LEADING THE WAY IN CORNWALL FOR STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Mounts Bay Academy is pioneering a new programme of staff training and development that is the first in Cornwall. We are working with Redruth School, Pensans School and Nancealverne School on a programme called the "Improving Teacher Programme" and the "Outstanding Teacher Programme". These courses are run by colleagues in house after they received training as part of the 'Outstanding Facilitators Programme".

Over half the staff this year have taken part in the workshops that give time to share best practice and reflect on their own work. Staff this week were caught showing off their practical skills creating "models of teaching and learning".

COMPUTER SCIENCE TO COUNT IN NEW EBACC

Once again we are ahead of the game at Mounts Bay with GCSE students working hard on this qualification already. The group are working on computer programming gadgets to aid their learning including RaspberryPi and Lego Mindstorms. We already have many of our former students working in the computer industry but we are keen to provide opportunities to be at the forefront of the next generation of IT gurus.

Best wishes

Remembering the Holocaust

This week in assembly we have been remembering the terrible atrocities that were inflicted on the Jewish people living in Germany and Europe during the Second World War.

Mr Blackabey led the assembly, assisted by students, and showed the film of our recent visit to Dachau concentration camp. The whole experience has allowed us to explore the human rights issues we face today whilst looking at the abuses of the past.

We have had many expressions of this over the course of the week and the poem below is a fantastic example of this.

Inspirational Design

Eight students at Mounts Bay are taking part in an innovative and exciting design project run by designer and senior lecturer, Susan Shaw, from Falmouth University.

They have been working with shapes, symbols and ratios and their aim is to develop the ‘Free’ charity brand. Some of the designs are now finished and as the photographs below show, our students have created some inspiring work.

“We had to make our own design to go on a bag and research what freedom means to us. I came up with a bird because birds are free.” Sophie Coyne

“It’s been interesting to find out how ideas are developed from things in nature into stylised design.” Roxane Cody

Primary Outreach

The Academy corridors have been full of the excited chattering of very young voices today. Students from a number of our local Primary Schools have been joining us for lessons in a wide variety of subjects from Photography to Science and from Dance to German.

This programme runs throughout the year so look out for more activities in future newsletters.

Amongst the visitors this week, we welcomed a group of students from Nancealverne School for their second visit to Ms Madge’s classroom where they will be honing their culinary skills.

Bon Appetit.

Nancealverne students and Ms Madge

On the Menu

Year 8 Food Technology students have been making multi-cultural products as part of their assessment for this semester. They were asked to imagine that they had to design and prepare a food product to be sold to the public at The Piazza in Truro. They approached the task very positively and the results were stunning. A variety of different products were made from several different countries including prawn stir-fry from China, pizza and tiramisu from Italy and sushi from Japan, to name just a few.

“They did brilliantly. There was a whole range of different foods from a variety of different countries. I was amazed by their enthusiasm and creativity.” - Ms Madge

Deep Learning Zone

“The Deep Learning Zone” is moving ever forward. Accelerated Reader and Star Reader tests have started with Year 8s and the Year 7s will be next. This is an exciting reading initiative to improve reading levels which in the long run will improve levels in English but will feed into other subjects. We have spoken to other schools who have noticed marked improvements. Time is being given in the new extended tutor times and at the beginning of English lessons. Teachers will be involved as well, reading their own books. New, exciting books are soon to be arriving in the DLZ to support ACR.

The Kernow Youth Book Awards which have proved to be a great success over the past few years, will be starting next week. It involves the reader reading a group of books and writing reviews and finally making a presentation with other schools in April.

We are investing in new books and would like students to please suggest books that they would like in the DLZ. This can be done by emailing Mrs Forster at [email protected], or just by popping into the DLZ to give in your requests.

Your old jewellery can help people with dementia

Ms Madge is collecting old jewellery to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society. If you have jewellery that is either broken or no longer wanted, the Alzheimer's Society can put it to worthy use by recycling it to raise funds for their Old Jewellery Appeal.

