SAWMILLING SUCCESS: African Sawmill Increases Efficiency with TITAN
CASE STUDY: WM1000 Industrial Sawmill Installations
2 The Industrial Voice Spring/Summer 2017
Whether you are reading this as an existing customer or someone who is interested in learning more about Wood-Mizer’s growing presence in the industrial sawmilling arena, this edition of Wood-Mizer’s Industrial Voice, featuring the launch of the new TITAN range, is actually the result of many years of a dedicated and deliberate effort and strategy to “earn our spurs” in the industrial sawmilling industry.
Large Log SawmillingAlthough we have been producing our industrial level resaw since 1991 with units now operating all over the world, our first industrial narrowband log breakdown saw, the LT300 (now known as the WM4000), and the accompanying material handling systems, were launched
in 2001. Today, we have an extensive amount of industrial narrowband log breakdown units operating throughout the world cutting a wide range of log species into varied end products. These units are operating efficiently and effectively and continue to earn excellent returns for our customers.
Small Log SawmillingIn 2006 we focused on the cost-effective processing of small logs and developed the SLP (Smart Log Processing) family of products also based on our well-proven narrowband technology. We now have numerous SLP components working as individual units or as part of complete SLP lines that are successfully converting small logs into valuable end products throughout the world.
Wideband SawmillingIn 2010 we launched our first wideband, crowned steel wheel sawmill – the WM1000. This sawmill was designed to tackle the need from many of our customers to be able to saw up to 1.7m (67") diameter logs. The year 2013 saw us launch the WB2000 – our first wideband standard log-size sawmill that can operate with 3" spring set blades, or up to 4" Stellite® tipped, or swaged tipped blades. It can saw logs up to 1m (40") in diameter and up to 6 tons in weight.
The knowledge that we have gained over the last 26 years about the needs and expectations of this part of the sawmilling industry and pressure from existing industrial Wood-Mizer customers, recently prompted us to take the next step up into a fully-fledged wideband sawmilling family of products. The impetus came when the well-respected South African based manufacturer – Multisaw – entered into discussion with us to promote and manufacture their proven range of wideband sawmilling and material handling products throughout the world. These discussions led to Wood-Mizer purchasing the rights for this range of products and a long term commitment from Multisaw to partner with us on system design, installation, support and training.
The Wood-Mizer TITAN products are here – extending the range of our industrial sawmilling offering and providing a seamless progression for our existing industrial customers, or a new option for those already in the wideband sawmilling business. Call us for more information – we are ready to serve. Thank you for your interest in all that Wood-Mizer has to offer.
Sincerely yours,
FROM THE CEO

As the leading supplier of thin-kerf, narrowband portable and industrial sawmills, Wood-Mizer
has significantly broadened its reach into the industrial sawmilling market. With the introduction of Wood-Mizer TITAN, the company now offers a full line of wideband sawmill equipment that is designed to improve timber production rates and elevate a sawmill’s operational efficiency. This new product line is a result of a purchase agreement with Multisaw, a well-established manufacturer of wideband sawmill equipment since 1990.
THE WOOD-MIZER TITAN LINEThe Wood-Mizer TITAN line
includes wideband primary and secondary
breakdown sawmills and resaws as well as circular saw edgers, multirips, optimizing edgers, manual board edgers, and material handling equipment. The move will add further momentum to Wood-Mizer’s ability to offer innovative high capacity equipment and broaden the corporation’s global reach.
“Our well-known narrowband industrial range has helped wood producers worldwide cut costs and raise yields,” says Richard Vivers, President and CEO of Wood-Mizer. “But that is just one piece of a very big market. With Wood-Mizer TITAN, we will serve the high-throughput needs of industrial operations with our established network of locations and commitment to customer support
throughout the world.”TITAN wideband sawmill equipment
has proven its advantages in the most demanding markets in the world. Customers, Patula Product Sawmill in South Africa, utilize the TITAN system to produce high-throughput of structural timber. Patula’s operation consists of a TITAN twin vertical bandsaw, TITAN double arbor circular multirip, TITAN twin head resaw, and two TITAN manual board edging systems. “We wanted high production wideband sawmilling technology that we could rely on to cut the quality that we want and with enough additional capacity available to grow production into the future,” said Phillip Anderson of Patula Product Sawmill.

