    The Sunderbans, largest mangrove forest and thebiggest delta of the world (including 2/3 of it with theBangladesh), is located in the South 24 Parganas districtof West Bengal state of India. The Iceland is facing greatdanger due to climate change. Due to i ts pecul iargeographical location and the dictates of geography, themeans of transport and communication in this region arenot well developed, with all the attendantconsequences. Lack of i rr igation has meant mono-cropped agriculture. Breaches in earthen embankmentsand cyclonic storms mean loss of life and destruction ofcrops and property on a regular basis. Any developmentstrategy in this ecologically fragile environment must becarefully designed and implemented.

    The World Red Cross day has been organized at Kolkataby the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) of South 24Parganas district. A run for voluntary blood donation wasorganized, a contingent of 150 youths volunteerscarrying Red Cross flag run to make awareness. Thisvolunteers came from 8 different places. Thetemperature was about 32 centigrade during the daytime, incidentally the first blood bank in India was atKolkata and was managed by the Indian Red CrossSociety (IRCS). A voluntary blood donation wasorganized there.Voluntary blood donation, traditionally considered afulfilling task, seems to be losing its appeal. Statistics

    prepared by the Association of Voluntary Blood DonorsForum (AVBDF, a civil society of India) on thepercentage of voluntary blood donation to the totalblood collection in individual states during the last oneyear, shows a rapid decline in the number of donorsthroughout India.

    Only five states have achieved the record where thepercentage of voluntary blood donation to totalcollection stands above 80%.

    Tripura has ranked first in the list with an excellentfigure of 95.3%.West Bengal, which had traditionally been either in thefirst or second position, has been outranked by TamilNadu, which came second with a percentage figure of91.9%. West Bengal, with a figure of 85.1% stood third.Punjab ranked fourth with 84.9%, while Maharashtra wason the fifth position with 84.8%.Blood safety and voluntary donationsG L O B A L O V E R V I E W

    collected in the developing world where 82% of theworld's population live.

    Gangasagr Mela, an annual religious event, in India,about 6 lakh people take part from different parts ofIndia, IRCS, South 24 pargnas district take very activepart with the district administration to support the eventfor making it success. They provide ambulance (4 no),dead body carriers, wheel chairs, May I help you counterfor 50 centers for 24 hrs for 8 days, organized voluntaryblood donation, and managing 2.5 lakh temporaryshelters prepared for the pilgrims. An amount of 3 lakhINR spent for this purpose (40 % of their annualexpenditure). 450 volunteers deployed for this eventannually.

    This IRCS district branch is providing 24 hrs Ambulanceservice, 3 out patient medical centers in 3 differentplaces and going to operate May I help you centers at 3Governments hospitals in this districts for 24 hrs.A cultural programme was organized in the evening tomark the 150