The Old Jewellery Appeal welcomes jewellery of any kind - whether it's an odd cufflink or earring, or a bracelet or necklace that you no longer wear. Every single item is gratefully received and the money raised will be used to fund projects to continue the Alzheimer's Society's work in leading the fight against dementia.

If staff and students bring in their old, broken jewellery (no sets of Granny's pearls or Mum's diamonds) Ms Madge will send it off for us.

Anyone for Paris?

Are you interested in going to Paris in early June for a weekend at a cost of £199? If you missed the meeting on Thursday lunchtime it’s not too late, you can still express your interest by emailing Mrs Shine with your name, year group and form.

At this stage Mrs Shine is just trying to get an idea of how many students would like to go. More information and details will follow at a later date.

JLT ReportReport by: Dan Harman

Taiko drumming in ExeterReport by Alana Furneaux 9 Troup

On Saturday 26th January Mounts Bay Taiko group (a.k.a the Heiwa Tribe) travelled to the Kagemusha Taiko HQ in Exeter.

At 8am we started driving to Exeter and arrived at the Kagemusha Taiko Centre at 10.15am.

When we had been introduced to our Taiko teacher (or ‘Sensei’) he showed us around the grounds.

As soon as we got back to the Taiko Centre we got straight into drumming. To be a successful Taiko drummer you need to master these skills:

AttitudePersonal responsibilityFocus on achievementTeamworkKataMovementBody languageFitnessTechniqueStick and rhythm skillsListeningPlaying with expressionKiEnthusiasmEnergyEnjoyment!

After doing warm ups like ‘My Drum’ and ‘Big Beat’ we practised one of our songs called ‘Shimiya Bayashi’ or as we call it ‘Shimi’. We found out that our Sensei made up this song which we didn’t know. He helped us improve our technique and general performance. However, we had to think about our attitude, Kata, Technique and Ki and remind others to maintain it.

Today was a really good experience and we all learnt a lot from the Sensei about how you present yourself and how you play. We will use the techniques and warm ups in our Taiko practice at school.

Rugby Alumni

Congratulations to former Mounts Bay student Luke Cowan Dickie who will be playing rugby for the England Under 20’s tonight against Scotland as England begin their defence of their Six Nations title at Plymouth Albion RFC, kick-off at 5.45pm.

Jack Nowell from the same year group would have been in the squad but Exeter Chiefs have selected him for their LV Cup game against Harlequins. Both Jack and Luke are making successful careers in the world of sport and they were in the Exeter Chiefs starting XV last weekend.

Mr Harvey will be in the crowd at Plymouth this evening cheering on the team and will be sending in a match report for next week’s newsletter. However if you have Sky Sports 2 the game is being shown live.

Rosie is a Knock-out

Year 9 student Rosie Davis has won the accolade of being one of the top ten female fighters of her age in the country.

Last weekend Rosie travelled to Kent to take on Super League Champion Charlie Butler. The fight had five one and a half minute rounds and Rosie won them all, walking away with the Southern Area Belt Title.

Rosie has been boxing for a year and a half and trains 5 days a week at the Touchgloves Gym in Penzance. She originally took up boxing for fitness and fun, but soon discovered that she was a contender. This is Rosie’s third fight and she has an unbeaten record.

“I won every round ... I out scored her on points and aggression coming home with a Southern Area Title Belt.” Rosie Davis

Under 13 HockeyReport By: Imogen Gray-Williams

The Mounts Bay Under 13 girls hockey team competed in a county tournament against other schools on the 29th January. The tournament was held at Penair School in Truro. We played against Penair, Penryn, Bodmin, Redruth, Liskarde, Newquay Tretherras and Richard Lander. The whole team played extremely well and showed excellent determination in the face of accomplished opponents.

The team played 7 a-side but took a squad of ten which included: Alice Pritchard, Imogen Gray-Williams, Lowenna Torrie, Abi Richards, Rachel Enston, Darcy Blewett, Laura Pearce, Ananda Lee, Sancha Chappell and Victoria Baczynska. In all of the games we played with the rain and strong winds coming down at us but we still played on with consistency. In one of the games a hockey stick was broken in two by one of the opposition team, which was found to be very amusing. Miss Cyster said, "You all worked very hard, had moments of brilliance and were an absolute pleasure to take to the competition". All the team said they had a great time but next time they would prefer that it was not raining, although after the games it was quite refreshing. The team did a great job and are looking forward to training more for the next time they have a competition.

