Philosophy of the World Language Department

The World Language Department strives to prepare students to evaluate the interdependence of world societies. Through fostering skills of communication and cultural awareness, the student will be able to participate in a modern, global society, use world languages mostly for pleasure, and fight the ill effects of stereotyping. The student will be able to compare his/her own culture and linguistic background with those of other world societies, synthesize and evaluate elements from both experiences and enrich his/her life both practically and aesthetically.

Major Goals

The student will be able to improve communicative skills in a world language in addition to his/her first language.

The student will explore the benefits of second, and in some cases, third language acquisition for practical purposes such as cultural enhancement.

The student will enrich his/her life through an evaluation of the aesthetic values of a world culture in addition to his/her own.

World Language Culture & Conversation

World Language Culture & Conversation is a fairly new and quit exciting way for our youngest of students to be exposed to unfamiliar languages, cultures, histories and peoples of the world. Within the course of 6 years (1st- 6th grades) the student will have simple conversations amongst their classmates and with their teachers. They will experience what is would be like to be a Roman under the rule of Nero or a Spaniard during the inquisition. The artwork of Salvador Dali and genius of Leonardo Da Vinci will not only be studied but it will be examined to create dialogue and understanding of culture through its artists. Our historical studies will lead into the study of the many contributions of modem day Italians and Hispanics alike in order to bridge the gap between cultures and create understanding between people of different ethnic backgrounds.

Specifics of World Language at the Elementary Level

The following is a brief description of the unorthodox job description elementary World Language "specialists" encounter.

Specialists travel between groups of schools to which they are assigned. These groups are called "clusters". To each cluster travels a team of two World Language Specialists: one Italian Specialist and one Spanish Specialist. World Language at the is made up of two clusters:

1. Schools #4, #5, #9, & #l0 2. Schools #3, #7, & #8

World Language Specialists spend 40 minutes per week with each class usually spending one or one and one half days in each school teaching lst 6th grades. It should be noted that the NJ Core Curriculum Standards are based on teaching each class a minimum of 3 times per week. Hence, the reason our unique curriculum is illustrated on a bi-monthly basis.

Other important regulations to maintain are the prerequisites of the classroom makeup. The first is the regulation that if a student is fluent in one of the offered languages, then that student is placed in the other language class. This provides an opportunity for the child to be exposed to yet another culture while giving that same child scholastic challenges that would normally not be found if placed in the classroom in which no new learning will be acquired. It also avoids boredom and possible behavior problems that stem from boredom. Secondly, each language class should not exceed 25-30 students. When this is non attainable in larger classes, there must an accord between the specialists to balance the size of the classes as best as possible.