“This is exactly what we’ve now achieved,” added Troy Cooper of Patula Product Sawmill. “In the last month, we have increased throughput again by 27%.”
ABOUT WOOD-MIZERSince 1982, Wood-Mizer has earned
the reputation as the world’s largest manufacturer of portable band sawmills with tens of thousands of bandmills sold around the globe. Today, Wood-Mizer offers an extensive line of narrowband portable and industrial sawmills, wideband sawmilling equipment, resaws, edgers, kilns, log splitters, material handling equipment, bandsaw blades and blade maintenance equipment for woodworking hobbyists and forestry professionals all over the world. For more than 35 years, Wood-Mizer has provided top quality wood processing equipment and exceptional customer service for people who want the freedom of sawing their own lumber for projects or production.
THE WOOD-MIZER PRODUCT LINE
TITAN wideband machines will greatly expand Wood-Mizer’s range, which will now consist of two distinct product lines, each geared towards the specific volume and budget requirements of the end-user.
• Wood-Mizer’s portable and industrial sawmill line continues to provide narrowband sawmilling equipment for entry level to professional and industrial operations.
• Wood-Mizer’s TITAN products are strongly-built wideband sawmilling equipment for high-throughput industrial sawmilling applications.
Each TITAN product is designed to operate as standalone equipment for existing sawmilling lines or to form an entire sawmilling line that can be customized to the requirements of the end-user. The TITAN line provides for primary and secondary log breakdown across a range of log diameters varying from 4” to 24” (100-600 mm). In addition, Wood-Mizer will be offering wideband blades soon for use on TITAN machines with blade widths up to 6” (150 mm).

riginally operating with two sawmill processing lines, UCL Sawmill began a massive equipment upgrade in 2015 in order
to increase feed speeds and overall production levels while keeping their investment to a reasonable cost. In order to meet their objectives, they installed a sawmilling line manufactured at the time by Multisaw, bringing their total number of processing lines to three.
Multisaw’s sawmill equipment range was acquired by Wood-Mizer, and is now manufactured and distributed as Wood-Mizer TITAN. The new TITAN wideband sawmilling line consists of primary and secondary sawmilling equipment, board edgers, plus all the necessary material handling equipment to automate the movement of timber from start to finish, as well as the removal of waste products for chipping.
THE UCL TITAN SYSTEMAt the beginning of UCL’s TITAN
system is an elevated operator station that allows the main operator to have a clear view of the whole process, along with all equipment controls at his fingertips. Debarked logs from the log infeed deck are individually loaded onto the infeed loader. The log loader unit rotates each log to the optimal orientation for cutting, and then it is fed
into a wideband TITAN twin vertical saw, which handles logs from 4" to 17" (120mm to 450mm).
The twin 6-inch blades of the T6-TBLT twin vertical saw can handle cutting speeds of up to 196' (60 meters) per minute, producing a two-sided cant and two side slabs. The cutting width of the TITAN sawheads are adjusted by a servo motor and can change the cutting width from log to log, if necessary, to help maximize sawn recovery from the round log. Powered hold-down rollers keep the log securely resting on the spiky chain during sawing. As the cants exit the twin vertical saw, side rollers keep the

slabs held tightly against the cant until they are ready to drop down onto a cross transfer slab removal conveyor.
The cant continues to move down the line to a TITAN double arbor multirip, which handles cants up to 160 mm (6") thick. Before entering the multirip, the cant is flipped onto a flat side by an automatic kicker while optical sensors engage powered hold-down rollers that keep the cant moving securely through the multirip at speeds up to 40 meters (131') per minute. The TITAN multirip is capable of producing several boards from one cant, while maintaining highly accurate cuts and a smooth surface finish.
Finished boards exit the multirip and are stacked for drying. Precise board thicknesses and the high cut quality of the multirip improves overall timber recovery and reduces the need for further processing further down the production line. The unfinished slabs are sent to a TITAN resaw for additional processing.
UCL’s TITAN twin head resaw also uses 6-inch wideband blades, powered by two 45 kW (60 HP) motors, which produce up to two waney edge boards from every slab at speeds up to 80 meters (262') per minute. The TITAN resaw is capable of making almost instant height adjustments between each cut, enabling better recovery of the slabs being fed into the resaw. In as little
8 The Industrial Voice Spring/Summer 2017
as 0.3 seconds, the resaw’s servo height adjustment motor can reposition the sawing head to the appropriate height for an incoming slab.
The waney edge boards are sent to an unscrambler, which separates the boards and prepares them for the TITAN automated optimizing edger. By utilizing advanced optical scanning technology, the optimizing edger provides more value recovery from every board. Each board is scanned and the computer determines where it should be edged to get the best possible recovery. The board is then automatically aligned and edged at a speed of up to 460' (140 meters) per minute.
UCL’s decision to replace their existing manual edger setup with a TITAN optimizing edger is a testament to the success of the recently installed line. The addition of the TITAN edger will complete their equipment upgrade project and will enable the saw lines to further increase production. UCL Sawmill is already experiencing the benefits of their new TITAN line by reporting more efficiency, higher production, and lower production costs for their operation.