Year 8 Cup FootballMatch report by Jacob Trudgeon

On Monday the 28th January Mounts Bay hosted Helston School in the Cornwall Schools Football Cup.

It was an extremely cold, wet and windy evening. Mounts Bay started very strong and bagged a three goal lead before the break. After the break Mounts Bay started very well and bagged another two goals, with some nice quick passing and great counter attacking play against the wind.

When the final whistle was blown Mounts Bay finished the game with the score of 7-0 and kept a clean sheet. The goal scorers where Dan Evans 1, Jacob Trudgeon 4, Shea Cornish 1 and an own goal.

Well done to all the team which consisted of: Jacob Trudgeon, Piran Tanner, Dan Evans, Louis Main, Matt Olds, Jacob Powley, Tom Quick, Conner George, Max Armstrong, Tom Eddy, Sam George and Josh Storey.

Bring on the next round!

NO GLORY BUT PLENTY OF PRIDE!

The Year 11 football team started the week with the prospect of two big games in their quest to bring the County Championship to Mounts Bay for the second time in three years. On Tuesday they faced Penair school in the semi-final with the winners due to play in the final on Thursday.

SEMI FINALIn gale force wind with driving rain the Mounts Bay team faced a strong Penair side and went in at half-time 0-1 down having conceded a wind-assisted goal from a free kick. In the second half Mounts Bay piled on the pressure in their search for an equaliser and with 10 minutes left Jason Simmonds drove the ball home to take the game into extra time. Charlie Mills made a match-saving tackle to keep the scores level and with just three minutes of extra time left and penalties looming team, captain Corey Jewell hit a speculative shot from 40 yards which caught the wind and sailed over the keeper's head to win the game. RESULT - MOUNTS BAY 2 PENAIR 1

FINALTwo days later the boys took on a very strong Budehaven side in the County Final. An even first half looked like ending goaless until a minute before half-time when Budehaven latched on a goalmouth scramble to go in with a 1-0 lead. Two quick second half goals put Bude 3-0 up and, despite tenacious tackling and determined running, Mounts Bay conceded another goal. Tyler Lea pulled one back after a run and cross from Todd Mitchell and Tom Ridge came close as Mounts Bay piled on pressure but it was not to be and in the last minute Budehaven broke away to score a fifth. RESULT - BUDEHAVEN 5 MOUNTS BAY 1

So a fantastic cup run ended with defeat in the final. The boys represented Mounts Bay with pride and passion, a credit on and off the pitch. Well done to all of them, 2nd best team in Cornwall!

Squad:Anoki Summers, Matt Dale, Billy Pengelley, Corey Jewell, Charlie Mills, Robbie Oxley, Tyler Lea, Fynn Scott, Tristan Badcock, Tom Ridge, Jake Carley, Jason Simmonds, Todd Mitchell, Jack Robinson. Team Manager Mr A Harvey.

Poppy Burford, Steph Sampson and Shea Cornish have been hard at work all week raising funds for the Academy's Show Jumping Team. We are in desperate need of new kit so got our heads together to formulate a plan. Poppy and Steph have been in charge of the 'guess the number of sweets in a jar' competition while Shea decided to arrive at the Academy in his 'gorilla' suit on Friday, which he has been receiving sponsorship for all week. A cake sale was also organised for this Friday and was very well received by the students.

A big thank must go to these students who have given up break and lunchtimes to fund raise. I must also thank Shea's mum and auntie for producing a massive range of delicious cakes and thanks to both staff and students who have been supporting us all week. The total raised from the 'sweet jar' and cake sale is £56.79!

The winner of the 'sweet jar' competition was Thomas Eddy guessing the exact number of 299 jelly beans in the jar. Well done.

This money will go towards entry fees and kit, alongside the very kind sponsorship of Solo Building Supplies and Harris-Begley Financial Advisors. We aim to get new numnahs and jackets for the team to compete in.
