Mediterranean Games 2013

On 20 June 2013, the Olympic Stadium of Mersin, Turkey hosted the Opening Ceremony of the 17th Mediterranean Games that ran until 30 June. The Games were officially inaugurated by the Turkish Prime Minister and by the International Olympic Committee's President, Dr Jacques ROGGE, with 25,000 spectators. The archery competitions started on Saturday, 22 June with the individual qualification and elimination rounds. The team events was featured on Sunday, 23 June, whereas the individual medals were awarded on Monday, 24. As for the Olympic Games, the recurve bow integrates the Mediterranean Games programme. The University of Mersin received the 65 archers (41 men and 24 women) coming from 15 countries. Egypt in the men’s category and Italy in the women’s won the first gold medals at the Mersin Mediterranean Games. In the men’s category, Egypt, led by Youth Olympic Champion Ibrahim SABRY, got down to business right away. They edged out the Italian favourites in the semi-finals, before upsetting Spain in the final by one point 211-210. In the women, the Italians (photo, FITARCO) showed why they were favoured to win after beating Spain in the final, double silver medalled nation of the day. In the women’s event, Guendalina SARTORI, team world champion, gave Italy its second gold medal of these Games after beating young Spaniard, Mirene ETXEBERRIA in the final. Imperishable, Natalia VALLEVA (ITA) attained a bronze medal with her victory earlier over Begül LOKLUOGLU (TUR). The men’s final was taken to a shoot-off where Spaniard Antonio FERNANDEZ beat Italian team Olympic champion Michele FRANGILLI. In the bronze medal match, another Italian, Alberto ZAGAMI, overcame Yagiz YILMAZ (TUR), annihilating Turkey’s medal hopes. With this success Italy wins the archery medal table over Spain, with two gold medals, one silver and three bronze. Guendalina SARTORI leaves Turkey as the most successful athlete with two gold medals. All information and results at www.worldarchery.org

Rules

50m Rounds and World Records

Under the current World Archery rules there is no such thing as a Double or even Quadruple 50m Round for the Compound Bow. We are aware that several organisers have organised these types of events which is their choice, but the issue starts when world records are claimed for such events. If an athlete wants to claim a world record for such event we will only recognise it when shot under the existing rules, meaning that the score for the first 72 arrows are valid since shot under the rules but the score shot under the second series of 72 arrows only when the tournament is registered twice and all rules in terms of practice have been followed. Furthermore, the results have to clearly show a separate total of the two 72-arrow events even if the final tournament results can be made on the cumulative score. Of course at no stage a score shot on a mixture of the second half of the first 72 arrows and the first half of the second 72 arrows can be considered as a record. World Archery will examine after Congress with the respective committees if there is a need to introduce a double 50m Round, if there is interest by our Member Associations. Bylaws

Two new bylaws effective as of 1 July 2013 can be found at the end of this newsletter.

Committees

Information from Coaches, Athletes and Judges Committees

We have seen more and more draws of athletes that are causing safety issues and issues with disturbing other athletes on the shooting line. The WA Coaches and Judges Committees, to the Athletes Committee's request, is studying this matter and soon will come with more detailed information. However, in the meantime World Archery wants to remind all Member Associations that the draw of the bow should be in the direction of the target face the athlete is shooting on, as well as have no high draws. The judges have the right to ask an athlete that has a technique that can cause a potential security issue to stop using such techniques and even ask them to stop competing if they continue. This matter will be addressed in the respective team managers meeting at World Archery Events.

Performances

World Records

The German star Kristina BERGER got on Sunday, 23 June 2013 a new compound bow world record with a score of 1418 points. BERGER reached this new world record at an international FITA round tournament in Ebersberg (GER). She obtained 352 points on 70m, 356 points on 60m, 352 points on 50m and 358 points on 30m. The current world N°3 had previously reached a world record on 70m in 2011 with a mark of 353 points.

Before becoming initiated to compound bow in 2009, for which she says being fascinated, BERGER was already triple individual champion of Germany in pistol shooting from 2002 and 2004 and with the German team in 2004. European Champion title-holder and bronze medallist at the Antalya World Cup on 15 June, BERGER is one of the major favourites for this enthralling season where she will try to get the gold medal at the Cali World Games, at the World Cup and at the Belek Antalya World Championships.

Find Kristina BERGER’s biography in our webpage, as well as the 2012 European Championships final on Archery TV. The 18-year-old Danish archer Stephan HANSEN shot 712 points in a competition in Kvernaland, Norway on Sunday, 23 June 2013. This result is a new world record for the compound junior category, only two points from the senior record. Stephan's score is also a European senior record! The young Dane has just started to compete against senior and is having great success already. In March this year, he won the bronze medal at the European indoor championships, and at the World Cup in Antalya this month, he won gold with the Danish team.