Equipped with up to 4" (100mm) wide bandsaw blades, the WB2000 sawmill features heavy-duty construction, low maintenance requirements, and an efficient operation. Electronic setworks and an elevated operator control station allow a single operator to manage all sawing and hydraulic log handling functions while maintaining a clear view of production. The advanced setworks are displayed on a 12" (304mm) HMI touch-screen which presents board and cant sizes along with current head height, feed position, and blade power. In addition, the new deluxe joysticks provide the operator with precise control of all sawing and log handling functions, and feature proportional hydraulic speed control.
All hydraulic log handling functions - such as the log clamps, chain turners, and power rollers - are modular, and can be moved to different bunks as needed. The WB2000 is equally used as a standalone sawmill to process all required materials, or as an
addition to an existing business to process irregular logs or to produce custom orders that the existing equipment is not suited for.
“The WB2000 is affordable for small to large companies, and provides flexibility other machines cannot,” shares Ryszard Weber, owner of a timber processing company in Poland. “With this mill, I can cut anything – small logs, large logs, high quality logs, low quality logs. Adding the WB2000 to the business, I can now make profits from all my logs, instead of only logs that fit on my processing line. It is perfect for producing custom orders, and I can now handle smaller orders that were impractical before.”
The Wood-Mizer TITAN WB2000 sawmill is now available worldwide. Contact your local Wood-Mizer Representative to order.

LA UNION QUALITY TIMBER MANUFACTURING CORP. (LATIMCO) upgraded to Wood-Mizer’s new WB2000 wideband sawmill to process Southeast Asian hardwoods into timber for export and for their own door manufacturing plant in the Philippines.
We are located in San Fernando, La Union, Philippines. Our area is known for tourism and offering a friendly environment to businesses. In our factory, we produce timber needed for manufacturing of all our wooden products.
The Philippines is a very nice country and tourism is very strong here. You can find a lot of things in the Philippines – friendly people and our culture is very rich. We have 7,100 islands and each island is very unique. Every place you go, you feel the warm welcome of every Pilipino.
ABOUT LATIMCOMy father had a lumber business since
I was young. After my father turned over the business to us, we started importing
logs and manufacturing and milling our own timber.
We manage everything, from importing of logs to manufacturing of finished products. It’s a complete process. We manufacture doors, jams, mouldings, facia boards and other wood architectural products for private clients and government projects and for export as well.
We are also exploring the Japanese market. We know Japanese quality standards are very high - timber should be accurate and very precise. So, we look for sawmill machines which can deliver quality output. Since we bought the Wood-Mizer sawmill, our Japanese and local clients are happy with the quality of the products we produce using the WB2000 machine.
THE SAWING PROCESSFirst, our logs are imported from
Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Brazil. Some are from New Zealand, Australia, and Uruguay. Previously, we only cut Meranti (Philippine

