June 6, 1944 British, American, Canadian and French

forces landed on Normandy in the North of France

It was part of a larger operation known as Operation Overlord

The Nazis are expecting an attack– They just don’t know

– Years prior the Germans had created a fortified defensive line along the Northern coast of Europe

Over 1 MILLION personnel were involved in the invasion

Despite the heavy losses the Allies hold the beach and punch through into France

Allied forces had successfully opened up the Western front that Stalin had wanted

Hitler now had a serious problem The Soviets were attacking and pushing in from the

East– The allies were to the west

Battle of the Bulge

Hitler decides to attack the west in a campaign that would be known as the Battle of the Bulge

Germany would score early victories but by March of 1945 the Americans crossed the Rhine river and began the final assault on Berlin

By April of 1945 Allied forces began a race to Berlin– The Soviets would get there first

– Adolf Hitler, deep in his bunker, marries his long-time mistress Eva Braun

– He makes one last radio address He blames the loss on his generals April 30, Eva and he kill themselves

dropped the bomb over Hiroshima, Japan– It detonated at 8:15 Am Japanese-time
