maude Danks. Their children were: Oakley, Hershell, Ardelle, Neil, Rex, and Mau­rice.

10. Cyntha Woody was the youngest child of Joseph and Louisa. She was born December 12, 1880.

Joseph Henry Woody died January 29, 1913. Louisa fY{right) Woody died J une 30, 1916. They are both buried at Seay Cemetery. They were my great aunt and uncle.

Maurice is a descendant of the Woody family that settled near Monroe, Iowa, in the 1850s. A record of their family will be found elsewhere.

Maurice was born in 1916 to HlllT)' and Maude (Danks) Woody. On October 3, 1942, Maurice married Aletha Walker. Her parents were Murry Jefferson and Leona May (Hitch· ler) Walker. They lived in the Metz area. Aletha was born in 1921. Maurice and Aletha now are the parents of four children: Lois Lucille, Leona Maude, Leonard Leroy, and LaVonne Elaine.

Lois Lucille Woody was born March 27, 1944 in Newton. She wae married June 28, 1964 in Newton to Glenn Claude Shunk. Their family will be found elsewhere. Leona Maude Woody was born September 7, 1951 in Newton. She was married to John Metz on April 28, 1979. John was born January 16, 1956. His parents are Jim and Gail (Poston) Metz of Newton. John and Leon a have one daughter, Bethany Jonelle Metz, who was born in February, 1982. They now live \n Stewartstown, Pennsylvania. Leonard Leroy·\Jioody was born August, 1953 in Newton. He was married June 29, 1975 at the lnnerfaith Center in Colfax, Iowa, to Rebec· ca Ann Diamond. She was born March 20, 1956. Her parents are Dean and Doria Dis· mond of Newton. William Hayden Woody, the son of James and Asenith (McGlemery) Woody, was born in 1844 in Indiana. He came to Iowa in 1849 with his parents. He was married September 13, 1868 in Jasper County, Iowa to Maria F. Wright, the daughter of Newton and Cynthia (Fouts) Wright, whose family ia found else­where. She was born J anuary ?:7, 1847 in Jasper County, Iowa. They were the parents of five children.: Nora, Nellie, Mertie, Cecil, and Lulu.

1. Nora A. Woody was born in 1870 in Marion County, Iowa. She was married February 19, 1888 in Jasper County, Iowa to George Black. She was married a second time on December 15, 1892 at Newton, Iowa to Wallace Lincoln Romans. He was born September 15, 1867 in Jasper County, Iowa to Asbury Denam and Mary Allato fY{ood) Romans. Wallace and Nora fY{oody) RomllilB were the parents of eight children: Veda, Leta, Lawrence C., W. Vern, Corrale, Merle, Bonnie, and Erma.

2. Nellie F. Woody waa married September 12, 1888inJasper County, Iowa to Elias Reese, the son of Enoch and Sarah (Livingston) Reese.

3. Mertie Woody married Cheater Mikesell. They had six children: Blanche, Nina, Anna, Helen, Robert, and Tom E.

4. Cecil Woody married William McMurray. They had five children: Everett, Billy, Clyde, Ralph, and Jack.

5. Lulu Woody married Frank Lawson.

John Morris ("Jack") and Chloreeaa Dew Wormley have beenresidenta of Newton since their marriage in August of 1941. Jack's grand· parents (the Wormleys and Benjamins) were pioneers in the Newton area, arriving here in covered wagons in the middle of the 19th century. Born near Newton, Jack attended Hammer Grade School northeast of Newton, Newton High School, and Iowa State College as an Agricultural student.

A member of a boys demonstration team that won the State 4-H Club Championship, Jack was active in his early yean as President of a 4-H Club, Jasper County Rural YoU!li Peoples and later, President of the Jasper County Farm Bureau, Flying Farmers, and

Because of his ability as a judge of livestock, his interest continued in agriculture and, while still a teenager, was 88ked to aasist in bringing both dairy and beef calves from other 8J"" • and out-of-state to Jasper County for 4-H ( 1rojecta. He also served 88 a livestock juL&6 " and assistant 4-H Club leader.

At the age of twenty, Jack was a tenant farmer and served 88 Secretary and Office Manager for the Federal Farm Program for two years. He then became Farm Mana,ger for the Maytag Fa,rms which were owner - oper­ated and consisted of over 3,000 acres, mostly in Jasper County.

While serving in the Iowa Senate for two sessions, he operated his own farms and con tin· ued this operation for many years.

As one of the early pioneers in Soil Conserve· tion work, Jack had a conservation plan for every farm he operated in the county, which included contour plantings and building ter­races. He h88 a lifetime membership in the Holstein-Friesian American Registry Associa­tion, and waa responsible for the winning of the Contour Iowa Com Yield State Contest in 1944, with a corn yield of 150.13 bushels per acre.

Chloressa Dew Wormley was born in Kirksville, Miaaouri, where she attended grade school and was a member of the National Honor Society in Kirksville High School. After graduating from the Northe88t Miasouri Uni­versity with two majors, she taught in a Mis­souri high school. The opportunity to rmish a year of teaching Physical Education in the highly-rated Newton School System became available. Teaching at W88hington and Woo­drow Wilson Grade Schools, with classes at l--+h the Junior and Senior High Schools as

, W88 a good introduction to the Newton _ ~.nmunity for Chloressa.

It W88 during that school year that she met her husband, and they were married in August of 1941. Two children, Karen Jean and Jon Clarke, were hom, attended Newton schools,

and later both became University graduates. Working in the First Presbyterian Church,

teaching Sunday Schdol classes, and serving on various committees in the church led to other opportunities for Chloressa, such as the Cancer Drive, Salvation Army Board, six years on the Y Board, Pr A, and five yeara serving in the Newton Women's Club, including being President. Serving aa Chapter President of 'ITI', a charitable women's organization, waa also rewarding.

In 1956, at the time of the National Plowing Matches near Newton, Chloressa acted as Official Hostess to President Dwight D, Eisen­hower and his wife, Mamie; U.S: Senator Bourke Hickenlooper, and other distii18uie.hed guests. Working on Newton's Centennial Com· mittee was also a pleasure, and she also served on the organizational committee for the J88per County Historical Society at the time it was reorganized. ,.

Debra Joann Pennock was born April 24, 1956, at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton, Iowa. She is the daughter of Wayne and Joanne Pennock who live at 211 W. 4th St. S., Newton, Iowa. · Her maternal grandparents, Charles and Marie LaFavre, moved to Colo­rado that year after he retired from the poetof· fice. She had both sets of great grandparents living in Newton: Warren and Stella Pennock and Gerlt and Johanns Samson, who are now deceased. She still has her great, great grand­mother, Delphine Rector Prickett, bom Febru­ary 12, 1894, living in Tucson, Arizona. When Debra was bom her parents lived on a rented 40-acre farm with a large house, six miles northwest of Newton. Since she was the first

and only child for several years, and had no cousins living in the area, and lived in a rural neighborhood with few children, she spent her days playing with farm pets. There were sheep and occasionally a bottle-fed lamb. They had baby chicks, chickens to feed, eggs to gather, ducks, rabbits and kittens. she wished she had a little sister to play with. Her father milked cows and needed a good herd dog so they got a border collie dog, Lad, at the dairy bam on the adjoining farm owned by her grandparents. J. Dall88 and Cynthia Pennock.