mahogany), but now we include Malaysian hardwoods as well. We can process all clients’ specifications.
Imported logs are shipped to the Port in La Union. We personally do the unloading from the vessel and cut these logs to length based on our clients’ specifications. Then, we send these cut logs to the TITAN WB2000 sawmill for milling. Next is edging using the EG300 twin-blade edger and the slabs are cut on a Wood-Mizer horizontal resaw.
We use our big vertical saw to accommodate logs that the WB2000 cannot process - logs with more than one meter diameters – up to 1.6m (5’). So, the vertical saw processes irregular logs for our manufacturing requirements.
We use the WB2000 to process timber sizes smaller than one meter. We prefer to cut on this machine, as it can now give us a high recovery percentage.
After the milling process, the timber is packed and sent to another LATIMCO plant for kiln drying. After drying for 25 days, we manufacture the timber into doors, jams, mouldings and other wood
architectural products as per client’s orders for all types of projects such as residential, low and high rise building. We also supply kiln-dried timber for Japan-based customers.
THE IMPORTANCE OF UPGRADING TO SAWMILL TECHNOLOGY WITH BETTER TIMBER RECOVERY
In the Philippines and other markets, higher percentage of recovery is one of the major goals. Speed is now becoming a secondary priority. Before, speed was the primary objective and recovery rate of 50% was acceptable. Now it’s the other way around. So if any sawmillers want to achieve maximum recovery – less sawdust, less waste – then they should think about investing in Wood-Mizer machines.
Our company and products are unique in the sense that we have now upgraded to the latest technology. New machines have new capabilities, new strengths, and new features that you can’t get from old machines. This new Wood-Mizer machine is a perfect example of a machine where you can use the saw to achieve better cutting for each board. I knew that this machine could give us modern sawing
technology and safety, but most important, it gives a higher return during the cutting process – a better recovery percentage. If we continue to cut logs for 8 hour shifts daily, our ROI for the WB2000 machine will be easily achieved. This is not just a theory, we actually did the figures after we had been cutting for a few months. We could see the difference between the vertical saw and the Wood-Mizer horizontal bandsaw.
14 The Industrial Voice Spring/Summer 2017
15 woodmizer.com
On the other hand, savings on energy consumption is almost half. The WB2000 now runs on a 50 HP motor as compared to the vertical saw which has a motor of around 120 HP. That’s a big difference. You can save a lot of electricity.
USEFUL FEATURES OF THE WB2000 SAWMILL
With the Wood-Mizer wideband WB2000 sawmill, we have all the features we need – heavy duty construction, upgraded technology, higher recovery. The controls, setworks and everything is perfect. Our operator knows where the exact cutting without any loss or increase in timber size. The hydraulics of the WB2000 are very tough. They are designed for tough timber like tropical hardwoods. This has been tried and tested already.
IMPORTANCE OF SOURCING SUSTAINABLY HARVESTED LOGS At the present, we source our timber from a legitimate supplier, so we are making sure that they have the necessary permits to cut their trees, and they use a program of reforestation. If they fail this program, we don’t do business with them.
ADVICE FOR OTHER SAWMILLERSFor wood producers, I recommend that
they should upgrade their facilities, otherwise, they will be left behind. It’s just like using an old rotary telephone in the digital age where people are now using Androids and IOS – they provide higher performance.

