forces landed on Normandy in the North of France

It was part of a larger operation known as Operation Overlord

The Nazis are expecting an attack– They just don’t know

– Years prior the Germans had created a fortified defensive line along the Northern coast of Europe

Prior to the landing there was aerial bombardment and paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines

Allied forces had successfully opened up the Western front that Stalin had wanted

August 25, 1944 France is liberated

After D-Day

Combined forces now turn west towards Germany

Aftermath of D-day

The American +British forces were able to sweep through France

France was liberated August 25, 1944– A little more than two months after the invasion

By April of 1945 Allied forces began a race to Berlin– The Soviets would get there first

– Adolf Hitler, deep in his bunker, marries his long-time mistress Eva Braun

Eisenhower accepts the unconditional surrender of the Nazis

Victory in Japan would come at a much higher cost

The Island-hopping strategy of the Americans was working, but it was long and costly

Iwo Jima

Battles in the pacific were becoming increasingly brutal and bloody

Iwo Jima– Japanese losses 110,000 men– American losses 12,500 men

The decision was made to the newly developed Atomic Bomb

The Bomb

August 6, 1945 An American bomber, the Enola Gay,

dropped the bomb over Hiroshima, Japan– It detonated at 8:15 Am Japanese-time

are they important?– Dates: What significant event took place on that

date? What were the consequences of that event?

Chapter 16 Review Questions 1-18 (pg.466)– DO NOT DO 19 or 20!

Also Questions 1-4 (pg.467)

Both of these assignments will be due on Thursday before the test.