With 2016 being a record year for WM1000 installations, sawmillers
around the world report on how they are using the massive sawmill
to cut their biggest logs, increase yield and improve cutting accuracy.
Power Options 50 HP (37 kW) electric 460v/60Hz 3 Ph
Main Features Ride along operator station Electronic setworks Power feed Log length – Limited only by rail length Log diameter – 67" (1.7 m)Some configurations have different maximum diameter specification.
WM1000 SPECIFICATIONS ive years ago, Wood-Mizer released a revolutionary sawmill designed to facilitate the sawing of large diameter logs up to 67" (1.7m) in diameter. The affordable price, durable construction, and simple maintenance and operation made the sawmill an attractive choice for
companies dealing with large diameter logs from all over the world.
Using the WM1000, large logs can be slabbed through and through, sawn in half, quartered, or broken down into cants for resawing. The operator controls all cutting functions while standing on a platform that moves with the head. The WM1000 also features thinner kerf blades than other large-log sawing methods, resulting in higher timber yields, more cutting precision and a smoother surface finish.
WM1000 INDUSTRIAL SAWMILLINSTALLATIONS AROUND THE WORLD
19 woodmizer.com
Cook Woods (Oregon, USA) Cook Woods offers 250 different timber species that are sourced from all over the world. At the center of the business is a Wood-Mizer WM1000 industrial sawmill with a fully hydraulic bed, which can handle logs up to 40' (12m) long and 67" (1.7m) in diameter. Some of the woods they cut are extremely rare, so every fraction of an inch can mean the difference between making money and losing money on a certain product. “I can cut a slab for a conference table — that used to take over an hour to mill with a chainsaw — in a little over a minute,” shares owner Chris Cook. “Chainsaw mills are rough-cut at best and generally wipe out ¾" (19mm) or more with kerf and chatter during a cut. Our Wood-Mizer WM1000 is laser leveled over the entire track.”
Kamuela Hardwoods (Hawaii, USA) Most building materials on the Hawaiian Islands are imported from overseas. But Kamuela Hardwoods processes only locally-sourced timber, supplying islander woodworkers, builders, and even instrument makers. Kamuela Hardwoods has the unique ability to provide “rainforest hardwood” species that were planted locally rather than from rain forests half a world away. “We used an Alaskan chainsaw mill, but it produced massive waste,” said owners Josh Greenspan and Alex Woodbury. “It was also dangerous and required inefficient use of our labor.” Alex and Josh installed a Wood-Mizer LT70 and a WM1000 sawmill along with a Wood-Mizer EG200 twin-blade edger in order to expand. “We’re dealing with tropical urban canopy trees with massive base logs and limbs,” said Josh. “Having the pair of big sawmills allows us to break down base logs with the WM1000 and mill up the rest on the LT70 - there is very little wasted material.” Kamuela Hardwoods regularly mills more than 40 different species of trees ranging from softwoods to some of the hardest and most dense tropical woods in the world.
Here are just a few of the many companies throughout the world that are using the WM1000 to process large logs:
20 The Industrial Voice Spring/Summer 2017
Copford Farm (Sussex, England) The father and son team of Alex and Harry Gingell diversified their farm activities to include sawmilling many years ago. They started by offering mobile sawmill services, and now that they are well-established, they specialize in custom cutting oak to the requirements of local builders. Smaller diameter straight logs were easily cut on their Wood-Mizer LT40 sawmill, but large diameter logs had to be cut in half with a chainsaw. There was a clear need for a larger capacity sawmill, and they soon decided to install a WM1000. “It’s a huge sawmill but easy to operate,” said Harry. “In addition to being faster we are getting much higher yield from bigger logs. Accuracy is spot on and the surface finish is excellent. We have had very good feedback from customers”. The fact that it is a horizontal bandsaw was a definite benefit, since it could be installed easily and cheaply on a flat surface rather than requiring a pit like a vertical bandsaw, and could therefore be moved without problem if they decided to rearrange the mill layout in the future.
Vancouver Urban Timberworks (British Columbia, Canada) Danny Hagge and Eric Savics of Vancouver Urban Timberworks utilize their Wood-Mizer WM1000 sawmill to produce live-edge slabs and custom wood furniture from locally salvaged timber. With the WM1000, large diameter urban sourced logs can be sawed into half, quarters, or cut into manageable cants for resawing. The WM1000 was a good fit for the move forward Vancouver Urban Timberworks wanted to achieve as a business. “Before the WM1000, a lot of companies were refurbishing really old saws and old carriage mills, with some interesting equipment fabrications,” says Danny. “So when the WM1000 came out, everyone in the slab industry was really excited—it is an affordable, quality, great production mill for a medium volume business.”

Sri Murali Krishna & Company (Tamil Nadu, India) A third generation business headed by Khimji Patel and his son Pankaj, Sri Muralia Krishna & Company operates with a Wood-Mizer WM1000 sawmill in Chennai, India.“We decided to get the WM1000 after we saw what the [Wood-Mizer] LT70 was capable of,” Pankaj Patel says. “The LT70’s perfor-mance, which has now been redeployed to process teak and semi-hardwood logs of up to 500 mm diameter, convinced us that the WM1000 can only improve our long-term competitiveness,” Pankaj says. “The affordability of the WM1000 when compared to sawmills in the same league has also given us an advantage,” Khimji Patel shares. “We’re getting high performance capacity from the WM1000. It was also easy to install while its operation is simple, mini-mal operator training is required, high pro-ductivity is achieved and waste is reduced to a minimum”.
Hunski Hardwoods(California, USA) James and Nick Hunsaker of Hunski Hardwoods started their urban timber salvaging business with a chainsaw mill that would take up to eight hours to cut a single log. With an increasing inventory of large timber to be processed, the father and son team upgraded to a Wood-Mizer WM1000 sawmill and realized the potential growth they could experience with their business. “Once we saw the WM1000 in action and how it made easy work of any sized log, we knew we needed one,” said Nick. “Before the WM1000 we could mill one to maybe two logs per day, now we are averaging three to five per day with ease. Not only can we cut more logs per day, but we are gaining one to two more slabs per log as well. We couldn’t run our business without it.” Nick recalls that in the first two weeks of owning their WM1000, they were able to mill 30 logs that yielded approximately 200 slabs.
The WM1000 is a solution for companies looking to affordably extract the maximum value out of big logs. Contact your local Wood-Mizer representative for a detailed quote.
